Tarja Virmakari of Metal Shock Finland and TrueMetal.it recently conducted an interview with bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker of reactivated British extreme metal pioneers CARCASS. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

Asked about his views on illegal music downloading, Walker said: “It can be a positive thing, if people download an album, hear it, enjoy it and buy it. The danger is that there is a hard core of people who download and never buy anything, and that’s damaging to the music scene. They’re not supporting anybody, they’re not supporting the artists as fans. But for the most part, I think it’s positive. Because I understand fully why people do it. There’s so much music out there; people don’t have the money or the resources to buy everything. And also people have probably spent or wasted money in the past on albums that have disappointed them. So it gives people a chance to test something before they buy it. I personally don’t think it’s any different to hearing music on the radio. But, like I say, it’s that hard core of people, who… their attitude is very nihilistic and it’s out of step with the idea of what being a fan is about. You shouldn’t be trying to damage the artist who’s trying to being people pleasure. We’re not at war with the audience.”

In a recent interview with Chile’s Radio Futuro, Walker stated about the new CARCASS CD: “We think we’ve made a good album, so it’s gonna be very interesting when people get to hear the record. We can’t wait to see what people think.”

He continued: “It sounds like CARCASS. Even the drumming sounds like CARCASS. Everything about it… I think it’s gonna shock people, how good it is. I think it’s got all the elements that people like, yet it still sounds fresh. So that’s all I can say, really, ’cause we don’t really sound like any other band, and the fact that after 17 years, we wrote music and it still sounds like CARCASS, I think it’s good.”

Regarding the direction of the new CARCASS album, Walker previously stated: “We’ve taken stylistic cues from all the albums because it’s in our blood, but it’s no rehash or mess of ideas. I think it sounds almost like the missing link between the third and forth albums but with some groove in there. I’ve jokingly christened some parts ‘trad blast’ and some ‘death sleaze’… don’t think for a minute this is just some nostalgic throwback album — we’re setting up another 17 years of ideas for other bands to copy and clean up on. [laughs]”

Vocalist Ray Alder of American progressive metallers FATES WARNING was interviewed on the latest edition of “The Classic Metal Show”, which is heard live on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. EST at TheClassicMetalShow.com. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

FATES WARNING‘s eleventh studio album, “Darkness In A Different Light”, will be released in North America on October 1 via InsideOut Music.

Featuring founding guitarist Jim Matheos alongside classic-lineup members Ray Alder (vocals) and Frank Aresti (guitar), longtime bassist Joey Vera and drummer Bobby Jarzombek, “Darkness In A Different Light” was produced by Matheos and mixed by longtime FATES WARNING engineer Phil Magnotti. The effort was mastered by Maor Appelbaum (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, SEPULTURA, ANVIL) at Maor Appelbaum Mastering in California. The cover artwork was designed by Conte di San Pietro.

In addition to the standard CD jewel case and the digital download format, “Darkness In A Different Light” will be available in Europe as 2CD mediabook edition and as gatefold 2LP version (180-gram vinyl in black, red or white vinyl) with four bonus tracks.

“Darkness In A Different Light” track listing:

CD 1

01. One Thousand
02. Firefly
03. Desire
04. Falling
05. I Am
06. Lighthouse
07. Into The Black
08. Kneel And Obey
09. O Chloroform
10. And Yet It Moves

CD 2

01. Firefly (extended)
02. Falling Further
03. One (live)
04. Life In Still Water (live)

Regarding the song “Firefly”, Alder said: “‘Firefly’ is very personal to me in more ways than one….

“After I had written the melody for this song, I knew immediately what the title was going to be, as well as the subject; it just fit the mood.

“As for the subject, I’m pretty sure we’ve all felt this way at one time or another.

“Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you think they would, but that’s okay, that’s part of life… We move on. Ironically, while recording ‘Firefly’ in New Hampshire, I was outside the studio late one night, and there they were, floating through the trees in the forest! I hadn’t seen a single firefly for at least fifteen years since I had left my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, so I kinda took it as a sign. A sign of what, I don’t know… But very ironic nonetheless…”

On the topic of “Darkness In A Different Light” as a whole, Alder said: “‘Darkness In A Different Light’ is the result of almost two years of very hard work from everyone in the band.

“I believe that this lineup is the best that FATES WARNING has ever had, and I also think that it comes through in the music on this album.

“It’s been almost nine years since our last studio album and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished here.

“We are looking very much forward to playing some new songs for our fans who have stuck by us over all these years.

“We plan on touring as much as possible for ‘Darkness In A Different Light’ and hopefully we’ll hit a few places we’ve never been.”

FATES WARNING will embark on a North American tour in November. The trek will launch November 15 in Joliet, Illinois and wrap December 14 in Seattle, Washington.

