PitCam TV conducted an interview with vocalist Dani “Filth” Davey of British extreme metallers CRADLE OF FILTH during the band’s European co-headlining tour with. You can now watch the chat below.

Guitarists Paul Allender and James McIlroy both sat out CRADLE OF FILTH‘s European tour with BEHEMOTH due to “hugely important family matters” and “serious neck surgery,” respectively. Filling in for them were Ashok of Czech groups ROOT and INNER FEAR and Richard Shaw of English acts EMPEROR CHUNG and NG26.

2014 marks the 20th anniversary of “The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh”, the historic debut album from CRADLE OF FILTH on Cacophonous Records. To honor this momentous occasion, CRADLE OF FILTH is planning a whole smorgasbord of exciting stuff, including the first-ever CRADLE OF FILTH comic, the release of a career-spanning double disc best-of, and, of course, the subsequent touring.

CRADLE OF FILTH‘s tenth studio album, “The Manticore And Other Horrors”, sold 4,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 96 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous full-length effort, “Darkly, Darkly, Venus Aversa”, opened with 5,800 units in November 2010 to land at No. 99.

Canadian multi-instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and producer Devin Townsend was interviewed on the March 7-9 edition of Full Metal Jackie‘s nationally syndicated radio show. You can now listen to the chat using the Podbean widget below.

To see a full list of stations carrying the program and when it airs, go to FullMetalJackieRadio.com.

The cover artwork for the forthcoming debut album from the CASUALTIES OF COOL project from Devin Townsend can be seen below.

Devin recently launched a three-month-long crowdfunding campaign on PledgeMusic for CASUALTIES OF COOL since the album will be released without record-label backing.

In a 2013 interview with BluntMag.com.au, Devin stated about CASUALTIES OF COOL: “If there’s anybody who’s new to what I do, who maybe heard ‘Liberation’ or some of the songs off ‘Epicloud’ and thought, ‘This is really cool, I could get into this,’ you’re going to hate CASUALTIES. [laughs] I mean, really, it’s as opposite of ‘Epicloud’ as ‘Ghost’ was to ‘Deconstruction’. It’s this weird, dark, not evil but verging on it, bluesy, Johnny Cash-y, strange, quiet folk record. But I love it, it’s the one record that I’ve done over the past 10 or 15 years where I can truly say, ‘This is where I am right now.’

“You know, the other things that I’ve done have been as well in their own right, ‘Epicloud’, ‘Deconstruction’ and ‘Addicted!’, but there was an agenda with those, I was trying to say something with them or I was trying to prove a point, make a statement about the past or whatever. CASUALTIES is something that I’ve done without any pressure, without anybody telling me what to do, without showing it to anyone, it’s just what evolved when I wasn’t thinking about it. As a result of that, I’m incredibly proud of it, but it remains to be seen whether or not other people will resonate with it. I think they will, man. I think it’s fucking awesome, and I mean, I haven’t smoked weed in a long time but I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t be awesome while you’re smoking. [laughs]”

Asked where CASUALTIES OF COOL will fit into the Devin Townsend discography in terms of sound — among his more traditional-sounding albums, or a bit more removed like his ambient albums, Devin said: “Somewhere in the middle, you know, somewhere in the middle. It’s like, if you took the weird elements of ‘Ki’ and the weird elements of ‘Devlab’ and added a vintage sort of vibe.

“My management had a suggestion, which I think is pretty cool, which was, ‘You shouldn’t call it DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT, you shouldn’t even put your name on it, just call it CASUALTIES OF COOL and put it out as its own thing.’ It’s got a different singer, I sing on like half of it right, but it’s got this lady [Vancouver artist Ché Aimee Dorval, who also appears on ‘Ki’] who’s just this brilliant singer, she’s a young, despondent-sounding bluesy vocalist and it’s creepy. I think that that might be a way for me to get away with it, putting it out without it being part of the DTP [DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT] or whatever.

“I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just go where it feels the most honest to go, then I deal with people thinking it’s weird afterwards. [laughs]”

Regarding whether there is a particular atmosphere he wants to create or a story he wants to convey with CASUALTIES OF COOL, Devin said: “Yeah there’s a story, definitely. It’s going to take a little longer than what we’ve got for me to explain it, but you’ll hear it eventually. I want it to be something you listen to quietly, by yourself, in the middle of the night, with a big old full moon outside. It’ll work perfectly.”

Frontiers Records will release the debut album from Swedish singer ANGELICA, “Thrive”, on November 29 in Europe and December 3 in North America.

