On March 17, GetYourRockOut conducted an interview with vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth of New Jersey thrash metal veterans OVERKILL in Manchester, England. You can now watch the chat below.

OVERKILL will release its new album, “White Devil Armory”, in July in North America via eOne Music and in Europe through Nuclear Blast Records. The effort was tracked at Gear Recording and will be mixed by Greg Reely, who also worked on 2012′s “The Electric Age”.

“White Devil Armory” track listing:

01. Freedom Rings
02. Where There’s Smoke…
03. Pig
04. Amorist
05. Down To The Bone
06. Bitter Pill
07. King Of The Rat Bastards
08. Another Day To Die
09. It’s All Yours
10. In The Name

The cover artwork for “White Devil Armory” can be seen below.

Said OVERKILL in a statement: “We are still working on the new record, but this is gonna be worth the wait, with more old-school, face-melting thrash!”

Speaking to Steppin’ Out magazine, OVERKILL vocalist Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth stated about the band’s upcoming album: “The new record has a blend of what we’ve done over the past half decade. I’m noticing it’s a more punchy heavy metal record with more dimension than the last record had. Where is it going to end up on the food chain? I really don’t know. But my feeling is it’s an eclectic collection of moments from us. ‘The Electric Age’ came across, to me, as kind of a two-dimensional thrash record. This one is punchy but has a whole different bunch of ways to go and things to hear on it.”

OVERKILL released a very special limited tour edition of “The Electric Age” in Europe on April 19, 2013 via Nuclear Blast Records. The limited 2CD tour edition included the regular album as well as a four additional live tracks on a bonus CD, recorded at The Metro in Sidney, Australia on September 25, 2010.

“The Electric Age” sold 6,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 77 on The Billboard 200 chart.

Part two of a track-by-track breakdown of “Pariah’s Child”, the eighth studio album from Finnish melodic metallers SONATA ARCTICA, can be seen below. The CD will be released on March 28 via Nuclear Blast. The cover artwork for the effort can be seen below.

“Pariah’s Child” track listing:

01. The Wolves Die Young
02. Running Lights
03. Take One Breath
04. Cloud Factory
05. Blood
06. What Did You Do In The War, Dad?
07. Half A Marathon Man
08. X Marks The Spot
09. Love
10. Larger Than Life

SONATA ARCTICA vocalist/keyboardist Tony Kakko stated about the song “Cloud Factory”, the lyric video for which can be seen below: “It has some kind of an ear-worm factor. It’s not a bad thing to have in a single. A story about how dad already sees his young son going to work in the same factory he still goes and where his dad and dad’s dad went before him, and how that pleasantly vicious circle never ends.”

“The Wolves Die Young” video can be seen below. The clip was filmed in January at Sibelius House in Lahti, Finland and was produced by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

Commented Tony Kakko: “There are some instant SONATA ‘greatest-hits’ songs there, which feels good.

“I think we reached the result we had in mind, each of us in our own field.

“We went on to create the next SONATA ARCTICA power metalesque album and I think we achieved it adequately.

“I have to say that I had drifted pretty far away from those ‘days of thunder,’ that speedy, happy-go-lucky attitude.

“I was happy to notice this style can still make me smile. It’s good. Music has to do that to me. It also shows the other older songs in a totally new light for me.

“I can now understand and appreciate why the fans enjoy what we did in the early days.”

Regarding the new CD title and cover artwork, Kakko said: “As always, it’s pretty hard coming up with a name for the new baby. I tried to approach it from many angles; how this is our eighth album and how easy it would be to abuse that fact. All the symbolism of figure eight, eternity and so on. But that just did not feel right, as it’s been done so many times. Then I started to think how we’d in ways abandoned our ‘totem animal,’ the wolf and all what comes with the territory.

“As the music on the album is bowing more towards the ‘old’ SONATA, meaning more power metal-style elements and wolves in many of the songs in one form or another, it was clear we need a wolf on the cover. An abandoned wolf. A pariah. Or pariah’s child, actually. The new generation to bring the old logo back.”

SONATA ARCTICA last August parted ways with bassist Marko Paasikoski and replaced him with Pasi Kauppinen (SILENT VOICES, ex-REQUIEM, WINTERBORN).

The band will launch a European headlining tour in support of “Pariah’s Child” on April 10 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

American metallers STEEL PROPHET will release their long-awaited new album, “Omniscient”, at the end of June / beginning of July on limited-edition digibook CD, standard CD, limited-edition double LP and digital formats via Cruz Del Sur Music. The effort’s spectacular artwork was specifically created for “Omniscient” by German artist Timo Würz and represents one of the central themes of the album: “The Tree of Knowledge.”

“Omniscient” is a concept album based on an original story written by lead guitarist and founding member Steve Kachinsky Blakmoor, and “The Tree of Knowledge” displayed on the cover represents a very important “character” in the plot.

Following Blackmoor‘s suggestions, Würz has also created 12 additional, original panels that will guide the listener through the whole story. Blackmoor says: “It was great to work with Timo. His sense of form, color and space are impeccable. He has great imagination, and his familiarity with the concepts we wanted to work with made it a perfect fit in bringing the story ideas to life.”

STEEL PROPHET needs no introduction to the heavy metal world: with a long history, the band is particularly known for the technical and versatile guitar work of founding member Steve Kachinsky Blakmoor. And let’s not forget the soaring vocals of Rick Mythiasin, who has returned to sing with STEEL PROPHET for the first time since 2002′s “Unseen” album.

“Omniscient” is a conceptual, science-fiction-themed album, with a heavy dose of unusual philosophies and ideas, that will appeal to all fans of STEEL PROPHET‘s early works, especially the “Dark Hallucinations” period. This new album will have a visually outstanding package that will read like a graphic novel to highlight the story that underlines the music.

