Session conducted an interview with former NEVERMORE and current CONQUERING DYSTOPIA guitarist Jeff Loomis at this year’s Musikmesse fair, which was held March 12-15 in Frankfurt, Germany. You can now watch the chat below.

Loomis redesigned his main Schecter signature signature-series JL-7 black seven-string electric guitar for 2014. It includes increased access and playability, lighter weight, thinner neck, Hipshot hardtail and new tones from the EMG 57/66 set.

CONQUERING DYSTOPIA is the project featuring Jeff Loomis and Portland, Oregon studio musician Keith Merrow. The group’s self-titled debut album was mixed at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with Mark Lewis (ARSIS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER, DEICIDE, SIX FEET UNDER).

The recording lineup for “Conquering Dystopia” is completed by Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE) on bass and Alex Rudinger (THE FACELESS) on drums.

Loomis previously contributed a guest guitar solo to Keith‘s second full-length instrumental album, “Awaken The Stone King”, which came out in January 2011.

The special tour edition of Loomis‘ latest album, “Plains Of Oblivion”, was released on April 16, 2013 via Century Media Records.

“Plains Of Oblivion – Tour Edition” features three bonus tracks, in addition to the original “Plains Of Oblivion” disc that was released in 2012.

Loomis‘s second solo album, “Plains Of Oblivion”, sold 2,900 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 179 on The Billboard 200 chart. The effort landed at No. 2 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

“Plains Of Oblivion” was released on April 10, 2012 in North America (one day earlier in Europe) via Century Media Records. The CD was produced by Aaron Smith (7 HORNS 7 EYES) and features cover artwork by Colin Marks of Rain Song Design, who has previously worked with ALL SHALL PERISH, THE END and XERATH.

Loomis and drummer Van Williams announced their departure from NEVERMORE in April 2011 due to personal differences with singer Warrel Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard. Their replacements have not yet been announced.

Spirit Of Metal recently conducted an interview with guitarist Ted Aguilar of San Francisco Bay Area metallers DEATH ANGEL. You can now watch the chat below.

DEATH ANGEL‘s seventh album, “The Dream Calls For Blood”, sold 5,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 72 on The Billboard 200 chart.

DEATH ANGEL‘s previous CD, “Relentless Retribution”, opened with 2,700 units in September 2010. The band’s 2008 effort, “Killing Season”, registered a first-week tally of around 2,300. This number was in line with the performance of its predecessor, “The Art of Dying”, which premiered with around 2,100 copies back in May 2004.

Released on October 11, 2013 in Europe (except for the U.K. where it arrived three days later) and October 15, 2013 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records, “The Dream Calls For Blood” was recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER), and once again features cover art by Brent Elliot White (JOB FOR A COWBOY, CARNIFEX, WHITECHAPEL).

Asked how DEATH ANGEL was able to construct such fast, aggressive, brutal material for “The Dream Calls For Blood” while many of the band’s contemporaries have, to varying degrees, abandoned thrash and speed metal, DEATH ANGEL singer Mark Osegueda told Metal Blast: “I think with us we kind of went the opposite direction. We got all of the experimentation out while we were young back in the ’80s; we tried to push the envelope then and maybe pushed it a little too much. When we reformed in 2001, we were writing new material, sort of fishing a bit, not knowing which direction things would go in. Over time, we started getting on the same page a lot more. Then we lost a couple of the original members, which in turn brought us two younger players who were very hungry to play, very eager to tour, and were also much more thrash-based players. Will [Carroll] is a much more thrash-styled drummer than Andy [Galeon, former drummer], who was a much more groove-based, almost ’70s rock kind of drummer. Dennis [Pepa, former bass player] was a much more punk-derived player than Damien [Sisson] is. When Rob [Cavestany] was coming up with the riffs for the new record, he was definitely playing off those strengths. So all of that lead to us going back to our thrash roots and coming up with some of the strongest material we’ve written to date.”

Southern California juggernauts IMPENDING DOOM will release their new album, “Death Will Reign”, on November 5 via eOne Music. Recorded, produced and mixed by Will Putney at The Machine Shop (SUICIDE SILENCE, LAMB OF GOD), this is the band’s most ferocious material to date.

IMPENDING DOOM have never sounded uglier and more desperate than on ‘Death Will Reign’,” says Alternative Press.

IMPENDING DOOM has crafted a stunning, deliberate and unrelenting collection with a sense of purpose, drive and continuity. “Death Will Reign” is the culmination of all that has come before, mining the bleak darkness and “scare” factor of last year’s “Baptized in Filth” and the dynamic fury of “There Will Be Violence” and “The Serpent Servant”. All of those elements are injected with the return of the gritty rawness found within the unpolished grind of “Nailed. Dead. Risen”, IMPENDING DOOM‘s squealing cult-classic debut that introduced the world to their unique combination of reverent worship and sick gore-core, dubbed Goreship.

“We wanted this album to sound very natural and unpolished,” explains IMPENDING DOOM‘s longtime bassist David Sittig, a part of the lineup since before the first album’s release. “There’s no crazy digital stuff. There are no fake drums. We wanted it to have the feel of our first album with the songwriting from the last one. We’ve gotten better at song structures and so forth over the years, but we wanted to recapture that old-school vibe, too.”

IMPENDING DOOM‘s fourth full-length album, “Baptized In Filth”, sold 4,600 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 106 on The Billboard 200 chart. Released on March 13, 2012, the CD was produced by Andreas Magnusson (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, THE FAMINE) and was mixed by Machine, who has previously worked with LAMB OF GOD, SUICIDE SILENCE and DEMON HUNTER, among others.

