Reunited grunge legends SOUNDGARDEN played their landmark 1994 “Superunknown” album last night (Thursday, March 13) at the iTunes Festival, which made its U.S. debut as part of the ongoing South By Southwest festivities in Austin, Texas.

The event was streamed live through the iTunes store and was available on all personal computers and mobile devices.

Fan-filmed video footage of SOUNDGARDEN‘s concert can be seen below.

Last month, SOUNDGARDEN announced that it will be releasing two special deluxe editions of “Superunknown”.

“Superunknown – Deluxe Edition”, which will feature the remastered album as well as b-sides, demos and rehearsals, will hit stores on June 3.

“Superunknown – Super Deluxe Edition” will also hit stores on June 3 but will be a full five CD set with a hardcover book and photos.

SOUNDGARDEN forntman Chris Cornell told Billboard.com that the idea for a “Superunknown” show came about after the group put together the special 20th anniversary deluxe editions. “It’s the idea of the reissue and recognizing it as an anniversary, which I don’t think is our instinct, ever,” Cornell explained. “But it seemed kinda to make sense for this album. If you can single out any of our albums as being, like, the most iconic one, it’s obviously this one. I think it’s an accomplishment, and I’m proud we did it. So it’s kind of a cool thing to do and concentrate on.”

As for the performance, Cornell opened by explaining to the audience: “I want to apologize ahead of time because there are so many different tunings on this album and when we sequenced it, we didn’t really care about that… so we’re going to switch guitars a lot on pretty much every single song.”

The singer told Billboard.com: “When you start with the tunings, it seems like a more disjoined album than it really is when you play it in order, because each tuning has its own personality. But the whole album seems to flow naturally, but when you look at it closer it seems less fluid in a way.”

Mitchell Peters of Billboard.biz recently conducted an interview with Scott Sokol, SLAYER‘s booking agent at Pinnacle Entertainment for the past 15 years.

Asked if there were ever discussions about taking a break from touring after the May 2013 death of SLAYER guitarist Jeff Hanneman, Sokol said: “I think if it happened while they were on tour it might’ve been different. But Jeff hadn’t been [touring] with the band for close to three years at this point. So it wasn’t like [Hanneman‘s replacement] Gary Holt [of EXODUS] was new to the equation. At the time of Jeff‘s passing, Gary had been in the band for two and a half years. It wasn’t going to help anybody to cancel what they were doing. The band likes to go out there and play. Not that I’m a counselor, or anything, but I think part of the way they deal with things is to do what they love. And they love to go out there and do their thing.”

Sokol also spoke about how SLAYER‘s live show has changed since Gary Holt joined the band to replace Jeff Hanneman. “I don’t think they’ve really missed a beat there,” he said. “There’s no replacement for Jeff. Gary doesn’t replace Jeff, who is a legend unto himself. But Gary Holt, to a degree, is also that. He’s just a little different stylistically. Brian Johnson and Bon Scott are different frontmen for AC/DC, but both are legendary in their own right. So in some way you could look at it like that.”

Regarding whether there are plans for the band to record some new material soon, Sokol said: “They’re definitely working on new music. More things will be revealed in the coming weeks.”

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH has unleashed a game-play video for its new single, “Battle Born”. The action-packed clip, which was created by Machinima director Jackfrags and based on the popular “Battlefield 4” video game, can be seen below.

It felt like I’d seen almost every inch of the globe and shook every hand there was to shake. I completely lost track of time, the flights, the travel, the shows all seemed to blur together. My family and friends became a distant memory. Even though I was doing what I’d dreamed of doing, it took all the energy that I had… it was exhausting. That made me realize, everything worth fighting for you will actually HAVE TO fight for. Every wish, every dream, every idea comes to existence only through blood, sweat and sacrifice… We are all battle born.”

“The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell Volume 2” track listing:

01. Here To Die
02. Weight Beneath My Sin

The official video for the song “The Enemy Inside” from progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER can be seen below (courtesy of Billboard.com). The track comes off the band’s new, self-titled album, which will be released on September 24 via Roadrunner Records. Directed by Bill Fishman (RAMONES, STEVE RAY VAUGHAN), the strictly conceptual clip deals with the torment of a soldier who’s struggling with reintegrating into his life back home due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Regarding the song’s lyrics, guitarist John Petrucci tells Billboard.com: “At the time that we were in the studio working on the [new DREAM THEATER] album and I was writing lyrics, the Boston Marathon bombings happened. There was a lot of discussion of terrorism and PTSD as if affects people who witness traumatic events like terrorism, so it was just very on my mind. It linked very well with the mood of the song, and as we started to get into it, I watched some documentaries and things like that. I was like, ‘This is really something that needs to be written about.'”

Speaking to Ultimate-Guitar.com, Petrucci stated about “Dream Theater”: “I think it’s building on [what we did on the “A Dramatic Turn of Events” album], but taking it to the next level. One of the things I really wanted to do on ‘A Dramatic Turn of Events’ was to create something that was sonically very rich and high-def and powerful and I think we accomplished that. But on this album, I wanted to take that even further…. [I wanted to] get more cinematic with it and more earthy and aggressive and bigger. I wanted a bigger, more forward in-your-face kind of sound. I think that kind of dictated the sounds we went for while we were writing and recording and then ultimately how it was mixed. So yeah, it was kind of building on that, but taking it to the next level. You always need to progress and to try and do something different and kind of have a little bit different take on it and a different perspective. But hopefully make it better as you go.”

