On March 12, singer/bassist Schmier of German thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION was interviewed by Nick Perkel (a.k.a. Japan Nick), a contributing writer for The Aquarian Weekly and host of “Japan Nick’s Rock And Metal Pandemonium” on Montclair State University’s WMSC 90.3 radio station. Asked about his recently announced side project with members of ACCEPT, Schmier said: “It’s actually the drummer, Stefan [Schwarzman], who used to play for RUNNING WILD for many years, and he’s playing for ACCEPT now for many years also. And it’s Herman Frank, the guitar player. We met on several festivals in the last years and we’ve been hanging out. And they’re great guys. And we liked each other since point one. And somehow we had this crazy idea that in between ACCEPT and DESTRUCTION breaks, we could do something together. Because Stefan lives very close by now; he moved down here where I live. So we started to do some stuff, some rehearsals, and it turned out really great.”

He continued: “I’ve been doing this HEADHUNTER project back in the ’90s, and that was also a mix of classical heavy metal with a little bit of DESTRUCTION. So now I’m gonna go back to using my DESTRUCTION vibes, but the music is gonna be much more classical heavy metal, but it’s also, of course, gonna be more heavy and a little more powerful than ACCEPT stuff. So it’s gonna be a nice mixture. It fits really well.

“We have already written five songs. It’s actually still not really so official. So you’re one of the first persons that is interviewing me about this. I only did one interview before, with a guy from Israel, who basically put this on Blabbermouth back in the day.

“We still don’t have a name for the band. We’re writing songs right now, and as soon as we have a demo, then we’re gonna put out an official statement. But we’re having those five songs recorded now as a pre-demo, so when I’m coming back from [touring] the States [with DESTRUCTION], then we’re gonna enter the studio and record a pre-recording for the final album. So I’m excited. It sounds great. It sounds fresh. To me, it’s something different than DESTRUCTION, so it’s a great experience. And the guys are, of course… especially Herman, he’s a little bit older than me. He’s like my big, old brother. He has a lot more experience. Even if I am in the business for a long time, he has some more years, so I can learn from him. And it’s very interesting.”

He added: “I love classical heavy metal; it’s my fucking favorite. And it’s gonna be fun to do that. So I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a great side project.

“I’m not somebody who likes to sit at home the whole day. I like to be entertained and play music and have fun. And I’m looking forward to this new thing.”

Regarding whether fans can expect to hear the first music from the new project before the end of 2014, Schmier said: “It could be by the end of this year. If everything works out, we’re gonna have demos in April/May. Then look for a label. So we could enter the studio in the summer. So I hope it’s gonna happen. But, I mean, I have to do a DESTRUCTION album also, which will have top priority, of course. So we’ll see how everything goes. But I think the way it goes right now, the project will be [in the studio] earlier [than DESTRUCTION]. ‘Cause we have five songs done, and we already have new ideas. So if we find a good label fast, then it should be out by the end of the year.”

DESTRUCTION‘s 30th-anniversary album, “Spiritual Genocide”, was released on November 23, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2011’s “Day Of Reckoning” was recorded at Gernhart Studios in Troisdorf, Germany with engineer Martin Buchwalter and was mixed by Andy Classen. The album features guest appearances by Thomas “Angelripper” Such (SODOM), Andreas “Gerre” Geremia (TANKARD) and Ol Drake (EVILE). In addition, the “Mad Butcher”/“Release From Agony” lineup of DESTRUCTION — featuring guitarist Harry Wilkens and drummer Oliver Kaiser — reunited for one song.

The Heavy Metal Truants charity bike ride to Download 2013 kicks off tomorrow, so we checked in with Paolo from Trivium to see how it’s all shaping up…

What did you first think when you heard about Heavy Metal Truants?

The thought of riding 160 miles from London to Download sounded like a pretty crazy idea, so I said sign me up!

What inspired you to get involved?

I had been considering coming over for Download as a spectator, something which I had never done before. When I heard about the ride and the charity it was helping it was no-brainer for me. Raising money and preparing for the challenge of the ride has been a real fun experience.

How has the training been going?

Training has been great since I bought a new hybrid bike. I have been trying to ride everywhere I can and take some long rides on the weekend. I told my trainer at the gym I was doing the ride so he has added in a lot of conditioning. Even though it’s not a competition I didn’t want to be sucking wind and in pain the whole time.

Are you an avid cyclist? If so, what’s your experience?

I used to ride a lot more when I was younger, but since touring became a big part of my life I really haven’t been on a bike often. Since I bought this new bike I have become sort of addicted to getting out and enjoying the long rides up the beach. It’s definitely going to be something I stick with after the jaunt up to Download.

In the second of eight installments, Enslaved bassist/vocalist/lyricist Grutle Kjellson and rhythm guitarist/songwriter/lyricist Ivar Bjørnson offer song commentaries on their trademarked Norwegian strain of progressive extreme metal that will be unveiled with their twelfth studio album, “RIITIIR.” The album is due out in Europe on September 28th and in North America on October 9th via Nuclear Blast Records.

Kjellson comments on “Death In The Eyes Of Dawn:”

“It is impossible for a band like ENSLAVED not to be inspired by Bathory! And we somehow always end up paying a little tribute to Quorthon on each album. Bathory is our musical roots, maybe more than any other band. On Axioma Ethica Odini, the song ‘Singular’ became ‘the Bathory song,’ and this time it was ‘Death In The Eyes Of Dawn’ that got that honor! The song changed a whole lot from the first sketches, partly because of mine and Herbrand’s vocal arrangements and partly because of co-producer Iver Sandøy´s crazy idea that the second theme in the song sounded very Beatles-like and thus we had to develop that theme in a more Beatles-like direction! We did so, and ended up sounding nothing like the Beatles whatsoever! Maybe the bass guitar does, but I doubt that Macca [McCartney] ever sounded like I do vocally… not even on the demos for Magical Mystery Tour. The lyrics are inspired by the idea of self-destruction and the final judgment (Ragnarok in the Norse Mythology). You can find in several of the different mythologies around the globe: the mutual fear of the ‘dark’ forces in cosmos.”

Bjørnson on “Death In The Eyes Of Dawn:”

“A great thing with writing music for ENSLAVED is how solid the core identity of the band is: there’s room for allowing quite ‘direct’ inspirations and references into the music, and it still comes out and across as ENSLAVED’s interpretations of the music we’re inspired by, rather than us trying to be someone else. The main theme of the song is a humble tribute to ‘Viking-era’ Bathory (Hammerheart and Twilight Of The Gods) without being anything else than pure ENSLAVED in my ears. The two singers are doing such a formidable job on this track, and I’ve got to say that Ice’s lead before the mid-break is my favorite lead of his on this album… perhaps even among his entire body of work: simple, elegant and saturated with emotion and atmosphere. It is also necessary to emphasize co-producer Iver Sandøy’s invaluable participation in both the arrangement and production of the song; he played a large role in the song’s dynamics and final arrangement. It also has to be mentioned how brilliant Grutle’s title for the song is. Discussing the lyrics with him, I learned that my own understanding of them took a different path from his – all you could wish from lyrics!”

“RIITIIR” was recorded in Bergen, Norway at Duper Studios, Earshot Studios, Solslottet Studios, and Peersonal Sound. At Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, Jens Bogren handled mixing duties while Tony Lindgren handled the mastering. The team of producers includes Enslaved’s very own Ivar Bjørnson, Grutle Kjellson & Herbrand Larsen, plus Iver Sandøy.
