DEEP SWELL, the Shepherdstown, West Virginia-based band featuring CLUTCH guitarist Tim Sult, will release its debut album, “Lore Of The Angler”, on on October 15 via CLUTCH‘s record label, Weathermaker Music.

With a powerful female lead vocalist and precise rhythmic force, DEEP SWELL‘s sound is a mix of riff-based rock, funk-tinged psychedelia and mysterious poetic lyrics.

Years of friendship and mutual appreciation for each other’s talents brought Sult into collaboration with drummer Jesse Shultzaberger and bassist Logan Kilmer. Shultzaberger is a versatile drummer who currently tours with the Americana band THE WOODSHEDDERS. Kilmer, who honed his technique and methods with NOETIC PULL, plays five-string with a smooth funky bass style to the depth of which helped spawn the band’s name.

At the beginning of 2012 they met Briena Pearl and invited her to join the trio. Pearl, a lifelong student of voice, theater, and dance, quickly proved the sheer force of her talent as a singer and songwriter, thus establishing an instant chemistry with the band and a clear direction for their emerging sound. With this final addition in place DEEP SWELL‘s dynamic sound was forged.

Sult commented on being a part of DEEP SWELL and the new release: “I’m very excited about working with another group of talented artists and I’m looking forward to introducing the new project to the world.”

In February 2013, DEEP SWELL recorded “Lore Of The Angler” at Magpie Cage Recording Studio in Baltimore, Maryland. Three months later, they were signed to Weathermaker Music, with the label overseeing distribution, touring and publicity for the album starting this fall.

DEEP SWELL has scheduled a handful of dates in supporting of “Lore Of The Angler”, including a CD-release party on October 19 in Shepherdstown at Opera House Live. Following that show, the band will out through October 23, with LIONIZE providing support.

Maryland rockers CLUTCH have been forced to postpone the September tour dates of the “Earth Rocker” North American tour so that singer Neil Fallon can undergo surgery for cervical spinal stenosis and two herniated discs. Most of the shows will be rescheduled. Support on the rescheduled concerts will still come from THE SWORD and CROBOT.

Tickets that were already purchased for the dates in September will be honored for the rescheduled dates in January.

Unfortunately, one of the shows could not be rescheduled and has been canceled. This is show is Vienna, West Virginia on September 21.

The shows scheduled for South Burlington, Vermont on September 24 and Long Island, New York on September 27 will be rescheduled for a later date; please hold on to your tickets. Refunds for the West Virginia are available at point of purchase.

The band will still be playing The Shindig festival on September 14 in Baltimore, Maryland. All dates on the October – November leg of the tour will go on as scheduled and planned. The Hampton Beach, New Hampshire date originally in September is now scheduled for October 25.

Unfortunately, THE SWORD and CROBOT will not be appearing on this new date in Hampton Beach, NH. News about support will be released in the coming weeks.

CLUTCH frontman Neil Fallon gave the following update on his condition: “Dear friends, this week I’ve learned that a childhood injury to the neck, a genetic predisposition for spinal disease, and 20 some years of headbanging will exact a toll. I’ve been diagnosed with an ugly case of cervical spinal stenosis and two herniated discs.

“In some instances, these conditions can be treated non-surgically. This is not the case for me. I have been advised by several neurosurgeons that my spinal cord has already been damaged and that I risk further damage were I not to address the situation. For this reason, I’ve decided to take care of this [as soon as possible].

“Believe me, rescheduling a tour turns my stomach, but I believe this is the wisest choice given the prognosis.

“On Tuesday, I will undergo surgery. The procedure will fuse three vertebrae together with a small titanium plate.

“I have faith that this surgery will go as well as it can, and that I will be back in the saddle for our October-November tour.

“On behalf of my spine, deepest apologies to those who had been looking forward to seeing CLUTCH over the next two weeks. We’ll make it up to you.”

The Rock Pit recently conducted an interview with Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, CAVALERA CONSPIRACY, SEPULTURA). A couple of excerps from the chat follow below.

The Rock Pit: I wanted to get straight into [SOULFLY‘s] upcoming album, “Savages”. I have been listening to a preview of it and I must say this sounds like a really big album for SOULFLY. It has a lot of the elements from previous albums. Tell us a bit about the idea behind this album.