Zisis Petkanas of Greece’s Rock Overdose recently conducted an interview with Tom Keifer, best known as the singer/songwriter/guitarist of the Philadelphia-based blues-rock band CINDERELLA. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

Keifer‘s debut solo album, “The Way Life Goes”, sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 78 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD was released on April 30 via Merovee Records (through Warner Music Group‘s Independent Label Group).

The collection of 14 new songs ranges from intimate, organic, acoustic tracks to driving hard rock. It embraces the blues, rock and country roots that have always been present in his unique sound that has generated the sale of over 15 million records worldwide for CINDERELLA. Rolling Stone praised Keifer as “a gritty, bluesy (rocker) with enough genuine swagger to draw comparisons to Mick Jagger.”

“This record was a labor of love,” Keifer told TriCities.com. “When I started this record, CINDERELLA was in the middle of a lawsuit with Sony Records. This record is not in any way to be taken as me stepping away from CINDERELLA.”

“I took a lot of time making this record,” he continued. “I made it over 10 years. I wanted to make something I loved. My wife, Savannah (Snow), co-wrote a lot of the songs with me. It was a blessing to me.

“Each song has something to do with life. It’s just life, love, love lost, being crazy, going crazy, being lost. The record, there’s no change, really, in style. It has the peaks and valleys.

“I’ve always approached music, played music that I like. I’ve never chased trends through CINDERELLA and with this album. It reflects what’s in me.”

“The Flower Song”, the album’s first single, was serviced to AAA radio stations nationwide on February 4, while “Solid Ground” was serviced to all rock formats on March 11.

Keifer wrote “The Flower Song” with Jim Peterik, formerly of the bands SURVIVOR and the IDES OF MARCH.

“The Way Life Goes” is a raw, introspective look at the roller coaster ride that has been Keifer‘s life for the past 15 years. From being told that he would never sing again as a result of a partially paralyzed left vocal cord, to the emotional and personal battles that followed, his solo debut is a story of perseverance, a testament to the power of passion and will, when combined with a true love of music.

“It’s pretty scary,” Keifer said of his vocal paralysis. “I’ve had six surgeries to deal with the collateral damage. Performing… has been difficult for me because of the vocal issues I’ve had. I work several hours every day on that. That’s a difficult thing for me every day.”

Metal Kaoz recently conducted an interview with former EXODUS and LEGACY (pre-TESTAMENT) and current HATRIOT frontman Steve “Zetro” Souza. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

HATRIOT has entered the studio to begin recording its sophomore album, “Dawn Of The New Centurion”, for a February 2014 release via Massacre Records. The follow-up to 2013’s “Heroes Of Origin” is once again being helmed by producer producer Juan Urteaga, who has previously worked with MACHINE HEAD, EXODUS and TESTAMENT, among others.

“Over the past year, HATRIOT has grown tighter as a band, and the songs on the new record will reflect that,” said Souza. “The songs are longer and more melodic, while keeping the classic thrash metal feel that we are known for.

‘Heroes Of Origin’ was our ‘Kill ‘Em All’, and ‘Dawn Of The New Centurion’ is our ‘Ride The Lightning’.”

The first single from “Dawn Of The New Centurion” will be “The Fear Within”.

HATRIOT will be touring Europe in November and December of 2013, and plans on including some new material into its live set.

HATRIOT filmed a video for the song “And Your Children To Be Damned” on March 10 at Arlene Francis Center in Santa Rosa, California. The clip was directed by Mike Sloat, who has previously worked with MACHINE HEAD and TESTAMENT.

“And Your Children To Be Damned” was written about Countess Bathory, a countess from the renowned Báthory family of nobility in the Kingdom of Hungary, who has been labeled the most prolific female serial killer in history, although the number of murders is debated.

HATRIOT‘s drummer is none other than Steve‘s son, Nicholas Souza. Nicholas auditioned for the band after the departure of Alex Bent and “proved himself to be the best choice,” according to Steve.

HATRIOT‘s lineup also includes Zetro‘s son Cody, who got his first bass as a present from his father after Zetro bought it off current EXODUS bassist Jack Gibson. “I told him,” Zetro said in a recent interview with Metalholic.com, “‘You have to try out [for the bassist position in HATRIOT if you want to be in the band]. There’s no nepotism here, boy. If you can hang, you’re on.’ So he actually tried out, and he got the gig.”

Regarding HATRIOT‘s musical direction, Zetro said, “It’s in the vein of typical Bay Area thrash, but these guys are a lot younger, so there’s gonna be some blast-beats in there. There’s gonna be some kind of death [metal] approach to it, a little bit. ‘Cause these guys are new. They’re raw, and they’re fast, young, heavy, hard and aggressive, and I’m trying to convey that along as well.”

He added, “These new kids seem to understand what we did in the ’80s, but still bring a little bit of a new essence to it. We put that together with what I write vocally and it’s turned out to be really, really killer. It’s good stuff.”