The nine-track disc was recorded at Cove City Studio in Glen Cove, Long Island, with Petrucci producing and Richard Chycki engineering and mixing. It’s the band’s second album with drummer Mike Mangini, and the first one on which he was a part of the writing process from Day One.

In January, Petrucci said of Mangini‘s work: “When people hear the drumming on this album, they’re gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn’t there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”

“Dream Theater” track listing:

01. False Awakening Suite
I. Sleep Paralysis
II. Night Terrors
III. Lucid Dream
02. The Enemy Inside
03. The Looking Glass
04. Enigma Machine
05. The Bigger Picture
06. Behind The Veil
07. Surrender To Reason
08. Along For The Ride
09. Illumination Theory
I. Paradoxe de la Lumière Noire
II. Live, Die, Kill
III. The Embracing Circle
IV. The Pursuit of Truth
V. Surrender, Trust & Passion

“Dream Theater” will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180-gram double LP, and a limited-edition boxed set.

DREAM THEATER will be on tour in Europe in January and February 2014, and in North America in March 2014.

“Live At Luna Park”, DREAM THEATER‘s live concert, which was previously scheduled for release in May via Eagle Rock Entertainment, will now drop in North America on November 5 as a Blu-ray, 2DVD, 2DVD + 3CD, Blu-ray + 3CD, deluxe edition with 40-page book, Blu-ray + 2DVD + 3CD, and digital video via iTunes.

“Live At Luna Park” was filmed over two nights in South America — home to one of DREAM THEATER‘s most ardent fanbases. The DVD was filmed August 19 and August 20, 2012 at Estadio Luna Park in Buenos Aires, Argentina after a 15-month world tour, hitting 35 countries.

Zakk Wylde: willing to pay respects to his fallen brother

Zakk Wylde has addressed longheld speculation that should the surviving members of Pantera ever perform together again, he could be the man to step in on guitar duties.

“It’d be up to Vinnie, Phil and Rex — they’re the guys that make everything happen,” he tells Artisan News. “So if they were all gonna do it and honor Dimebag and [if they said to me], ‘Zakk, would you wanna honor Dime and do Dime’s parts?’ Of course, I was a pallbearer for him — I laid him to rest — so, of course, I’d say, it would be a beautiful way to honor him and stuff like that. And to celebrate all things Pantera and what they achieved. ‘Cause they changed the game, as far as extreme metal goes. I mean, they’re the kings of it. But it’s up to the fellows. Then it would just be me woodsheddin’ 25-8, learning all of Dime’s parts, you know what I mean?! Yeah, but like I said, as far as I’m concerned, it would just be honoring Dime.”

Meanwhile, Black Label Society have finally begun work on the follow-up to 2010′s awesome Order Of The Black, with Zakk confirming that the riffs are now officially a-flowin’.

“It’ll have all the heavy riffs and other stuff everyone knows and loves,” Wylde promises Billboard. “Order Of The Black was already three years ago, which is pretty insane. But the whole time we’ve been working, touring and stuff like that; it’s not like we’ve been sitting around the house. It’s crazy because back in the beginning of Black Label we were pumping out an album a year and constantly touring. But don’t mind doing it this way, either.”

BLS are set to release Unblackened, a special collection of live acoustic re-imaginings and a couple of covers, this week. The opus includes an awesome acoustic cover of Bill Withers classic Ain’t No Sunshine, complete with bonkers video:

According to The Pulse Of Radio, SKILLET has always made music a family affair, with frontman John Cooper and his wife, keyboardist Korey Cooper, bringing their kids on the road for several years now. But the Coopers expanded on that recently by including both their son and daughter on their latest album, “Rise”. John Cooper told Loudwire how that came out, explaining, “We were putting together these interludes, because we wanted to tell a story, and I thought the songs went really well together. I was trying to figure out what to do between these songs. In my house we have a workout/studio room. I was on the treadmill and my wife and daughter walked in. My daughter was holding a microphone. I asked what they were doing, and my wife said she had an idea. It turned out really, really well. It was something we weren’t planning on.”

Asked how his daughter felt hearing herself on the record, Cooper said, “She thinks it’s really cool. Of course that meant we had to get my son in there somewhere, too, because he was really excited.”

Cooper told The Pulse Of Radio that he enjoys seeing SKILLET fans now bringing their kids to the band’s shows. “It’s very cool to go to a concert and just see a dad with his 12-year-old son, and they’re both rocking out to SKILLET because their dad bought our first record when he was in high school or whatever,” he said. “You go to a BON JOVI show or a NICKELBACK show, AEROSMITH, that’s what you see — you see generations of fans. And SKILLET is still, you know, quite young, but we have those generations. I think that that’s really awesome.”

“Rise”, SKILLET‘s ninth studio album, is also the group’s first concept record. It debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard album chart back in June and features the singles “Sick Of It” and “Not Gonna Die”.

SKILLET is currently on the Carnival Of Madness tour with SHINEDOWN and other acts, with the trek stopping in Morrison, Colorado on Tuesday (September 10) and winding down in Puyallup, Washington on September 18.

The quartet will then head out on a month-long European tour as openers for NICKELBACK beginning in late October, with Russian dates penciled in for December.
