Where do you start with the greatest heavy metal band all time playing a set like this? You start with an actual, real-life Spitfire flying over the crowd. Obviously. That, ladies and gentlemen, is swagger.

Tonight, Iron Maiden return to Download for the first time in six years to finally bring their Maiden England set to the country that first birthed it, and as the collosal,Seventh Son…-inspired stage is revealed, it’s hard to not break down in sweaty man-tears right here and now. Luckily, we pull ourselves together in time for Moonchild to kick off a flawless selection of songs that span Maiden’s first Golden Age, with the band evidently as fired up as ever and Bruce Dickinson in parfticular showing an extra spring or two in his theatrically extravagant step, even by his showy standards.

Standard bangers like Can I Play With Madness and 2 Minutes To Midnight mix it up with rarer cuts such as The Prisoner and a storming Afraid To Shoot Strangers, with towering walls of flame, video packages and the occasional spurt of pyrotechnics seemingly standard fare for the evening. Dickinson remains the consumate crowd-charmer, be it in his thanking of the RAF for lending them a fucking plane for the evening or his cheeky plugs for Maiden’s new Trooper Beer, and the moment he breaks out his first “Scrrrrrrream for me Donington!” of the evening is, of course, a true goosebump moment.

Windy conditions mean that the sound does occasionally suffer for some of the earlier tracks, but the band power through and hit their stride in true style with a smashing double-header of Run To The Hills (complete with a sword-waving Custer Eddie) and Wasted Years followed by a monolithically huge run through Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son‘s gargantuan title track, which is arguably the finest moment of the whole set (even despite Brucey’s slightly dodgy-looking Misfits hair makeover).

The home stretch includes a spinetingling Fear Of The Dark and a reliably full-throttle Iron Maiden, before an outrageous encore of Aces High, The Evil That Men Do and Running Free brings complete pandemonium, with Bruce’s announcement that the band will return to London later this summer drawing one of the biggest cheers of the whole weekend. Yeah, we reckon we might go to that. Job done, hallowed turd reclaimed. It’s what they do. The’re Iron Fucking Maiden.
