The governor of Jakarta, Indonesia, Joko Widodo, attended the band’s August 25 concert in the city — 25 years to the day after the release of the band’s fourth album, “…And Justice For All”, and more than 20 years after their tumultuous first show in Indonesia.

“I am happy and satisfied with the concert,” Widodo said after the show. “No one got out of control last night. We showed them that Jakarta citizens are all dignified. We could rock the night away in an orderly fashion.”

60,000 Indonesian metal fans attended Sunday’s concert, where more than 2,000 security personnel were deployed.

METALLICA‘s last show in Indonesia took place in 1993 — at the peak of the band’s commercial popularity while they were on the road supporting the mega-selling “black” album. One of the biggest shows that Indonesia had ever hosted, it ended with a riot that saw angry fans — many of whom were trying to get into the concert for free — burning cars and destroying public property, as well as sustaining countless physical injuries while fighting with the police.

Back in May, Widodo had to turn over his autographed METALLICA bass guitar to the government temporarily, while authorities determined whether the instrument was merely a gift or a violation of ethics rules. Widodo received the bass from METALLICA bassist Robert Trujillo, but had to give it up to the state within 30 days, according to laws regarding gifts to state officials.

Pussy Riot have been found guilty

Today has seen the controversial trial of Russian political punk band Pussy Riot, who were arrested for performing an anti-Putin protest song in a cathedral in Moscow back in March.

After a delayed verdict, they have just been found guilty of hooliganism “motivated by religious hatred and emnity”. Beyond the initial guilty verdict here’s what the court has said so far:

“The Pussy Riot singers colluded under unestablished circumstances, for the purpose of offensively violating public peace in a sign of flagrant disrespect for citizens.

The women were motivated by religious enmity and hatred, and acted provocatively and in an insulting manner inside a religious building in the presence of a large number of believers.”

At this point the judge is still summing up the case. Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alekhina and Ekaterina Samutsevich are all facing three years in prison.

Amnesty International have created a petition addressed to the Russian prosecutors which you can sign here – Tell Russia To Drop All Charges And Release Pussy Riot!
