David E. Gehlke of DeadRhetoric.com recently conducted an interview with FATES WARNING vocalist Ray Alder. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

DeadRhetoric.com: The band has been active on the live front since the release of “X”, but did it ever cross your mind that as a recording entity, FATES WARNING may never record another album?

Ray Alder: Yeah, it definitely crossed my mind. People were doing their side-projects all over the place, and it was never discussed or anything that “We might not get around to doing another album, it’s been so long.” It was always in the back of my mind that we would, though. Jim [Matheos, guitar] and I are pretty proud in that way and don’t want to just fade away. I knew we’d get around to do another album, it was just a matter of when. All of these fucking side-projects, but here we are now and I’m completely happy.

DeadRhetoric.com: You had a stretch where REDEMPTION was your main thing, obviously.

Alder: I think I did four albums with REDEMPTION. Jim was doing OSI, and they seemed like his main thing. It was never meant to be that way, but I had the opportunity to tour and record with REDEMPTION and I don’t want to sit around and do nothing.

DeadRhetoric.com: There’s been a lot of patience from your fanbase. You haven’t totally fallen off the map. There’s genuine interest in another FATES WARNING record. Did that help with getting the album together?

Alder: I think it’s nice and great. We never completely went away, and even if we weren’t touring the States, we were touring in Europe. We’d always go over there and do a few shows and do three-week tours — maybe subconsciously so people wouldn’t forget about us over there. [laughs] Our European fans knew that we were always around; it was American fans that probably feel a little left out. It’s nothing personal – it’s a lot harder to tour in America than in Europe. Everything is so far away and expensive, while in Europe, shows are usually no more than four or five hours away.

DeadRhetoric.com: Going back, you joined the band in ’88, so that’s 25 years. The storyline of you replacing [John] Arch is well-known at least from his vantage point, but how about yours?

Alder: I remember being completely intimidated and scared. I was a young kid. They were my favorite band in the world and I had never even left Texas and the only reason I left was to go to Connecticut to audition with those guys. I remember getting off the plane and having dinner…it was the weirdest thing ever, scary. I got through it and did a good job, and [Metal Blade‘s] Brian Slagel came in and I remember thinking, “Oh God, Brian Slagel!” Now, we’re great friends. It was exciting and new, and I had no idea where it was going to go, but I didn’t care. It’s funny because music wasn’t my dream — I was just doing it in local bands, but once I started, it was amazing.

DeadRhetoric.com: Do you remember what songs you auditioned with?

Alder: “Quietus”, a part of the from “Beyond The Ivory Gates”. I remember I recorded that on a four-track.

DeadRhetoric.com: Your voice back then was so high…

Alder: [laughs] It was so ridiculous. I was trying to do the John Arch thing, and that was the ’80s — everybody was doing it, so I thought it should do it too. As I got older, and before my voice started to change, I just didn’t want to sing high anymore. Chris Cornell, he can sing high now and he doesn’t sound silly to me. It’s not operatic; it’s screaming… I love his voice. Then you have other singers (mimics falsetto)…

DeadRhetoric.com: See, you still got it in you.

Alder: I think my voice has changed because I didn’t want to be over the top; probably because of the cigarettes and booze. [laughs]

FATES WARNING‘s eleventh studio album, “Darkness In A Different Light”, will be released in North America on October 1 via InsideOut Music.

Featuring founding guitarist Jim Matheos alongside classic-lineup members Ray Alder (vocals) and Frank Aresti (guitar), longtime bassist Joey Vera and drummer Bobby Jarzombek, “Darkness In A Different Light” was produced by Matheos and mixed by longtime FATES WARNING engineer Phil Magnotti. The effort was mastered by Maor Appelbaum (YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, SEPULTURA, ANVIL) at Maor Appelbaum Mastering in California. The cover artwork was designed by Conte di San Pietro.

In addition to the standard CD jewel case and the digital download format, “Darkness In A Different Light” will be available in Europe as 2CD mediabook edition and as gatefold 2LP version (180-gram vinyl in black, red or white vinyl) with four bonus tracks.

“Darkness In A Different Light” track listing:

Regarding the song “Firefly”, Alder said: “‘Firefly’ is very personal to me in more ways than one….

“After I had written the melody for this song, I knew immediately what the title was going to be, as well as the subject; it just fit the mood.

“As for the subject, I’m pretty sure we’ve all felt this way at one time or another.

“Sometimes things just don’t work out the way you think they would, but that’s okay, that’s part of life… We move on. Ironically, while recording ‘Firefly’ in New Hampshire, I was outside the studio late one night, and there they were, floating through the trees in the forest! I hadn’t seen a single firefly for at least fifteen years since I had left my hometown of San Antonio, Texas, so I kinda took it as a sign. A sign of what, I don’t know… But very ironic nonetheless…”

On the topic of “Darkness In A Different Light” as a whole, Alder said: “‘Darkness In A Different Light’ is the result of almost two years of very hard work from everyone in the band.

“I believe that this lineup is the best that FATES WARNING has ever had, and I also think that it comes through in the music on this album.

“It’s been almost nine years since our last studio album and I couldn’t be more proud of what we’ve accomplished here.

“We are looking very much forward to playing some new songs for our fans who have stuck by us over all these years.

“We plan on touring as much as possible for ‘Darkness In A Different Light’ and hopefully we’ll hit a few places we’ve never been.”