Best known for being the singer in THE MURDER OF MY SWEET, Angelica Rylin finally decided to pursue her childhood dream and to walk in the footsteps of such amazing singers such as Ann Wilson of HEART, Leigh Matty of ROMEO’S DAUGHTER and Robin Beck and record her debut solo album in a true melodic rock style.

Some melodic rock songwriting luminaries answered the call in order to create the magic harmonies and music displayed on Angelica‘s debut album. “Harry Hess, Daniel Flores, Robert Sall, Alessandro Del Vecchio and Anders Wigelius all contributed,” says Angelica, and some excellent guitarists such as Jesper Strömblad (IN FLAMES), Magnus Karlsson (PRIMAL FEAR), Per Berquist (SMASH INTO PIECES) also appear on the album. There is also a very special performance by keyboardist Matt Guillory (JAMES LABRIE). Still, Angelica wrote or co-wrote several songs on her record, showing another side of her abilities.

“I got the chance to step out of my comfort zone and just focus on being a great singer. I also got to do a couple of amazing co-writes, for instance with Harry Hess of HAREM SCAREM,” continues Angelica. “But what I’m most happy about is that I got to include a couple of my own songs too. It’s a great mix of classic but modern AOR love songs.”

Helped by producer, drummer and songwriting partner Daniel Flores (FIND ME, SEVENTH WONDER, THE MURDER OF MY SWEET), Angelica managed to create a superb album which offers soaring and instantly likeable hook lines, solid guitar riffs and a crisp sound.

“After releasing two albums with THE MURDER OF MY SWEET, I get an opportunity to show my fans a slightly different side of me and at the same time have fun and explore another side of rock music that I grew up with and truly love,” says Angelica. “I have pushed my boundaries vocally on this album and grown as a singer, which is very important for me on a more personal level. I guess this is every singer’s dream.”

“Thrive” track listing:

01. Breaking My Heart
02. I Am Strong
03. To Your Rescue
04. Can’t Stop Love
05. Nothing Else You Can Break
06. Riding Out The Storm

The self-titled debut album from SCAR THE MARTYR, the new band led by SLIPKNOT drummer Joey Jordison, is available for streaming in its entirety at relics.scarthemartyr.com. The CD will be released on October 1 via Roadrunner Records.

Recorded at Sound Farm Studios in Des Moines, Iowa, SCAR THE MARTYR‘s album was helmed by Rhys Fulber, whose production and mixing credits include FEAR FACTORY, ROB ZOMBIE, MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY and more. The CD was written by Joey and lead vocalist Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), and joining them in the studio were keyboardist Chris Vrenna (NINE INCH NAILS), as well as Simon and Norris, who collectively handled all lead guitars on the album.

08. Anatomy Of Erinyes
09. Prayer For Prey
10. White Nights In A Day Room
11. Effigy Unborn
12. Never Forgive Never Forget
13. Mind’s Eye
14. Last Night On Earth

SCAR THE MARTYR was recently on the road as the support act for DANZIG on a North American tour which also included performances by former MISFITS guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein and HUNTRESS. The trek kicked off August 9 at Sound Academy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and wrapped up on August 31 at Tempe, Arizona’s Marquee Theatre.

In addition to Jordison, SCAR THE MARTYR‘s lineup for the tour featured singer Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), guitarists Jed Simon (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) and Kris Norris (DARKEST HOUR), keyboardist Joey Blush and bassist Kyle Konkiel (IN THIS MOMENT).

“With this project, I focused my efforts on writing for the better of the song,” said Jordison. “I wasn’t worried about flash or persona… It’s all about writing a good solid song. I’m writing music that people can grasp and hold on to…something that resonates. If you don’t have that, then you have nothing.”

“I’d been working on new SLIPKNOT material since the end of the ‘All Hope Is Gone’ tour cycle, but I ended up with so much stuff I had to take a step back and stop working on it,” he explained to Metal Hammer magazine. “The time wasn’t right. But I came up with a bunch of material that was really killer and heavy and started taking some of it in a different direction. I started focusing on a lot of the post-punk and industrial stuff that I’ve always loved and started putting super heavy and brutal guitars over the top of it. That’s how it started. It’s taken me a couple of years to get to this point, but I can honestly say this is the most satisfied I’ve ever been in the studio. I can’t wait for everyone to hear this shit.”

SCAR THE MARTYR will support ALICE IN CHAINS on their U.K. tour in November.

“Fire On The Mountain”, the debut album from the heavy metal “supergroup” TWILIGHT OF THE GODS, is available for streaming in its entirety using the SoundCloud widget below. The CD will be released on September 27 in Europe and October 1 in North America via Season Of Mist.

