Following the success of Gigantour 2013 and sold-out shows with IRON MAIDEN and BLACK SABBATH, MEGADETH has confirmed the “Super Collider” tour. The cross-country trek kicks off in St. Paul, Minnesota on November 23 and makes stops in Detroit, Boston and Charlotte, along with other markets. Support on the tour will come from FEAR FACTORY and NONPOINT.

MEGADETH‘s latest album, “Super Collider”, has sold 67,000 copies in the United States since its June 4 release. The CD arrived in stores via MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine‘s new label, Tradecraft, distributed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). It marks MEGADETH‘s first release since the band’s split with Roadrunner Records.

In a recent interview with Metal Insider, MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson stated about the band’s decision to release the new album via the group’s own label, “The whole imprint idea is that we pretty much just put our logo on our own record [laughs], but we use the muscle of Universal Music Group around the world to push it out and to use all of their marketing and distribution, which is what you want.

“Anyone can start a label, but if you’re just selling them out of your post office box, you’re gonna sell about two copies versus having it distributed around the world. So major-label distribution obviously makes all the difference in the world. And we noticed that when we went from ‘Killing Is My Business’ to the ‘Peace Sells’ record years ago.”

Regarding the songwriting process for “Super Collider”, Ellefson said: “We worked with [producer] Johnny K on the last record, so we already had the getting-to-know-each-other experience on that record; that was kind of the first date and this was more digging into the songs on the record and had a good idea of what we were going into when we started it. And, really, the songs were laid out in October and we did the ‘Countdown To Extinction’ 20th-anniversary tour, and by the time we were ready to start tracking at the end of December, we had a good road map of where we wanted to go and there were a lot of tunes that were already on the deck and ready.”

He added: “We’re a band now that is always on tour, so we always try to find little windows to make records in between. [laughs] So yeah, we were already laying out the record during the last world tour. And we knew once we were rolling off the road that we were going to go in and start tracking. January gave us the opportunity to write about six more tunes, which also included bringing in the cover song of [THIN LIZZY‘s] ‘Cold Sweat’.”

Richard Bienstock of Guitar World recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine and guitarist Chris Broderick. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Guitar World: You’ve stated publicly that you feel Chris is the best guitarist you’ve ever played with.

Mustaine: He’s such an enigma. What Chris is capable of doing and what he does are two totally different things. He could do a mind-blowing, over-the-fretboard seven-string solo for six minutes. But he can also play something incredibly melodic. You need to be able to play what fits the song. And that’s the cool thing about the journey we’ve been on together: we’ve learned a lot about each other as people and learned a lot from each other as players. And when it comes to solos, especially for a band like this, you gotta think about it. You gotta really think about where you’re going. You can’t just do scales and sweeps. That said, the guy can do 800 notes in four bars if he wants to.

Guitar World: Chris, how does it feel to hear Dave say things like that?

Broderick: It’s always very humbling, because he’s worked with a lot of incredible guitarists. Every past player in MEGADETH has brought something great to the table, and I think I’m lucky to be counted among them. But as far as how I work with Dave, in a way he makes it easy. The type of personality I am, I like to have a direction and a path and to know what I’m doing. And Dave has such a clear idea of what he wants that I don’t have to deal with a lot of decisions. I just pick up my guitar, put it on and play the songs.

Guitar World: As much as the band explores new territory on “Super Collider”, there are also some vintage MEGADETH moments. [MEGADETH bassist] Dave Ellefson has said that parts of the new record reminded him of “Killing Is My Business… and Business Is Good!”, and you can certainly hear that on something like the second half of “Dance In The Rain”.

Broderick: Definitely. When I hear a rhythm like the one at the end of “Dance In The Rain”, I start thinking about songs like “Rattlehead” [from “Killing Is My Business…”] and all of that older stuff that has so much angst to it. I definitely draw from that. I think there’s a direct line to those parts. They have that same mood. That same aggression.

Mustaine: But you know, when I’m writing stuff, I don’t think, This sounds like it’s from this era. I don’t have the ability to think like that. I wish I could. God, I’d go back to “Rust In Peace” and write another one! Because I was listening to it the other day and I thought, Man, what the fuck was I thinking when I wrote that? Because I know my limitations and shit, and I listen to the title track and I think, That was a lucky day!

Guitar World: Along those lines, you’ve been doing some of the old albums onstage for a few years now, first with the “Rust In Peace” 20th anniversary tour and more recently for a similar celebration for “Countdown To Extinction”.

