Trivium: levelling the UK since 2005

There’s always something special about Trivium coming back to the UK. Ever since they first broke on our shores and played that Download set in 2005, Florida’s modern metal heavyweights have treated us as their home away from home, always looking as happy on a stage as the rest of us are in front of it and, pretty much without exception, obliterating whichever venue they turn up at.

Unfortunately, what is an extremely stacked and promising-looking bill takes a serious knock when Trivium frontman Matt Heafy arrives on stage early on to announce that German metalcore crew Caliban are unable to play tonight due to the van carrying their equipment breaking down and not turning up on time. There’s an audible and very loud groan as Caliban singer Andreas Dörner turns up to confirm the bad news, but luckily, the band who are tasked with picking the vibe back up happen to be one of the best live metal bands in the world right now.

Upon A Burning Body: getting the party started

There are no words to describe just how good Upon A Burning Body are tonight. The Texan deathcore ragers turn up looking like they’ve just walked off the set of Goodfellas, suited and booted and launching straight into a set that is so crushingly heavy and full of groove that every single head in the entire Empire is left bobbing so hard it’s a wonder they don’t all come spinning off by the hinges. Do necks have hinges? Probably not. Whatever, we’re overexcited.

The band are ludicrously tight, stopping a couple of times mid-song to demand more participation from the few people who aren’t already jumping around like wallies with rabies (demands that are eagerly met, FYI) and demonstrating that the likes of Texas Blood Money and an atrociously huge-sounding Intermission can fill venues this size with reckless ease. The fact that it’s later revealed that they’re having to borrow instruments and equipment from other bands on the bill due to the van breakdown only enforces just how good they are, and as extra security are hurriedly ushered in to deal with the waves of crowdsurfers that explode over the Texans’ final song, it’s hard to argue that Upon A Burning Body aren’t the band of the night. Next time they hit our shores, do not fucking miss them.

As I Lay Dying have a pretty heavy job following that up, but they have the chops and, judging by the reaction that greets them as they stroll out and launch into Condemned, enough fans here to pull it off spectacularly. Their well-worn brand of bouncy, neatly polished metalcore has never been groundbreaking, but it was made for venues this size, with some huge and pretty gnarly-looking pits opening up all over the place and frontman Tim Lambesis’ imposing frame giving the band a hell of a stage presence.