Video footage of BLACK STONE CHERRY‘s recent acoustic performance in the studios of the U.K. digital radio station Planet Rock can be seen below.

BLACK STONE CHERRY will release its fourth album, “Magic Mountain”, on May 6 (one day earlier internationally) via Roadrunner Records. The cover artwork for the CD can be seen below.

The first single from “Magic Mountain”, “Me And Mary Jane”, hit radio waves last month to coincide with the band’s sold-out series of intimate “fan-curated” U.K. shows.

Commenting on the making of the Joe Barresi-produced “Magic Mountain”, BLACK STONE CHERRY said: “Not since before our first album have we felt the freedom and confidence that we felt while writing and recording this album.

“After touring the world behind three previous albums that we are extremely proud of, we feel this album best captures the live energy, honesty and vibe that encompasses our true musicianship.”

Renowned as electrifying live, BLACK STONE CHERRY hit the road hard in support of “Magic Mountain”, kicking off the album cycle in the U.K. with a series of intimate — and sold out — live performances dubbed “The Southern Hospitality Tour”. The dates saw BLACK STONE CHERRY creating each evening’s setlist from a list of fan requests, guaranteeing every night’s performance was completely unique. The boys also broke the lengthy set to answer fans questions during an audience question-and-answer session, marking the shows out as a really special evening.

BLACK STONE CHERRY‘s previous albums, 2008′s “Folklore And Superstition” and 2011′s “Between The Devil & The Deep Blue Sea”, both topped the U.K. Rock Albums chart on their release and have since racked up silver sales certification status from the BPI (British Phonographic Industry).

BLACK STONE CHERRY is:

Chris Robertson – Vocals/Guitar
Ben Wells – Guitar/Vocals
Jon Lawhon – Bass/Vocals
John Fred Young – Drums/Vocals

He emerged as an up-and-coming talent with the groups DREAM EVIL (Sweden), MYSTIC PROPHECY (Germany) and NIGHTRAGE (Greece), but it is his work with his own band FIREWIND (who have released seven studio albums and two live releases) and as a member of Ozzy Osbourne‘s band that have helped him emerge as one of the world’s top metal and rock guitarists. His work on Ozzy‘s “Scream” album led to a Grammy nomination in 2010, and his list of accolades includes Guitar Player magazine’s “Best Metal Guitarist,” the “Dimebag Darrell Shredder” award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, and Metal Hammer Greece “Best Guitarist” on four separate occasions.

Canadian multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend was interviewed on the March 7-9 edition of Full Metal Jackie‘s nationally syndicated radio show. You can now listen to the chat using the Podbean widget below.

To see a full list of stations carrying the program and when it airs, go to FullMetalJackieRadio.com.

The cover artwork for the forthcoming debut album from the CASUALTIES OF COOL project from Devin Townsend can be seen below.

Devin recently launched a three-month-long crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMusic for CASUALTIES OF COOL since the album will be released without record-label backing.

In a 2013 interview with BluntMag.com.au, Devin stated about CASUALTIES OF COOL: “If there’s anybody who’s new to what I do, who maybe heard ‘Liberation’ or some of the songs off ‘Epicloud’ and thought, ‘This is really cool, I could get into this,’ you’re going to hate CASUALTIES. [laughs] I mean, really, it’s as opposite of ‘Epicloud’ as ‘Ghost’ was to ‘Deconstruction’. It’s this weird, dark, not evil but verging on it, bluesy, Johnny Cash-y, strange, quiet folk record. But I love it, it’s the one record that I’ve done over the past 10 or 15 years where I can truly say, ‘This is where I am right now.’

“You know, the other things that I’ve done have been as well in their own right, ‘Epicloud’, ‘Deconstruction’ and ‘Addicted!’, but there was an agenda with those, I was trying to say something with them or I was trying to prove a point, make a statement about the past or whatever. CASUALTIES is something that I’ve done without any pressure, without anybody telling me what to do, without showing it to anyone, it’s just what evolved when I wasn’t thinking about it. As a result of that, I’m incredibly proud of it, but it remains to be seen whether or not other people will resonate with it. I think they will, man. I think it’s fucking awesome, and I mean, I haven’t smoked weed in a long time but I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t be awesome while you’re smoking. [laughs]”

Asked where CASUALTIES OF COOL will fit into the Devin Townsend discography in terms of sound — among his more traditional-sounding albums, or a bit more removed like his ambient albums, Devin said: “Somewhere in the middle, you know, somewhere in the middle. It’s like, if you took the weird elements of ‘Ki’ and the weird elements of ‘Devlab’ and added a vintage sort of vibe.

“My management had a suggestion, which I think is pretty cool, which was, ‘You shouldn’t call it DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT, you shouldn’t even put your name on it, just call it CASUALTIES OF COOL and put it out as its own thing.’ It’s got a different singer, I sing on like half of it right, but it’s got this lady [Vancouver artist Ché Aimee Dorval, who also appears on ‘Ki’] who’s just this brilliant singer, she’s a young, despondent-sounding bluesy vocalist and it’s creepy. I think that that might be a way for me to get away with it, putting it out without it being part of the DTP [DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT] or whatever.

“I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just go where it feels the most honest to go, then I deal with people thinking it’s weird afterwards. [laughs]”

Regarding whether there is a particular atmosphere he wants to create or a story he wants to convey with CASUALTIES OF COOL, Devin said: “Yeah there’s a story, definitely. It’s going to take a little longer than what we’ve got for me to explain it, but you’ll hear it eventually. I want it to be something you listen to quietly, by yourself, in the middle of the night, with a big old full moon outside. It’ll work perfectly.”
