After a mediocre August, there were a ton of great metal releases in September. There were a few outstanding releases that aren’t on our top five list because the competition was so stiff. Topping the list is a comeback album from a legendary group. With the departure of a couple members and the amount of time that passed since their last album, there were some concerns on what Carcass’ new album might bring. Those concerns were unfounded, as they delivered a spectacular release. Check out our list of the best metal albums released in September.

Soundgarden: returning legends

Something tells us that Soundgarden have been watching a bit of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Check out their new video for Halfway There to see what we’re banging on about.

Halfway There is lifted from the grunge icons’ pretty damn swell comeback album, King Animal, out now.

“I think that will be it for a while,” comments guitarist Kim Thayill on the band’s immediate plans. “I’ll be working on compiling the Soundgarden B-Sides box. We have a lot of songs that were released on European and Australian releases, movie soundtracks – various things like that, that have yet to be compiled into album form.”

Meanwhile, you can catch Soundgarden on the following dates this month:

Sep 13: Manchester O2 Apollo
Sep 14: Birmingham Academy
Sep 16: Dublin O2
Sep 18: London O2 Academy Brixton

The reformed CHASTAIN — featuring Leather Leone on vocals — has set “Surrender To No One” as the title of its comeback album, tentatively due in early 2014 via an as-yet-undetermined record label.

“Surrender To No One” track listing:

01. Surrender To No One
02. Fear My Wrath
03. I Am Sin
04. Stand And Fight
05. Freedom Within
06. Bleed Through Me
07. Call Of The Wild
08. Evil Awaits Us
09. Save Me Tonight
10. Deep Down In The Darkness
11. Rise Up

Guitarist David T. Chastain and Leather Leone have been writing material since January. Also back in the saddle is original bassist Mike Skimmerhorn. The drum tracks for the CD were recorded by Stian Kristoffersen (PAGAN’S MIND, FIREWIND) since original drummer Fred Coury is still busy touring with CINDERELLA and other projects.

The Leather-fronted version of CHASTAIN recorded five CDs in the mid-to-late 1980s: 1985’s “Mystery Of Illusion”, 1986’s “Ruler Of The Wasteland”, 1987’s “The 7th Of Never”, 1988’s “The Voice Of The Cult” and 1990’s “For Those Who Dare”. After the “For Those Who Dare” tour, David and Leather amicably went their separate ways but kept in touch over the years.

Leather last year released the debut album from her SLEDGE LEATHER project, “Imagine Me Alive”. The CD was inspired in 2010 when Leather called Sandy Sledge to collaborate on the Ronnie James Dio track “Egypt” for a demo tribute recording. Due to the overwhelming response for more material, SLEDGE LEATHER was born and was confirmed for Germany’s Keep It True festival in April 2011.

Regarding the new CHASTAIN material, David states: “We are trying to write and record music that is expected of us but with some modern twists and turns. We demoed up 20 tracks and it was difficult to leave any of them off the CD. Stian did an amazing job with the drum tracks and his performance is probably the best drumming on any CHASTAIN release to date. We have been in no rush as we wanted to make sure everything would live up to our past releases, but at this point we are in the home stretch.”

Leviathan Records in 2010 released “The Reign of Leather”, a collection of CHASTAIN tracks Leather had a hand in writing during her glory days with the band. Leviathan also reissued two of the classic CHASTAIN CDs with Leather: “The 7th of Never” and “The Voice Of The Cult”. Both were digitally remastered and are in their original unedited versions.

Southern German gothic metallers CREMATORY have inked a deal with Steamhammer/SPV. The band’s new album, “Antiserum”, will be released on February 25, 2014 (one day earlier internationally).

“We’re really looking forward to our collaboration with Steamhammer/SPV, a globally renowned label and expert partner in what we’re planning for the future,” says CREMATORY drummer Markus Jüllich.

“Our fans can look forward to ‘Antiserum’, on which we have gone one step further than we did on our comeback album, ‘Revolution’, in terms of our electronic influences. In collaboration with Elmar Schmidt of Hamburg EBM act CENTHRON, we have come up with a haunting mix of metal riffs and EBM keyboards. That’s why I’d refer to ‘Antiserum’‘s musical direction as ‘EBM metal.'”

The first single from “Antiserum”, a song called “Shadowmaker”, will be released on November 22. Jüllich says: “Even before the whole record was finalized, we knew that ‘Shadowmaker’ had absolute hit potential. You’d be hard put to announce our new album better than with this song.”

On the day of the single launch, a special box set featuring CREMATORY‘s first ten studio albums in a cardboard sleeve will be made available. It is described in a press release as “an absolute must-have for all fans and collectors.”

Says Steamhammer A&R manager Olly Hahn: “I am delighted that CREMATORY have opted for SPV. They’re one of the leading bands in the gothic metal genre, and their latest album, ‘Antiserum’, impresses with its homogeneity and hit potential!”

Tony Iommi on BBC HARDtalk in June

Tony Iommi has offered further insight into his current health status and whether we’re likely to see a follow-up to this year’s awesome Black Sabbath comeback album, 13.

“It all depends on my health, really,” he muses. “But I don’t think it would be hard to do another album, because we work so well together once we start cracking. And I’ve got plenty of ideas and stuff. But we’ll have to see what happens at the end of the year, after tour. I mean, for me, this is a whole new venture, because it’s the first time I’ve been out on tour since I’ve been ill for the last two years. And I have to treat things very differently to how I did five years ago. I’ve always put the band first, but now, of course, I have to put my health first.

“Ronnie [James Dio, who fronted Black Sabbath on its 2009 tour and died in 2010] was getting stomach pains, and he was telling me before we were going onstage some nights, ‘Oh, my stomach’s really playing up,’ and he’d ask me if I’ve got any Tums or anything. And I said, ‘You should get it checked, you know, Ronnie.’ Of course, he did, but it was too late. And that’s the problem. It’s easy to overlook these things. I mean, I’m probably more over the top than I ever have been now. I check everything every day. You just don’t know. A lump pops up and you’ve gotta get it sorted.”
