Carcass: legends return

Two big albums from very different ends of the metal spectrum this week – but both are deserving of your attention.

First up comes the much-anticipated new album from British death metal royalty, Carcass! The band’s first album of new material for 17 years (yes, it’s really been that long), Surgical Steel is a stunning, muscular display of fret-tearing musicianship, relentless death metal aggression and irrepressible heavy metal melody. It’s a definite shout for the best extreme metal album of the year, and it underlines exactly why we’ve missed them. Get it now on Nuclear Blast and don’t forget to catch the guys on Defenders of the Faith in November!

Also released this week is the fifth album from Ohio metalcore heavyweights, The Devil Wears Prada. Definitely a band that have got better and better with age, TDWP continue their rich run of form with 8:18; another collection of modern metal anthems destined to have people flipping inanimate objects and pitting their way over barriers across the globe. It’s really bloody good, it’s out now via Roadrunner, and you can also read more about it in our brand new issue! How’s that for a cheap plug?!

Hell

We’ve only been sent another update on that new Hell album from our mate, Andy Sneap. What’s occurin’, Sneap?

“Thank Satan it’s Friday! Still not enough hours in the day, how God created the world in six days I’ll never know… I think he’s lying, personally. Last of the bass going down today hopefully and I’m still loving the fact we managed to get cowbell into a song, I’d have it all over the album if it was down to me. Just one more song vocally to work a couple of sections out on and I have guitars on an old song , Deliver Us From Evil, to do late tonight once everyone has gone home.

“Hopefully I’ll be in mix mode by Monday; one good thing about tracking your own album is I’ve been able to pre mix stuff and prep the sessions to how I’d have them so this speeds the process up drastically. We are immensely proud with what we’ve achieved here, hopefully you will enjoy it as much as we do.”

New Hell album Curse And Chapter will be released November 25 via Nuclear Blast.

Hell

We’ve only been sent another update on that new Hell album from our mate, Andy Sneap. What’s occurin’, Sneap?

“Spent the last 14 hrs tracking drums with Tim “ernie” Bower. Its an in joke, (google bennie Hill + ernie), we have alot of “in” jokes in this band, its great to finally be in a band where everyone wants the same result, team players….who would have thought!!! Lets just say, its a refreshing change from my previous position. Go figure.

“Anyway, All 12 tracks now done on drums, myself and Kev in full swing finishing guitars and keys, Tony in later this week to do the last of the bass and Dave is in lunch time to keep working on vocals. Artwork and photos to go over in the meantime, plus sorting travel and shows for sept and tour in November. I also have the label wanting listening copies and I’m due to fly to US in 3 weeks straight after german festival to start work producing the next Accept record. I don’t think I’ve ever been busier…..did I mention having to do a studio report for metal hammer everyday also……”

Hell

We’ve only been sent another update on that new Hell album from our mate, Andy Sneap. What’s occurin’, Sneap?

“Spent most of today refining vocal ideas with Dave and getting final vocals down. We tend to demo things to a pretty high standard but its always good to come back and see whether you can better a take once we are all familiar with the songs. With most of the new stuff we’ve been jamming it as a band after demoing it to find comfortable tempos and little nuances that you only get in a band environment. Getting some great takes out of Dave, he’s really come into his own as a singer since the first record. Also been printing final keyboard stuff and getting rhythms down on another 2 songs. Solid 14 hr days in the studio right now but really confident with every song.”

Hell

Oi oi, it’s another update on that new Hell album from our mate Andy Sneap. What’s happening, Andy?

“Ladies and Gentleman, Mr Tony Speakman! Speak being the operative word as you can never shut this guy up once he gets talking. So I stopped him talking and made him play today. Tony, besides being one of the hottest looking bass players on today’s metal scene is actually one of the best bass players I’ve recorded Known for his bad taste in leather jackets, he’s a keen fisherman and real ale expert. Bass is now recorded to seven songs and we are moving onto more vocals tomorrow morning. Did I mention the Oxo shepherds pie adverts? (Google them!)”

Hell

Resurrected NWOBHM crusaders Hell are busy in the studio working on the follow-up to 2011′s glorious Human Remains, so we asked guitarist Andy Sneap how it’s all coming together.

What’s happening, Sneap?

“Spent the day tracking guitars to the album opener (and eighth track recorded so far). Quite a fast paced little ditty with lots of unexpected twists and turns. Aiming to get 11 or 12 recorded in total by the end of the month but that all depends on deadlines, schedules and how we feel things are working out. I’m very pleased and genuinely excited by what we have put down so far, the studio is a mess and I find myself wandering around at ungodly hours talking to myself, tweaking hi hat EQ’s and trying bizarre solo ideas, which I tend to scrap when I listen with fresh ears the next day. It’s one of the pitfalls of having a studio attached to your house , you never can get away from it….”

Cheers, Sneap! New Hell album Curse And Chapter will be released November 25 via Nuclear Blast.

Bloodstock: Bringing the heavy

Day two and 3 Inches Of Blood bring their crash course in heavy fucking metal to the main stage, as well as the first glimpses of sunshine. Granted, they’ve made a career out of rehashing Priest riffs as their own, but who cares when it’s this much fun?

Hell are up next and bring a stage show unheard of for this time of day, along with their classic metal riffage. Frontman David Bower struts the stage on stilts as some sort of demonic faun, with a head mic enabling him to be hands free for some rather adventurous gesturing. Flaming gargoyles, stained glass windows, giant pipe organs…it’s ridiculously over the top and bombastic, which is exactly why this crowd fucking love it. Make sure you catch them on our Defenders Of The Faith 4 tour with Amon Amarth and Carcass!

Kataklysm know exactly how to make death metal fun, brutal and accessible. The Canadian powerhouse deliver one of the tightest sets of the weekend, and it’s the perfect soundtrack to get heads banging and the first beers of the day in. Glorious stuff.

There are bands. And then there is Gojira. The French metal titans sound absolutely colossal today, despite some of their equipment and stage gear getting stuck at customs. But Gojira at even 70% is still leagues above their many contemporaries, and the earth-trembling heaviness of anthems such as The Heaviest Matter Of The Universe and Backbone make it crystal clear this is a band that can do no wrong. A surprise appearance from Randy Blythe understandably gets a deafening response and Gojira end their set as the unrivaled gods of the weekend so far.

No band can really follow that, but the show must go on and Sabaton do their best. Luckily, there are a fair few fans in the crowd who sing along to every word of their odes to battle and tanks and suchlike. Good work.

God knows why Avantasia are main support tonight. Whilst there are clearly a few hundred diehards losing their minds at the front, and the musicianship on stage is certainly impressive, the main stage crowd thins drastically due to the drop in momentum. There doesn’t seem to be one person that doesn’t agree this really should have been Gojira’s slot. Oh well…