FATES WARNING will embark on a North American tour in November. The trek will launch November 15 in Joliet, Illinois and wrap December 14 in Seattle, Washington.

Fates Warning have been the rock on which heavier progressive music was founded since their inception in 1982, and show no signs of slowing down with their 2013 release Darkness In A Different Light. To put it plainly, Darkness In A Different Light is everything older Fates Warning fans would want in a record without repeating …

Acclaimed drummer Bobby Jarzombek (HALFORD, RIOT, SEBASTIAN BACH, FATES WARNING) has finished laying down drum tracks for 12 songs on the new solo album from former SKID ROW singer Sebastian Bach. The CD is being recorded at a Los Angeles studio with producer Bob Marlette (BLACK SABBATH, ALICE COOPER), who helmed Bach‘s last solo CD, 2011’s “Kicking & Screaming”.

A short video message from the studio can be seen below.

Says Bach: “We have a special bass player playing on this record, but we’re not allowed to say who it is yet, because he’s so important. But every one of you know who he is. And stay tuned for the announcement on who’s playing the bass in your face.”

The guitars on Bach‘s new album will be performed by Devin Bronson (AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK) and Steve Stevens (BILLY IDOL). There will also be songwriting contributions from guitarist John 5 (ROB ZOMBIE, ex-MARILYN MANSON), who co-wrote the song “TunnelVision” on “Kicking & Screaming”. Making a guest appearance on the CD will be bassist Duff McKagan (DUFF MCKAGAN’S LOADED, VELVET REVOLVER, GUNS N’ ROSES).

Bach previously stated about his new material: “It is going to be balls-out, kick-ass rock ‘n’ roll with tons of vocal histrionics and harmonies especially… I am going to really concentrate on harmonies and pushing my voice to the maximum you have ever heard it pushed. The riffs are crazy and cool.”

Asked if he feels “Kicking & Screaming” got enough credit from the rock community and the fans, Bach told “The Classic Metal Show” in a recent interview: “Yeah. To be on the Billboard chart again is enough credit for me. I like being on the chart. It’s cool that I can put out an album that competes on the charts in this day and age.

He added: “I’m not trying to remind anybody of the past; that’s the opposite of what I’m trying to do. I never was doing that.

“I don’t understand the nostalgia factor of rock and roll fans at all. When SKID ROW came out in 1989, we weren’t singing songs that were 20 years old, we were singing songs that we just wrote. That’s what I’m doing today; that’s what I was doing then. So I don’t get that whole idea at all.”

Bach‘s brand new CD/DVD package, “ABachalypse Now”, was released in North America on March 26 via Frontiers Records. The “ABachalypse Now” Ultimate CD/DVD Edition includes never-before-seen footage from last year’s Graspop Metal Meeting festival in Dessel, Belgium, the full never-before-seen Hellfest set from France and the fully-remixed and remastered Nokia show from Los Angeles (originally broadcast on AXS TV), as well as bonus music videos. The DVD contains a running time of nearly 160 minutes. “ABachalypse Now” was made available in two configurations: the Ultimate CD/DVD Edition (2 CDs + DVD) and a standalone DVD.

Asked by Italian web radio Linearock.it in a June 2012 interview what the reason is for the frequent lineup changes in his solo band, Bach said, “It’s a very easy answer. It’s all to do with finance. If you get paid a certain amount of money, you can’t pay to play… If I tell a guy in my band, ‘This is what we’re getting. We all have to split it.’ Some guys will be like, ‘Fuck that!’ And I’m like, ‘You know what?! Bye!’ [laughs] ‘Cause it’s a business. When you see me change bandmembers, it’s usually a business decision.”

Veteran Los Angeles metallers ARMORED SAINT have commenced the songwriting process for the follow-up to 2010’s “La Raza” for a tentative late 2014 release via Metal Blade Records.

Speaking to Metal Assault earlier this month, ARMORED SAINT bassist Joey Vera stated about the band’s plans for the next CD: “We decided that we didn’t want to wait another ten years to make a new record [laughs], so we’re trying to work this out as a group. John [Bush, vocals] and I started working on some songs in February this year and I got a bunch of stuff that came out really quick and we wrote a few songs in February-March, but then I had to kind of put it on the back burner because I got involved with several mixing projects and then, of course, the FATES WARNING, which took up a lot of my time, learning the material and then obviously recording that. The FATES WARNING record is finally done and is coming out in the U.S. this fall, but John and I resumed writing in early July and we have a good chunk of songs now. We’ve got about five that are done, and another six that are almost finished. So we’ve just got to get back to it and our goal is to try and get this finished before 2018 [laughs]. In a perfect world, it would be great if we could have the album out by fall of 2014. It’s not set in stone yet, but that’s what we’re shooting for right now.”

Fan-filmed video footage of ARMORED SAINT‘s August 16 performance at Paladino’s in Reseda, California at a benefit show for drummer Dave Brown (ex-SOUND BARRIER, MASI, TOTAL ECLIPSE), who is battling cancer, can be seen below.

“La Raza” sold around 2,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 18 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200. “La Raza” also entered the German Media Control chart at No. 96 and the Canadian Independent chart at No. 85.

The classic first EP from ARMORED SAINT was reissued on August 13, 2012 in Europe via Metal Blade Records with bonus tracks and etching on vinyl.
