AC/DC singer Brian Johnson joined Billy Joel on stage last night (Friday, March 21) at Madison Square Garden in New York City to perform the AC/DC classic “You Shook Me All Night Long”. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below

AC/DC will enter a studio in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada this May to begin recording its 16th studio album. The project will be the first set of new AC/DC material since 2008’s “Black Ice” album. In addition, the band intends to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year by playing 40 shows in selected cities around the world which are yet to be announced.

The plans were revealed by Johnson in a surprise phone call he made on February 14 to a radio station in West Palm Beach, Florida. Johnson is a resident of the state.

Asked about the group’s plans, Johnson said, “We’ve been denying anything, ’cause we weren’t sure. One of our boys was pretty ill, so we didn’t like to say anything, and we’re very private about things like this, so we didn’t wanna say anything. But I think we’ll be going in the studio in May in Vancouver. Which means, we should be getting ready.”

Johnson added, “It’s been 40 years of the band’s existence, so I think we’re gonna try to do 40 gigs, 40 shows, to thank the fans for their undying loyalty. I mean, honestly, our fans are just the best in the world, and we appreciate every one of them. So, like I said, we’ll have to go out, even though we’re getting a bit long in the tooth [Laughs].”

Johnson alluded to one of the members of the band being ill in a 2012 interview, adding that the unnamed member was “getting better” with a “full recovery fully expected.”

Meanwhile, bassist Cliff Williams hinted in March 2013 that guitarists Angus and Malcolm Young were writing music for the band’s next album.

British heavy metal legends JUDAS PRIEST have completed work on their brand new studio album, to be released later in the year.

Speaking to Artisan News at last night’s (Monday, March 17) VIP listening party for the Ronnie James Dio tribute album “This Is Your Life” and awards gala at the Avalon in Hollywood, California, JUDAS PRIEST singer Rob Halford stated about the band’s new CD (see video below): “The record is finished; it’s absolutely finished as of today.” He added: “It’s a relief. It’s a relief because whenever PRIEST makes an album, like any band, you put your heart and soul into it; it is that typical ‘blood, sweat and tears.’ It’s not an easy thing to do 40 years later. But PRIEST has always been up for the challenge of that, and it’s one of things that we love to do more than anything else as we move on through our metal years. So this is a great time for PRIEST: 40th anniversary, a brand new record. Life couldn’t be better.”

In a 2013 interview with Billboard.com, Halford described the new PRIEST CD’s sound as “hard. It’s heavy. It’s something we think our PRIEST fans will be thrilled with. We know we have a reputation to maintain, and we know we have to deliver something really strong and solid. The album is going to be full of all the great things you love about JUDAS PRIEST — I don’t think I can say anything more than that without being hung, drawn and quartered.”

Speaking to VH1 Radio Network‘s Dave Basner, Halford said about what fans can expect from JUDAS PRIEST‘s next LP: “We felt it was very important to follow up [2008’s] ‘Nostradamus’, the last release, and that was a concept experiment and it was a real success for us and the fans loved it, but I think our fans and ourselves as a band, we want to get back to the side of PRIEST that we haven’t heard for a few years and reemphasize and remake those big, heavy metal statements again.”

PRIEST‘s next album will mark the band’s first release with Richie Faulkner, most recently guitarist in the backing band for Lauren Harris (daughter of IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris).

Faulkner joined PRIEST as the replacement for original PRIEST guitarist Kenneth “K.K.” Downing, who announced his retirement from the band in April 2011.

Asked how it has been collaborating on new music with Faulkner, Halford told Guitar World in a 2012 interview: “Really, really strong. Exciting. He’s riffing and saying, ‘Robby, I’m thinking of this and this and this.’ It’s really exciting to have that kind of energy, because you feed off of it.”

He added: “[Richie] went through the ritual on [the ‘Epitaph’] tour, did great work on stage, the fans embraced him, so it’s now time to see what we’re capable of, the writing trio of Glenn [Tipton] and Richie and myself.”

Regarding whether technology has changed JUDAS PRIEST‘s songwriting process at all, Halford said: “It’s dangerous to walk around with a flash drive on a bunch of keys. [Laughs] To a great extent, it doesn’t really change. The technology is amazing in terms of the advantages it brings to music now, some of it good, some of it very bad. It’s all about discipline and self-belief, determination, wanting to do the best you can do and not accepting anything that’s below par. We’ve always had that attitude in PRIEST. We’ve always felt really strongly about any track that goes out for our fans. We’re still doing it like we always have: firing up the riffs and finding a vocal melody to go with it, me going into me wonderful world of the Roget’s Thesaurus and trying to come up with a new lyric and a new idea. And that’s what we’ve been doing for four decades.”

According to The Pulse Of Radio, film producer Harvey Weinstein says that LED ZEPPELIN did not appear at last year’s 12.12.12 concert for Hurricane Sandy relief due to Jimmy Page passing on the charity gig. Weinstein was on hand at the Toronto International Film Festival for the screening of the 12.12.12 documentary, and revealed that he pulled out all the stops to ensure that ZEPPELIN appeared — even asking former President Bill Clinton and President Obama to personally lobby the guitarist so that the ZEPPELIN reunion could help raise funds for the suffering and displaced Easterners.

Weinstein said: “We get an OK from [Robert] Plant if Page will do it. . . Jimmy Page doesn’t want to do it. Bill [Clinton] talked to the group and Jimmy told him no. Jimmy Page struck out Obama and Bill Clinton. . . that will live on in infamy.”

Jimmy Page explained that the recently released “Celebration Day” CD/DVD of ZEPPELIN‘s 2007 London reunion concert was a chance to rectify some of ZEPPELIN‘s less-than-stellar post-breakup reunion performances. “We had the opportunity to get together again — which is what we had there, to do the O2 — with those, y’know, things that left us a bit uncomfortable like the Live Aid and Atlantic 40th (anniversary concert), etc.,” he said. “But we really just wanted to get it right and go out there to play to people who maybe never heard us, who had heard about this reputation and what we’re about, and basically go out and stand out and be counted for what we were.”

Founding BLUE ÖYSTER CULT keyboardist and guitarist Allen Lanier died earlier today (Wednesday, August 14) of chronic lung disease. He was 66 years old.

Said the band in a statement: “We have extremely sad news to report. We’ve lost our friend and bandmate Allen Lanier. Allen succumbed to complications from C.O.P.D. [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease]. He is survived by his wife Dory, sister Mary Anne and mother Martha. Although he retired from touring in 2006, Allen returned to the stage for what turned out to be his final appearance, reuniting with BLUE ÖYSTER CULT at the 40th-anniversary show in New York this past November.

“[Don’t fear the reaper] sweet man. We love you and miss you.”

Added BLUE ÖYSTER CULT frontman Eric Bloom: “My great friend Allen Lanier has passed. I’ll miss the guy even though we hadn’t spoken in awhile. He was so talented as a musician and a thinker. He read voraciously, all kinds of things, especially comparative religion. We drove for years together, shared rooms in the early days. We partied, laughed, played. All BLUE ÖYSTER CULT fans and band members will mourn his death. Ultimately, smoking finally got to him. He had been hospitalized with C.O.P.D.

“It was Allen who heard some old college band tapes of mine and suggested I get a shot as the singer in 1968. A lot of great memories, over 40 years’ worth. Maybe he’s playing a tune with Jim Carroll right now.”

Lanier was a member of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT since the band’s inception in 1967 until his retirement in 2006.