TWILIGHT OF THE GODS is: Alan Averill (PRIMORDIAL, DEAD SOVEREIGN, BLOOD REVOLT) on vocals, Nick Barker (ex-CRADLE OF FILTH, ex-DIMMU BORGIR, ex-TESTAMENT, ex-EXODUS) on drums, guitarists Rune Eriksen (AURA NOIR, ex-AVA INFERI, ex-MAYHEM) and Patrik Lindgren (THYRFING), and Frode Glesnes (EINHERJER) on bass.

“Fire On The Mountain” track listing:

01. Destiny Forged In Blood
02. Children Of Cain
03. Fire On The Mountain (1683)
04. Preacher Man
05. Sword Of Damocles
06. The End Of History
07. At Dawn We Ride

The effort will be made available as a CD digipack and a limited-edition LP via the Season Of Mist e-shop.

In a recent interview with Metal Hammer magazine, Averill stated about “Fire On The Mountain”: “We grew up with and through most of our reference points. This is just what just came out when we play. We didn’t need to go, ‘We need to write songs that sound like MANOWAR,’ but we all love MANOWAR. There’s a fine line to walk between pastiche, parody and putting of the old gonzoid heavy metal charm into it, but not being too self-knowing in that sense.”

Asked if it was weird to switch over to singing classic metal lyrics, and finding out how he related to those lyrics, Averill said: “Definitely. The thing is that it’s full of the gonzoid heavy metal idioms — the swords and the steel and the blood and the fire. It was a difficult balance to find, to strike between being full of a certain glory and beauty and charm of old heavy metal, without it being too wink-wink, nod-nod, self-parody, but really genuinely meaning it because that’s what we all love, and treating it with the sort of kid gloves and respect that it deserves.”

He continued: “But yeah, it was difficult trying to find a different voice, another kind of lyric but at the same time, if you take, say, the title track, ‘Fire On The Mountain’, that’s my Dio tribute and it sounds like a RAINBOW songtitle. But yeah, the song is about the siege of Vienna by the Ottoman empire in 1683 where King Leopold I and the Holy Roman See defeated the Turks, and those, I think, had a lot to do with saving the European culture and the Enlightenment and all sorts of stuff. So if you were to actually look at it, you’d go, ‘Actually, there’s something being said here, but it’s written in heavy metal vernacular, which was handed down to us from IRON MAIDEN and whoever. But it’s a challenge, for sure, and it’s also a challenge to write a chorus that people could sing. You’re sitting there for the first time thinking, actually, how could I write this in such a way for people at a show or at a festival to get behind it, you know? It’s just a traditional, hard-rock structure, which is a breath of fresh air for all of us, because we’ve all, for the past 20 years, been playing extreme music and darker music to some degree, so it’s a bit like something fresh for all of us, despite the fact that it’s all old.”

The self-titled debut album from ASHES OF ARES, the band featuring Matt Barlow (ex-ICED EARTH), Van Williams (ex-NEVERMORE) and Freddie Vidales (ex-ICED EARTH), sold around 900 copies in the United States in its first week of release. Issued on September 6 via Nuclear Blast Records, the CD was recorded in part at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida with legendary producer Jim Morris (ICED EARTH, OBITUARY, JON OLIVA’S PAIN, JAG PANZER). It was made available as a limited CD in a digipak, including a bonus track, as well as in two different 2LP versions.

“Ashes Of Ares” track listing:

01. The Messenger
02. Move The Chains
03. On Warrior’s Wings
04. Punishment
05. This Is My Hell
06. Dead Man’s Plight
07. Chalice Of Man
08. The Answer
09. What I Am
10. The One-Eyed King
11. The Answer (acoustic version; bonus track)

The video for the song “This Is My Hell” can be seen below. The clip was directed by David Brodsky (MUNICIPAL WASTE, WHITECHAPEL, KYLESA, REVOCATION) and was shot in an old steel foundry in Newburgh, New York along the Hudson River.

Matt Barlow recently told DeadRhetoric.com about the songwriting process for “Ashes Of Ares”: “It really is for the first time being in total creative control of lyrics and vocal melodies. That’s a big deal for me. It’s a big step, but without Freddie writing the music — he wrote 99.9 however much of the music — it would be different. I’m a music writer, but not writer per se. I did write the basis for “Move The Chains”, but my guitar playing sucks [laughs], but Freddie made it sound like actual guitar playing, and I did “The Answer”, which I wrote acoustically. It’s really more… I’m going to take the hits — good or bad — as far as lyrics and melodies because it is all me. Freddie wrote 99.9 [percent], however much of the music, but it’s really this collaborative effort. Van took the ideas we had and wrote these cool drum parts that we didn’t even think of — it changed the dynamic of the songs. It’s a really cool joint collaboration, and we’re really proud.”

