Original GREAT WHITE bassist Lorne Black has died. He appeared on the band’s 1984 self-titled debut, 1986’s “Shot In The Dark” and 1987’s “Once Bitten…”.

Original GREAT WHITE singer Jack Russell, who is currently touring with a version of the band calling itself JACK RUSSELL’S GREAT WHITE, has posted the following statement: “It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the passing of Lorne Black yesterday [Friday, September 27]! Our hearts go out to his family, friends and fans.

Lorne was a huge part of the first incarnation of GREAT WHITE! May he rest in peace.”

Added GREAT WHITE guitarist Mark Kendall: “I saw [Lorne‘s] cousin Robert a few months ago and we were in touch. Robert told me Lorne wasn’t too good then.

“I lost Robert‘s number when I changed phones, which bums me out. He used to work for us.

“I loved Lorne and I am truly sad to get this news. I know he has battle demons for along time and I am so sad to hear of his passing.

“RIP, my friend…”

Maiden with Clive Burr (far left)

We’re absolutely gutted to report that former Iron Maiden drummer Clive Burr has passed away. Clive passed away peacefully in his home last night after a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.

“This is terribly sad news,” comments Maiden bassist Steve Harris. “Clive was a very old friend of all of us. He was a wonderful person and an amazing drummer who made a valuable contribution to Maiden in the early days when we were starting out. This is a sad day for everyone in the band and those around him and our thoughts and condolences are with his partner Mimi and family at this time.”

Bruce Dickinson adds, “I first met Clive when he was leaving Samson and joining Iron Maiden. He was a great guy and a man who really lived his life to the full. Even during the darkest days of his M.S., Clive never lost his sense of humour or irreverence. This is a terribly sad day and all our thoughts are with Mimi and the family”

Clive joined Maiden in 1979, drumming on the band’s first three, classic albums, 1980′s Iron Maiden, ’81 follow-up Killers and landmark album, 1982′s The Number Of The Beast. Clive was also a member of Bruce Dickinson’s pre-Maiden band, Samson.

It goes without saying that everyone here at Hammer would like to extend our deepest condolences to Clive’s family, friends and his former bandmates at this time. RIP, sir.

Phil Anselmo: going solo

Pantera and Down legend Phil Anselmo has posted two new solo tracks online! Both Conflict and Family, Friends will appear on Phil’s upcoming split EP with Texan thrashers Warbeast, War Of The Gargantuas.

Check out the tracks over at Amazon.

“This split is a glimpse into the future of both my solo project and ultimate thrash metallers Warbeast,” says our Phil.

“The title of the split is War Of The Gargantuas and it is fitting on many levels because of our combined love for the ’60s Japanese film of the same name, the power of our combined musical output(s) and our humorous affection that plays out within each of our ‘Gargantuan’ personalities.

“Both Warbeast and myself have full-length LPs that will be released shortly after this is released, but this split is unique musically. It is a time capsule; a loud pause ’til we both release our full-length products. Enjoy the destruction of music!”

We are all very happy for Jason and wife Heather for such great news and their future in becoming great parents to likely two very talented children.

“Unfortunately with this great news we regret to inform you all that Jason will be stepping down as a member of the Unnkempt family to uphold his responsibilities as both a father and husband. Jason will, without a doubt, be very sorely missed. Now for some good news for you, the reader. This open position needs someone to fill it…and it could be you.

Paul Gray: Legend

It’s been two years since we lost a brother, an icon and a true defender of our world, and we still can’t quite believe he’s gone.

Slipknot bassist Paul Gray’s sudden and tragic passing on May 24, 2010 shocked all of us, and the support and love shown by fans around the world towards Slipknot themselves in the time since has been overwhelming, and perhaps surmised beautifully by the two-minute silence that fell upon the afternoon of Sonisphere 2011 before Slipknot’s moving and extremely poignant set a few hours later.

Hammer would like to join everyone in taking a few moments to remember Paul and send all our love and thoughts to his family, friends and band members’ way.

RIP Paul Gray. We miss you, dude.