GWAR frontman Oderus Urungus was interviewed on the latest edition of “The Classic Metal Show”, which is heard live on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. EST at TheClassicMetalShow.com. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

GWAR‘s new album, “Battle Maximus” — the band’s first full-length studio effort since the loss of their longtime guitar player Flattus Maximus — is set to hit the streets on September 17 on Metal Blade Records.

“This album is both a tribute to Flattus and a telling of the next chapter in the story of GWAR,” said Oderus Urungus. “The combo of the brand new album and show should satisfy even the most hardcore Flattus devotee with the fact that GWAR‘s slay-skills are as supreme as ever, and the band stands poised to embark on our most earth-shattering world tour yet. We have mourned, we have honored, and now it’s time to fucking DEVASTATE in the name of Flattus and the supreme entity that is GWAR.”

Oderus continued: “This is our first record in our brand-new Slave Pit Studios, which Flattus had a lead role in designing, but without him we had no one left to twiddle the buttons, much less play the blazing metal leads and provide the musical direction that rescued GWAR from the depths of clown-band obscurity. I mean, Balsac is no slouch, but Flattus‘ departure left a huge hole in our band. We had no choice. We had to blow the Horn of Hate…”

The follow-up to 2011’s critically acclaimed “Bloody Pit Of Horror”, “Battle Maximus” features twelve brand new tracks that not only honor their departed ally, but tells the story of GWAR‘s latest struggle against what may be their greatest enemy yet… the insidious “Mr. Perfect”, who has travelled through time itself to steal the power of GWAR — the power of immortality, and use this power to mutate the human race into his twisted vision of what the “perfect” human should be. Once again GWAR finds themselves as the only thing standing between the human race and the latest super-powered shithead bent on the destruction of GWAR and the enslavement of their worshippers.

“Battle Maximus” track listing:

01. Intro
02. Madness At The Core Of Time

07. Raped At Birth

Mat Sinner (PRIMAL FEAR, SINNER) was interviewed on the latest edition of “The Classic Metal Show”, which is heard live on Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. EST at TheClassicMetalShow.com. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

SINNER‘s album of re-recorded versions of the best songs from the band’s early years, “Touch Of Sin 2” (in a nod to SINNER‘s 1985 album, “Touch Of Sin”), was released on August 30 in Europe and September 10 in North America via AFM Records.

Commented Sinner: “When we were younger and new to the music business, we were proud to be part of the Noise Records family and to get the chance to sign a contract with them. Reading this contract so many years later, you can’t but shake your head in disbelief and wonder what must have possessed us. The exclusive rights to the recordings have since been bought and sold numerous times with the effect that none of those who owned them has ever had any relation to either the production itself or to how it was created.

“Today, the older SINNER songs still enjoy great popularity within the scene. We continue to play them live, even though the CDs aren’t available any longer. It is Universal who owns the albums at the moment — but does not distribute the CDs. Therefore, they’re to be held responsible that CDs from this era can only be purchased at exorbitant prices. Unfortunately, the musicians and songwriters involved have no means of dealing with the matter — our hands are tied.

“When I offered to do a remix on several songs for a best-of album, I was told that the original tapes have mysteriously disappeared and were probably burned in an ‘accidental’ fire. That much about the pearls of our past.

AFM Records and I — business partners for many years — came up with the idea to once again record the best songs from this era. The album was supposed to feature several guests and to come with a wicked fan package. Initially, I was sceptical. But recent shows have shown the amount of fun and energy the band would put into these songs. However, I will only put this plan into action under one condition: the whole band has to lock themselves into the studio and record the whole thing together. I’m fed up with the assumption that it works if everyone records their stuff at home or comes cheaper. That’s bullshit — this challenge meets us at exactly the right time and we’ll face it!”

“Touch Of Sin 2”, which was mixed by Achim Köhler (PRIMAL FEAR, BRAINSTORM), features guest appearances by David Readman (PINK CREAM 69, VOODOO CIRCLE), Erik Martensson (ECLIPSE, W.E.T.), Tom Naumann (PRIMAL FEAR) and Diego Valdez (HELKER).

“Touch Of Sin 2” track listing:

01. Born To Rock
02. Comin’ Out Fighting
03. Bad Girl
04. Knife In My Heart
05. Concrete Jungle
06. Don’t Believe A Word
07. Shout
08. Germany Rocks
09. Danger Zone
10. Emerald
11. Blood On The Sand
12. Lost In A Minute
13. Masquerade
14. Heat Of The City

The official lyric video for “Comin’ Out Fighting” can be seen below.

SINNER‘s latest album, “One Bullet Left”, was released in September 2011 via AFM Records, the CD was recorded in Stuttgart, Germany with Mat Sinner producing and Achim Köhler engineering.

SINNER‘s current lineup features Mat Sinner (bass, vocals) and guitarist Christof Leim (THE NEW BLACK) along with Alexander Scholpp (TARJA, FARMER BOYS) on guitar, André Hilgers (RAGE) on drums and Alexander Beyrodt (PRIMAL FEAR, VOODOO CIRCLE) on third guitar.