Mustaine: It’s like a big giant circle. We were actually mixing the “Countdown” live DVD at the same time we were doing “Super Collider”. And the interesting thing is, I was listening to those songs and thinking they’re just as relevant today. Take “Psychotron”, and think about all the stuff that’s going on now with drones [unmanned combat vehicles]. So I don’t feel that there’s such a big stretch between then and now with this band. The only time I experience the passage of time is when I try to sing some of those songs. My voice doesn’t go that high anymore!

Nancy Sinatra, of course, the SEX PISTOLS, you know, so at the time we were doing this, it was all artists from a past day. That’s what made the THIN LIZZY song a great tune — the fact that that lineup will never exist ever again I think made it cool for us to be able to take the torch and run with it.”

On politics:

Mustaine: “You’ve got all these politicians saying that they’re your friends, and they’re not. Republican, Democrat, whoever they are, they’re all the same monsters, and they don’t care about us. When they passed that bill exempting them off of Obamacare, that was the cherry on top of the cupcake for me. All I have to say is, ‘I told you so.’ ”

On openly embracing Christianity:

Mustaine: “I don’t think that my faith has anything to do with my lyrics. I try and keep religion out of it. Frankly, for me, I don’t believe in religion. I have a personal relationship with God and with Christ, and that’s it. I don’t push that on anybody; it’s private. I kind of leave it there. Dave‘s [Ellefson] real open about it.”

On his days in METALLICA:

Mustaine: “I remember when I was in METALLICA, the second-to-the-last show that I did with those guys, [IRON MAIDEN bassist] Steve [Harris] came and checked us out. I was talking to him after the show and he goes, ‘Yeah, I think you guys are going to be big.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, I think so, too.’ Little did I know.”

On up-and-coming metal bands:

Mustaine: “Regardless of their age, if they’re young or they’re old or whatever, they’ve got talent. I’ve got to say that. But the originality is like flaxseed oil. To me, it’s absolutely tasteless.”

On how much of his competitive fire is still there:

Mustaine: “I’m not going to say I’m complacent, but put this into another metaphor. You’re a gunslinger. Just because you’re the best doesn’t mean you have to keep your gun out on the table all the time. You get respect. When people want to challenge you, they’ll let you know. It’s like, if you’re standing in front of a samurai, if he pulls his sword out even one inch, you’re fucked. Excuse my French.”

In a brand new interview with the Las Vegas Sun, MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine spoke about the reaction to the band’s latest album, “Super Collider”, and his plans for the follow-up effort.

“A record is that — a record, a piece of time,” Mustaine said of the fan response to “Super Collider”. “I was going through a lot of really cool stuff with the band, but a lot of really heavy, personal stuff with my mother-in-law’s Alzheimer’s. So people like some songs, don’t like others, and that’s always been the way with MEGADETH‘s fans. They’re opinionated.

“I think when you have a band that doesn’t really follow a set formula, people are going to react to certain songs and not to other songs. I mean, the very first song we ever did, we started with piano. Who would’ve ever thought that?”

Regarding the recent reports that MEGADETH has already begun work on the material for the next CD, Mustaine said: “I do want to continue to write. I think it’s fun to write songs and as a musician, sometimes you’ve got something stuck in your soul that you gotta get it out.

“[‘Forget To Remember’ on ‘Super Collider’] is this whole process of watching this loved one in my family just melt in front of your eyes; it’s hard. It really, really challenged what I was made of; she’s still alive, but she’s not there anymore. And how do you put that in a song if it’s not going to be a sad song? It’d be pretty fucked up to make a happy song about something tragic.

“So, yeah, we always have a lot of stuff we want to write about. I think it comes in due time. We’re always picking up the guitar and making noises, sometimes it’s a cool riff, and you’re ‘tape that real quick,’ and other times it’s ‘stop.’ [laughs] And that’s the great thing when you’re close like we are. We’re four guys who are really, really close, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone into the jam room and told Chris [Broderick, MEGADETH guitarist] to knock it off, and he’ll do the same solo for an hour and a half straight. It’s Chinese water torture. [laughs]

Mustaine was also asked if he ever feels the new stuff has to compete with his past successes or even just with nostalgia.

“I don’t feel like that, but some fans certainly act like that,” he said. “We always hear, ‘Make ‘Rust In Peace’ again.’ It’d be real easy to do it, but where’s the artistic integrity of doing that? And people say, ‘You should get Marty [Friedman, former MEGADETH guitarist] back in the band.’ Marty doesn’t want to be in MEGADETH. He quit, he’s a quitter, so get over it. And Nick [Menza, former MEGADETH drummer] isn’t very healthy. Look at any of the video clips of him lately. So it’s like either you’re stupid or you’re a dreamer. And when you make a record, you don’t stake your whole life on the success or failure of any one song. Some people like it, some don’t. [‘Super Collider’] entered the charts at No. 6. If that’s something to be critical of, then bring it. I’ll take that all day long.”