* The Making Of “The Dream Calls For Blood”

In a recent interview with Metal Covenant, DEATH ANGEL guitarist Rob Cavestany stated about the “The Dream Calls For Blood” album title: “The title is basically our motto. It’s what we’re talking about, you know. In our point of view the dream being our band and keeping the band going and making music for your life. The blood is all the sacrifice and all hard work that goes into it and that’s the metaphor for that. It’s not only meant for music. It’s also meant for other people to relate in their own life and goals that they’re trying to achieve and the sacrifices that it takes to achieve these goals. And along with that, there’s also a tinge of aggression in there about other people that cut corners and don’t quite go through all the steps it takes to achieve the goal the right way. So there’s a little bit of a middle finger to those people that go about it that way and don’t fully respect what it takes.”

DEATH ANGEL‘s North American headlining tour in support of “The Dream Calls For Blood” will kick off on October 18 in San Francisco. Support on the trek will come from 3 INCHES OF BLOOD, BATTLECROSS, REVOCATION and DIAMOND PLATE.

“We are so excited to announce this upcoming tour,” commented DEATH ANGEL vocalist Mark Osegueda.

“We worked so hard writing, and recording this record! Especially writing this while on the road for the last three years of touring. And it reflects the triumphs, and mainly hardships, of all we went through while touring. The anger, perseverance, and energy was captured on the recording of ‘The Dream Calls For Blood’.

“This tour is the PERFECT springboard to launch off of and back on the road; hungrier and more focused then ever! With a lineup of bands handpicked by us, you’re basically sonically ravaged from the moment the lights dim at the beginning of the night until the lights turn back on at the end! I’m confident every band on this bill plan on sending you home feeling like you’ve survived a massacre that you can’t help but brag about.

“Look forward to feeding off each other’s energy!

“Stay hungry! Stay thrash! See you on the road, in the pit, and at the bar!!!”

The San Francisco, Hollywood and Ramona gigs are considered CD-release shows and everyone that purchases a ticket will also receive a copy of the new DEATH ANGEL album at the show.

Caleb Smith of “The Sick Room” radio in New Zealand recently conducted an interview with vocalist Dez Fafara of Californian metallers DEVILDRIVER. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

DEVILDRIVER‘s sixth album, “Winter Kills”, sold around 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 32 on The Billboard 200 chart. This figure is in line with the opening number of DEVILDRIVER‘s fifth CD, “Beast”, which also shifted 11,000 units back in February 2011 to land at No. 42.

The instrumental parts for “Winter Kills” were recorded at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida while the vocals were laid down at Dez Fafara‘s home studio, with Mark Lewis (THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, ALL THAT REMAINS) handling production duties. The album’s cover artwork features a photograph by Dean Karr. The layout was done by Ryan Clark of Invisible Creature.

“Winter Kills” was made available in four configurations, including a deluxe digibook with CD (including two bonus tracks, “Shudder” and “Back Down To The Grave”) and live DVD (featuring 45 minutes of live raw DEVILDRIVER power — no studio overdubs at all, just the band at their best — and including fan favorites “Clouds Over California” and “The Wretched”), standard CD version, digital version and, for the first time in DEVILDRIVER history, a 2LP gatefold edition.

On August 24, Jason Saulnier of the MusicLegends.ca web site conducted an interview with bassist/vocalist Glen Benton of Florida death metal veterans DEICIDE in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.

DEICIDE will release its new album, “In The Minds Of Evil”, on November 25 via Century Media Records. The CD was recorded at AudioHammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, AUGUST BURNS RED, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, ALL THAT REMAINS, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER).

“In The Minds Of Evil” track listing:

01. In The Minds Of Evil
02. Thou Begone
03. Godkill
04. Beyond Salvation
05. Misery Of One
06. Between The Flesh And The Void
07. Even The Gods Can Bleed
08. Trample The Cross
09. Banished By Evil
10. Kill The Light Of Christ
11. End The Wrath Of God

The cover artwork (see below) was taken from Australian artist Simon Cowell‘s painting Power Of The Mind, and offers a fitting face to the album’s 11 tracks.

DEICIDE drummer Steve Asheim recently told Decibel magazine about the band’s working relationship with Suecof: “It’s awesome! I’ve known Jason since ’08. I had been going out to do the ORDER OF ENNEAD records with him. The last DEICIDE record we did with Mark [Lewis], but I’ve known Jason a long time, so I asked him if he was into it. He said, ‘Absolutely!’ I wanted to get one done ovith him before something happens. You never know.”

Regarding the lyrical themes covered on the new DEICIDE album, Asheim said: “[The lyrics] are typical Glen Benton. Blasphemous, brutal rhetoric. We’re going to get down and dirty this Blasphemous, brutal rhetoric. We’re going to get down and dirty this time around, so expect the lyrics to be brutal.”

According to Asheim, longtime fans will pick up on nuances inspired by the almighty “Legion” effort. “Jason wanted to capture the ‘Legion’ feel,” the drummer said. “We’re wanting Glen‘s vocals to sound more old-school. So, it’s a bit of the new with a little throwback action.”

As for DEICIDE‘s time at Audiohammer, Asheim said: “It’s pretty cut-and-dried these days. I’ve known Jason a few years. I kind of know his methodology, how he works. It’s a far drive, so we’ll spend two or three nights there. Once we knock it out, we’ll end up partying. We repeat that the next day.”

“To Hell With God” sold 2,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release.

DEICIDE‘s previous CD, “Till Death Do Us Part”, opened with 2,900 copies back in May 2008.
