Dread Sovereign: titans of torment

Clearly not content with fronting the classic metal supergroup Twilight Of The Gods and contributing two traditional music reinterpretations to the forthcoming One And All, Together, For Home compilation (listen to one of them here), Primordial vocalist Alan Nemtheanga has turned his restless muse to the archaic atmospheres of epic doom. The result is All Hell’s Martyrs, the debut full-length from Dublin’s Dread Sovereign – an album one year in the making, but one that sounds like it’s been simmering over the flames of the Inquisition for a good few centuries.

Released on Ván Records on March 21, All Hell’s Martyrs is vast in its scope as it casts its unblinking gaze over aeons of religious persecution and dogma, summoning the spirits of Candlemass and Manilla Road, but providing a unique perspective on classic doom as the album builds its way to a soul-shattering, unforgettable conclusion. Thanks to the benevolent folk at Ván, Metal Hammer is proud to host an exclusive stream of the album in its full, all-castigating glory. Abandon all hope, enter the portal below and have a magnificently grimm St Patrick’s day of reckoning!

Toxic Holocaust

Toxic Holocaust: apocalypse now

Chemistry Of Consciousness, Toxic Holocaust’s forthcoming first album in five years proves once again that thrash is at its most potent when a) you throw in a whole bunch of sonic pollutants, and b) you actually sound like some badass, nuclear-apocalypse-surviving warrior of the wastelands.

Featuring all manner of d-beats, caustic, black metal atmospheres, true punk venom and an air of genuine menace throughout, Chemistry… - released on October 25 via Relapse Records - is scabrous, coal-eyed thrash metal that that belongs more in the unholy, confrontational company of bands like Destroyer 666, Aura Noir and Nekromantheon than it does in the cleaner cut, more classicist purveyors of the form. Now head honcho Joel Grind has released the track Rat Eater like some particularly nasty flesh-ravaging virus and you can hear it exclusively right here. Thash till death! And beyond!

Sweden’s IN SOLITUDE will release its third album, “Sister”, on October 1 in North America via Metal Blade Records. The CD was recorded this past March at Studio Cobra in Stockholm, Sweden and was produced and mixed by Martin “Konie” Ehrencrona. It stands as a logical next step above and beyond its predecessor, “The World. The Flesh. The Devil.”

IN SOLITUDE‘s strength resides in its ability to craft dark and oppressive atmospheres within the auditory realm of classic heavy metal. “Sister” compounds this trademark sound further, beginning with the acoustic intro, “He Comes”, and saturates the record in an aura of uniqueness; see “Lavender” and the title track. The album concludes with an eight-minute, driving, near trance-like opus that features guest guitarist Pelle Forsberg (WATAIN). Additionally, Jarboe of SWANS fame can be heard on “Horses In The Ground”. Moods range from MERCYFUL FATE-esque guitar flavors, shadows of BLACK SABBATH, the heavy dissonance of SWANS, to straight-forward, ear worm riffs. In any case, one thing can be said for certain: their delivery is as genuine as it is impressive.

Comments IN SOLITUDE vocalist Pelle Åhman: “It’s time to release our third album, and things have never felt this clear and pervasive before. This is a feeling that has permeated our whole lives during the latest year of writing and recording this album, as well as digesting and dealing with its consequences. And it has been wonderful, overwhelming and utterly devastating. Which, in the world of IN SOLITUDE, are very positive things, and exactly what was required. It is a very special album for us, and I am very thankful and proud of my brothers (including our great friend, and producer, Martin Konie Ehrencrona), for this is truly the most visceral music we’ve ever made, and we can’t wait for you to experience it too.”

“Sister” track listing:

01. He Comes
02. Death Knows Where
03. A Buried Sun
04. Pallid Hands
05. Lavender
06. Sister
07. Horses in the Ground
08. Inmost Nigredo

North American fans will have an opportunity to see IN SOLITUDE live this fall. The band will support WATAIN on the “Wild Hunt” tour beginning on October 8 in New York City. The tour also features support from TRIBULATION.

It took a little while to grow on me, but Scale the Summit's latest effort The Migration is a really solid listen. If "lush technical atmospheres" were a genre, then they're the kings. Stream it above courtesy of Decibel magsazine! It's a cool record and a solid listen through like I said before if you're into that …

“A Fair Dream Gone Mad,” the debut album from Sacramento, California-based dark/progressive quartet, In The Silence – initially confirmed for official release via Sensory Records this month – has been moved back several weeks. Due to a manufacturing mishap, the final product has been delayed, and the record will now be in stores for its new street date, Tuesday, May 7th. The following press release was also issued about the band: “Musically comparable to the emotional output of Katatonia, Porcupine Tree and Opeth but boasting a more progressive nature than said acts, In The Silence surges with incredibly moving riffs and otherworldly atmospheres, boasting a huge mid-tone clean vocal performance atop a thunderous display of technical metal percussion.

Serments will be releasing “Erotic Drive” this coming November 25th, and the band has now posted an advanced track online titled “Prostitute,” which can be heard below. The following press release was also issued about the band:

“Serments, the five-piece rock/metal band born in 2005, has really taken life and evolved among the Parisian scene since 2007. With its first 5 track-EP ‘Gone Away,’ auto-produced and self-released in 2008, Serments went on stage with bands such as Lunatic Age, Hey Hey My My, Devianz and Madame de Montespan.

“Produced by Christian Carvin (Eths), ‘Utopia,’ the debut full-length album wasreleased on 2009 and revealed a skillful mixture of a furious, clear and confident voice, heavy riffs tinged with melancholic atmospheres, which make of this first album a key element enabling the band to suggest a music rich in feelings.

“Well determined to show all the strength of its universe and all the energy emanating from the combo when on stage, Serments is gonna release a brand new album called “Erotic Drive” digitally in 3 versions – black (for the violence face of the band), white (for the ambient one) and color (for both faces) – on November 25th.”
