Swedish death metal veterans GRAVE celebrated their 25th anniversary as a band with a headlining performance last night (Friday, September 6) at Debaser Medis in Stockholm.

The current lineup of GRAVEOla Lindgren (vocals and guitar), Ronnie Bergerstål (drums, ex-CENTINEX), Tobias Cristiansson (bass, ex-DISMEMBER) and Mika Lagrén (guitar, FACEBREAKER) — performed songs from all its albums, as well as “a handful of demo songs and other goodies” from its career. GRAVE also offered the official anniversary ring that was only sold at the 25th-anniversary show.

1988 was the year when GRAVE (originally known as CORPSE) created delightful death symphonies with the release of its first demo, “Sick Disgust Eternal”, which was similar to the brutality of NIHILIST and CARNAGE, both of which were launched in Stockholm around the same time. GRAVE — along with ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER and UNLEASHED — has since marched to the forefront of the Swedish death metal scene and continues to be worshipped by metalheads all over the world.

After the concert, the band wrote on its Facebook page: “Huuuuge thanks to each and every one of you who showed up to the anniversary gig last night. We had a kick-ass time entertaining you, although a set this long takes its toll on an old man, hehe.

“We played one track from all of our releases starting with the ‘Sick Disgust Eternal’ demo up ’til today’s most recent release, ‘Morbid Ascent’.”

GRAVE‘s setlist for last night’s show:

01. Into The Grave (1988 demo version)
02. Sexual Mutilation
03. Reborn Miscarriage
04. Deformed
05. And Here I Die
06. Christi(Ns)Anity
07. Soulless
08. Worth The Wait
09. Rise
10. Out Of The Light
11. Living The Dead Behind
12. 8th Dominion
13. Dismembered Mind
14. Passion Of The Weak
15. Morbid Ascent

Cult German thrashers DARKNESS have reformed with a new lineup featuring two original members, Andreas “Lacky” Lackaw and Arnd Klink, alongside guitar players Bony Fertigmensch and Meik Heitkamp and bassist Christian “Speesy” Giesler of fellow German thrashers KREATOR.

After a few years with EURE ERBEN, Lackaw and Klink decided to resurrect the old spirit and bring DARKNESS back to life.

DARKNESS released three albums between 1987 and 1989 (“Death Squad”, “Defenders Of Justice” and “Conclusion & Revival”) and split after European tour with MUCKY PUP. In 2004, Arnd and Lacky teamed together to play thrash metal with German lyrics in the band EURE ERBEN but after the “Death Squad” 25th-anniversary show in Essen, they felt it was the right moment to reform DARKNESS.

DARKNESS“Death Squad” album, which many fans consider to be a Teutonic thrash metal masterpiece, was reissued by High Roller Records on blue and black vinyl. Every copy includes a lyric sheet and a huge poster.

EUROPE‘s 30th-anniversary performance at this year’s edition of the Sweden Rock Festival in Sölvesborg, Sweden was the band’s only Swedish concert of 2013 and the stage show was one of the greatest, if not the greatest of the band’s entire career. The setlist was specially composed from EUROPE‘s entire nine-album discography, including their cult debut “Europe” (1983), multi-million-seller “The Final Countdown” (1986) and their most recent outing, “Bag Of Bones” (2012), which has now reached gold status in Sweden. The performance was also professionally filmed and recorded for release on double CD, DVD and Blu-ray, to be made available on October 16 in Scandinavia via Gain, in the rest of Europe through Edel, and in Japan via JVC.

“Live At Sweden Rock – 30th Anniversary Show” contains live renditions of 28 songs, including cover versions of THIN LIZZY‘s “Jailbreak” (featuring a guest appearance by THIN LIZZY‘s Scott Gorham) and UFO‘s “Lights Out” (featuring ex-UFO guitarist Michael Schenker).

“Live At Sweden Rock – 30th Anniversary Show” track listing:

09. Paradize Bay
10. Girl From Lebanon

For the record: today’s version of EUROPE is identical to the classic “The Final Countdown” lineup: Joey Tempest (vocals), John Norum (guitar), John Levén (bass), Mic Michaeli (keyboards) and Ian Haugland (drums).

“Bag Of Bones” was released in Europe on April 27, 2012 via earMusic/Edel. The CD, which features a guest appearance by blues-rock guitarist Joe Bonamassa (BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION), was produced by Kevin Shirley, who has previously worked with IRON MAIDEN, Joe Bonamassa, BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION, BLACK STONE CHERRY and JOURNEY, among others.

Founding BLUE ÖYSTER CULT keyboardist and guitarist Allen Lanier died earlier today (Wednesday, August 14) of chronic lung disease. He was 66 years old.

Said the band in a statement: “We have extremely sad news to report. We’ve lost our friend and bandmate Allen Lanier. Allen succumbed to complications from C.O.P.D. [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease]. He is survived by his wife Dory, sister Mary Anne and mother Martha. Although he retired from touring in 2006, Allen returned to the stage for what turned out to be his final appearance, reuniting with BLUE ÖYSTER CULT at the 40th-anniversary show in New York this past November.

“[Don’t fear the reaper] sweet man. We love you and miss you.”

Added BLUE ÖYSTER CULT frontman Eric Bloom: “My great friend Allen Lanier has passed. I’ll miss the guy even though we hadn’t spoken in awhile. He was so talented as a musician and a thinker. He read voraciously, all kinds of things, especially comparative religion. We drove for years together, shared rooms in the early days. We partied, laughed, played. All BLUE ÖYSTER CULT fans and band members will mourn his death. Ultimately, smoking finally got to him. He had been hospitalized with C.O.P.D.

“It was Allen who heard some old college band tapes of mine and suggested I get a shot as the singer in 1968. A lot of great memories, over 40 years’ worth. Maybe he’s playing a tune with Jim Carroll right now.”

Lanier was a member of BLUE ÖYSTER CULT since the band’s inception in 1967 until his retirement in 2006.