Regarding the album title and the cover artwork, which was designed by drummer Van Williams, Van stated: “We discussed a few ideas, but once we had developed the band logo, it felt right to use it as the introduction to the band along with the name as the focal point for our first album. The artwork, for me, reflects where each of us has been and how we are coming together from our pasts in this new endeavour.”

ASHES OF ARES is:

Matthew Barlow – Vocals
Freddie Vidales – Guitar/Bass
Van Williams – Drums
Gio Geraca – Guitar (session/touring member only)
Dean Sternberg – Bass (session/touring member only)

ASHES OF ARES is a band which represents the culmination of experiences, trials and tribulations of its founding members. Within months of their departures from the iconic metal bands ICED EARTH and NEVERMORE, the trio came together with a renewed drive to create a sound which is a true collaboration of their personal influences, ideas and visions. Armed with the knowledge acquired through years of the writing, touring and recording cycle, and with the support of an army of loyal fans across the globe, ASHES OF ARES is poised to carve out a new legacy and stand alongside those who have helped pave the way.

It should be no surprise who French death grinders NEPHREN-KA emulates. Consider this group in the milling vein of NILE‘s debut album from which they derive their namesake, “Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka”. Inspired by the same sandy wastelands as NILE, NEPHREN-KA doesn’t consult ancient Sumerian scriptures on their debut full-length, “The Fall of Omnius”. Instead, they choose the fictional desert planet Arrakis from Frank Herbert‘s “Dune” to belt out a nasty and insidious score, presumably with the explicit purpose of smiting the memory of TOTO and Brian Eno from the 1984 film soundtrack.

“The Fall of Omnius” stakes its muse from the giant Shai-Hulud sand worms that raise hell all over the Dune universe, plus the cultish Fremen, worshippers of those gi-normous annelids. Subconscious whiffs of spice mélange, cinnamon and aldehyde are the only endearments to be hinted on “The Fall of Omnius”. Otherwise, it’s one careening track of chaos after another, all building up to the promise of a climactic desert war that’s translated in earnest.

For death metal purists, “The Fall of Omnius” is going to be mandatory listening. The opening track “Butlerian Djihad” dumps scalding rains of grind and reeling guitar and bass strikes that march menacingly even more than the inflictive drums. While riding a sand worm in Herbert‘s world seems as much of a thrill ride as a frightening proposition, NEPHREN-KA manages to tap into both the euphoria and the blunt fear in the face of those Old Men of the Desert.

Once “Mastering the Voice” propels from its initial plod, the relentless barrages from drummer Thibaud Pailoux become a genuine spectacle. Pailoux‘s omnipresent triplicates and double hammers convey a steady, blitzing tempo that could be correlated with Herbert‘s “thumpers”, as in the vibrating gadgets used as part of worm charming. Here is where NEPHREN-KA astutely merges extreme metal with a literary classic. If you’ve ever wondered what kind of adrenalized metronome Herbert meant to keep his potential death dealers honest, this could very well be it, even by 1965 music theories.

NEPHREN-KA really begins to impress by the time “Legend of Selim (Part 1: The Seeds of Discord)” erupts with blurring draughts, followed by relentless pounding from “The Rise of Omnius” through “Praise Shai-Hulud”. The album’s finale, “To the Golden Path”, detonates with searing layers of guitar shred. Between all of the merciless mayhem is a pseudo orchestral interlude on the outro to “Fedyakins Storm”, lending this gory project a trace of cinematic flair before NEPHREN-KA releases the proverbial hounds with “The Cymek Revolution”.

Bassist Alexandre Phalippon not only keeps looping time with the machine-like paring from guitarist Sebastein Briat, Phalippon is fully characterized throughout the entire album, especially on “The Cymek Revolution” and “Praise Shai-Hulud”. Briat and Phalippon really put on a show in the solo section of “Legend of Selim Part 1″ at the fore of vocalist Laurent Chambe‘s chawing pentameter. Chambe is nearly as lethal, precise and nauseating (meant in a complimentary fashion) as George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. Death metal hounds will embrace him along with every dexterous component of NEPHREN-KA.

If the Shai-Hulud are considered nearly indestructible gods of the sand, then NEPHREN-KA does everything in their capacity to construe The Great Makers as brutally and horrifically as they can. “The Fall of Omnius” is calamitous, booming and so freaking fast a second listen will be necessary to catch every blinding set of scales and devastating beat pattern NEPHREN-KA hurls out. For certain, the Battle of Arrakeen sounds aptly gruesome in these guys’ hands.
