Karl Simon, vocalist/guitarist for for Indianapolis doomsters THE GATES OF SLUMBER, has posted the following message on the Hellride Music forums:

“Some of you may have noticed that Jason [McCash, bass] quit THE GATES OF SLUMBER this past week.

“So, yeah. it’s done.

“I always said I’d never go on doing THE GATES OF SLUMBER without Jason. I don’t think anyone ever really believed it, but yeah, it’s done. I did start the band, but McCash has been my best friend for the last 20 years, the last 10 in this damn band. He wrote amazing music and was a killer person to be around on the road.

“Somewhere about three years back, shit started to change, and it’s ended with him quitting. I’m sure he needs the break, probably from me… I’m starting to *kind of* get the hint.

“So yeah. It’s done.”

THE GATES OF SLUMBER‘s “Death March” video can be seen below. The song comes off the band’s “Stormcrow” EP, which was released on January 29 via Scion Audio/Visual, (a.k.a. Scion A/V), the in-house record label and lifestyle marketing division of the Scion marque produced by Toyota Motor Corporation for the North American market. The CD was recorded by Sanford Parker and it features cover artwork by Dave Quiggle.

THE GATES OF SLUMBER last year parted amicably with drummer J. Clyde Paradis, who recorded and toured behind the 2011 album “The Wretch” (Rise Above Records).

THE GATES OF SLUMBER started in 1998 as a backlash against the stoner rock trend prevalent at the time and with their mixture of BLACK SABBATH, SAINT VITUS, PENTAGRAM, and prime-era CELTIC FROST, the band has crushed or converted unbelievers ever since.

“The Wretch” was released in May 2011 via Rise Above/Metal Blade. The CD was recorded at England’s Orgone Studios with producer Jaime Gomez Arellano (GHOST, ANGEL WITCH).

Jason McCash, bassist, co-songwriter and co-lyricist for Indianapolis doomsters THE GATES OF SLUMBER, has announced his departure from the band. He says: “It’s nothing at all against Karl [Simon; vocals, guitar] and Bob [Fouts; drums] but I think it’s something I have to do at this time. I really hope and wish the best for them and the group.

“I am not done with music, though I’m leaving THE GATES OF SLUMBER, as I have a whole album’s worth of material written that was suppose to be part of the next THE GATES OF SLUMBER album that I very much want to see come to life. The material that I have are still in the the same vein as in songs like ‘Death March’, ‘Dragon Caravan’ and ‘Day Of Farewell’. I plan on still bringing these songs to life, but it just wont be under the THE GATES OF SLUMBER banner.

“I’ve spent a massive portion of my life in this band. Living it, cultivating it, breathing it and loving every moment in it. I will miss it and I do look back on what I’ve helped create with a very proud heart.

“I am sorry for this to happen but it is just time for me to leave. ”

Lawvere had done stunning illustrations for numerous albums and is best known for a slew of thrash metal offerings released on Noise Records.

Filmmakers Bruno Amstutz and Lukas Ruettimann have released a teaser for the upcoming documentary about the reunited Swiss metal band CORONER. Due next year, the film will feature interviews with Tom G. Warrior and Martin Ain (CELTIC FROST), Max Cavalera (SEPULTURA, SOULFLY), Franz Treichler (YOUNG GODS), Chris von Rohr (KROKUS), Chris Glanzmann (ELUVEITIE), Stephan Eicher and more.

Originally part of the road crew for fellow countrymen CELTIC FROST, CORONER went on to become one of the most progressive extreme metal acts of the Eighties.

The connection between the Zurich band and CELTIC FROST was so strong, in fact, that CELTIC FROST frontman Tom G. Warrior offered to handle vocals for the emerging band’s demo. Warrior and CORONER entered Switzerland’s Magnetix studio on October 10, 1985, and nine days later they walked out with the impressive four-song 1986 release, “Death Cult”.

While subsequent bootlegged CDs included the bonus tracks of “Arrogance in Uniform” and “Hate, Fire, Blood”, the original four-track demo consisted of the following tracks: “Spectators of Sin”, “Spiral Dream”, “Aerial Combat” and “The Invincible”. (Only “Spiral Dream” would make it onto CORONER‘s 1987 debut LP, “R.I.P.”)

According to The BNR Metal Pages, CORONER “progressed from the raw speed of ‘R.I.P.’ to the more laidback style of ‘Grin’, releasing five albums (not counting the semi-compilation ‘Coroner’ album) that are all different and yet all are undeniably related, and undeniably CORONER. The band called it a day in 1994, actually before the release of ‘Coroner’, with Marky Edelmann joining APOLLYON SUN and Tommy T. Baron going to KREATOR, though neither is still with those bands.”

Jeff Keller Management LLC, the management company for FLOTSAM AND JETSAM and HIRAX, has announced that due to circumstances beyond the bands’ and management’s control, the “Metal Apocalypse” European tour that was scheduled to feature both artists has been canceled.

Says Jeff Keller: “Unfortunately, it was in both bands’ best interest to not continue with the tour at this time. We apologize to the fans for this unfortunate circumstance, and I can assure the fans that both bands will be in Europe in 2014 for other touring and festival appearances.”

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM recently returned to Metal Blade Records to release their new album, “Ugly Noise”.

“Ugly Noise” is FLOTSAM AND JETSAM‘s eleventh full-length album, their first release on Metal Blade since 2001, and the follow-up to their 2010 album “The Cold”. The record also heralds the return of original members Michael Gilbert on guitar and Kelly David Smith, who hadn’t recorded with FLOTSAM AND JETSAM since “High” in 1997.

Funding for the new FLOTSAM AND JETSAM album was aided by the PledgeMusic.com project, which encourages fans to contribute funds to the recording of albums and the artists themselves to donate to charity as a part of their fundraising.

HIRAX will release its new album, “Immortal Legacy”, on October 22 (six days later in Europe) via SPV/Steamhammer. It will be made available as a CD, gatefold colored LP and a digital download.

Tom G. Warrior (Hellhammer, Celtic Frost) is seems pretty stoked about the new Triptykon record. Too bad we'll have to wait until 2014 to hear it. Triptykon are one of those bands that you don't ever hear much about, but when you do it's always some pretty good stuff. Which makes sense given how good …