Max: “Savages” is definitely a surprising album for us in that it’s the ninth album for SOULFLY and the first album with Terry Date producing the album. He’s a great producer. It’s the first album that my son plays drums on it. Zyon did a great job and we have some real nice guests like Neil [Fallon] from CLUTCH, Jamie [Hanks] from I DECLARE WAR and Mitch [Harris] from NAPALM DEATH are on the record. I really like the record. I think half of it is extreme like “Enslaved” was and the other half is really super groovy like early SOULFLY stuff like “Prophecy” and “Soulfly 1”. Stuff like “Bloodshed” and “Masters Of Savagery” and “Spiral” are killer groove songs, so I think it’s a great combination of this extreme and groove together which makes “Savages” a very powerful record.

The Rock Pit: Terry Date, who you have worked with before, you decided to work with him again; this time he produced the album. Why did you decide to work with him?

Max: Yeah, I worked with him on “Around The Fur”, the DEFTONES album from 1997, I believe, and I met Terry at that time and became good friends with him. He used to come to SOULFLY and sing “Policia” all the time and he mixed two of my other records, “Dark Ages” and “Conquer”, I believe, and we kept the friendship going through the years. I always said, “One day I’m going to record a whole record with you and you are going to produce.” When the time came for this one, I called him up and said, “Are you ready to do this, man?” and he was ready, and it was the best choice possible because I love the sound of the record. I think Terry did an amazing job on the sound. The drums sound fantastic, the guitars sound fantastic and it was such a pleasure working with Terry. He’s such a good guy, such a mellow guy in the studio, that made everyone at ease and gave everyone good confidence to make the best record possible. So I love working with Terry. I would definitely work with him again in the future.

The Rock Pit: One of the things that I have noticed with SOULFLY over the years is that each album is different, especially after [guitarist] Marc Rizzo joined the band. How much of an impact has he had with the changes over the years?

Max: Yeah, Marc is a big part of it. He’s been with us since 2004 and he’s a really killer guitar player. He adds his own real guitar accent and, of course, shredding, because he’s an amazing shredder. He’s just a great guy, but I think part of the motivation of SOULFLY going forward comes with the idea that Marc‘s in the band and we do a lot of things together. A lot of times I will do a riff and Marc will grab my riff and make it better, like update my riff. Make it a little cooler, a little more exciting, and that’s a great way to work when you can do it like that with a guy in the band who can do that. We have a system that really works and he loves being in SOULFLY; he’s one guy I don’t want to change in the band. That’s why he’s been with us since 2004 and I don’t think we are going to change for a long time. I hope he stays with me for a long time, because I think we have some kind of magic together that’s really killer. I love the fact that he’s in the band and that he does so much for SOULFLY.

“Crucial Velocity”, the new Aisha Tyler-directed video from Maryland rockers CLUTCH, can be seen below. The song comes off the band’s latest album, “Earth Rocker”, which sold 22,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at position No. 15 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Released via CLUTCH‘s own Weathermaker Music label, “Earth Rocker” entered the German Media Control chart at No. 71. In the U.K., the CD landed at No. 50 on the regular chart, No. 3 on the Rock/Metal Albums chart and No. 11 on the Independent Albums chart.

Produced by Machine (LAMB OF GOD, FOUR YEAR STRONG, FALL OUT BOY) at the Machine Shop studio in Belleville, New Jersey, “Earth Rocker” was described by CLUTCH vocalist Neil Fallon in a recent interview with DCHeavyMetal.com as “probably faster than most of our recent albums. Maybe compared to some other bands, it’s not the fastest thing on planet Earth. For us it was definitely a step up in the tempo. And I think the other thing that kind of stands out about this one is the blues influences that we’ve been flirting with over the past couple records is more or less absent in this record, which didn’t really happen intentionally until we looked back at it. As a whole, it’s just much more of a straight-up rock and roll record.”

The artwork for “Earth Rocker” was created by Nick Lakiotes, longtime CLUTCH art director, who has worked on previous efforts, including “Robot Hive/Exodus” and “Strange Cousins From The West”.

Mutoid Man, featuring members of Converge and Cave In, sounds exactly like what you'd hope a super heavy (and fast) version of Clutch would sound like; awesome. I wasn't kidding about the Clutch comparison. Mutoid Man is duo consisting of Cave In vocalist and guitarist Steve Brodsky and Converge drummer Ben Koller, though I'd have to …
