Paul Masvidal (CYNIC, DEATH) co-produced and played guitar on the four-song EP accompanying actor Jim Carrey‘s first children’s book, “How Roland Rolls”.

The tracks “Everything & Nothing”, “Hungry”, “I’m All Yours” and “Keep On Roland” feature the actor singing with his daughter, Jane.

A seven-minute video clip featuring footage of Masvidal working with Carrey in the recording studio can be seen below.

Released on September 24 and published by Some Kind Of Garden Media, “How Roland Rolls” is dedicated to Carrey‘s 3-year-old grandson, Jackson, and features “cinematic” illustrations by Rob Nason (“Anastasia”, “Thumbelina”).

“I wrote ‘How Roland Rolls’ specifically as a way for parents and grandparents to engage with the children in quality together-time,” Carrey wrote in a message on the picture book’s web site.

“Not only will the message of the story help them feel connected, worthwhile, and a part of something vast and grand … the very act of adults spending time simply to be with them, and only with them, will pay off in an experience of fulfillment that’s truly beyond compare.”

Jackson‘s father is Alex Santana, the singer of the Los Angeles-based death metal band BLOOD MONEY, to whom Jane Carrey was married for only a year before the couple split in 2010.

Jim Carrey was rumored to be to be a fan of the death metal band CANNIBAL CORPSE, which made a cameo appearance in Carrey‘s 1994 movie “Ace Ventura: Pet Detective”. However, in a July 10, 2009 posting on BLABBERMOUTH.NET, Santana himself put the rumor to rest, writing, “For the record, Jim hates death metal… He’d never heard of CANNIBAL until doin’ that movie. Trust me, it’s the first thing I asked him when we met.”

“DG-7″, a brand new song from HAIL OF BULLETS, the Dutch death metal band featuring GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby, THANATOS guitarists Stephan Gebédi and Paul Baayens, vocalist Martin Van Drunen (HAIL OF BULLETS, PESTILENCE, ASPHYX) and former HOUWITSER bass player Theo van Eekelen, can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below (courtesy of Stereogum). The track comes off HAIL OF BULLETS‘ third album, “III: The Rommel Chronicles”, which will be released on October 29 (one day earlier internationally) via Metal Blade Records.

“III The Rommel Chronicles” began to take shape in the second half of 2012 when HAIL OF BULLETS started writing songs for this third album, which sees the band approaching things a bit differently lyric-wise. Instead of describing a certain campaign or theatre of war, this album focuses on the military life, rise and fall of German field marshal Erwin Rommel.

Despite fighting on the wrong side, Rommel was undeniably a great strategist who was both feared and admired by his enemies.

Musically, “III The Rommel Chronicles” recalls a bit of their debut album. The songs are faster, more raw, more aggressive and direct than on “On Divine Winds” which had a more epic, heroic feel. Once again, production duties were handled by Ed Warby and the album was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö. A new lyrical approach also necessitated a different style of artwork, which was provided by Dutch artist Erik Wijnands.

Swanö stated about the new HAIL OF BULLETS longplayer: “HAIL OF BULLETS return for their third album, armed to the teeth with a thunderous death metal onslaught that combines the raw ferocity of the first album with the more expanded arrangements of the second. A death metal masterpiece!”

“III The Rommel Chronicles” track listing:

01. Swoop Of The Falcon
02. Pour Le Mérite
03. DG-7
04. To The Last Breath Of Man And Beast
05. DAK
06. The Desert Fox
07. Tobruk
08. Farewell To Africa
09. The Final Front
10. Death Of A Field Marshal

As previously reported, a picture-disc version of HAIL OF BULLETS‘ debut album, “Of Frost And War”, was released on February 4 via Metal Blade. The picture disc is strictly limited to 500 copies.

HAIL OF BULLETS‘s second full-length album, “On Divine Winds”, entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 75.

HAIL OF BULLETS is:

Martin Van Drunen – Vocals
Paul Baayens – Guitar
Stephan Gebédi – Guitar
Theo Van Eekelen – Bass
Ed Warby – Drums

Unique Leader Records has announced the signing of ALTERBEAST to a multi-album deal.

ALTERBEAST is a technical death metal band hailing from Sacramento, California, formed in 2011 under the name GARY BUSEY AMBER ALERT (GBAA). ALTERBEAST quickly began writing songs, combining influences from favorites such as THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, NECROPHAGIST and SPAWN OF POSSESSION, along with numerous other classic death metal acts like DISSECTION and MORBID ANGEL. After a year of dedicated writing, ALTERBEAST released a demo in the winter of 2012 and played countless shows alongside such greats as DEICIDE, DYING FETUS, TESTAMENT, REVOCATION, EXHUMED, SEVERED SAVIOR and many others. They soon began gaining momentum in the death metal community and became known for their intense riffs, blistering drums, elaborate guitar solos and a very developed stage show.

One year after releasing their demo, they entered Augmented Audio at Sound Temple Studios to record their debut album, “Immortal”, with former THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER bassist Ryan “Bart” Williams engineering. After recording at Sound Temple, the band acquired Gabe Seeber (THE KENNEDY VEIL) for drum duties. Deciding that it was a must to have Gabe‘s talents on this record, ALTERBEAST booked time at Castle Ultimate with engineer Zack Ohren to record drums and mix and master.

Due in early 2014, “Immortal” will consist of eight tracks of extreme, melodic, brutal, and uncompromising death metal.

2013 has been a pretty amazing year for progressive metal of all sorts. Last Chance To Reason put out the great almost aquatic sounding album Level 3, The Ocean dropped the entirely aquatic Pelagial, and Gorguts returned to show all you young'ins how an OG technical death metal band does the genre right with Colored Sands. There are so many more I could …

Wagner “Antichrist” Lamounier, former vocalist for the long-defunct Brazilian cult ’80s black/death metal band SARCÓFAGO, joined Brazilian black metallers MYSTIFIER on stage on August 9 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil to sing the classic SARCÓFAGO song “Nightmare”. Fan-filmed video footage of his appearance in front of around 300 fans at Matriz Casa Cultural can be seen below.

Formed in 1985 in Belo Horizonte, SARCÓFAGO (Portuguese for “sarcophagus”) has been described as one of Brazil’s most controversial metal bands ever. The front cover of the group’s debut album, “I.N.R.I.” (1987), was an early influence on black metal’s image, especially with respect to the corpsepaint-style makeup.

MYSTIFIER recently inked a reissue agreement with the Florida-based label Greyhaze Records. The deal will involve the re-release of two classic albums by this cult band. The LPs in question are “Wicca” (1992) and “Goetia” (1993). Long out of print, both efforts will be reissued by Greyhaze in different formats, including deluxe CD/DVD digipaks of each album as well as deluxe vinyl versions. The releases will feature rare photos, bonus audio tracks, videos and other band memorabilia.
