The classic lineup of U.K. death metallers CANCERJohn Walker (guitar, vocals), Carl Stokes, Ian Buchanan (bass) and Barry Savage (lead guitar) — will reform to promote their first three albums which are being re-released by Cyclone Empire Records later this year. The band plans to make a number of festival appearances during which they will play songs from these first three albums only.

CANCER in 2005 released a “comeback” studio album, entitled “Spirit In Flames”, on the Copro label. The group’s first full-length studio album (fifth overall) since 1995’s “Black Faith” was recorded over a three-week period at Philia studios in Henley on Thames, England. An EP, entitled “Corporation$”, preceded the “Spirit In Flames” CD and was also released through Copro. Included on the effort was the group’s cover version of the CELTIC FROST classic “Dethroned Emperor”.

CANCER‘s most recent lineup included Stokes, Walker, bassist Adam Richardson, and guitarist Dave Leitch (PULVERISED). Leitch replaced Rob Engvikson in 2004 after Rob left the group to focus on his long-running ASATRU project.

CANCER split up in 2006 “due to the lack of comitment to the band from John Walker,” according to a statement released at the time by Carl Stokes.

Jeff Keller Management LLC, the management company for FLOTSAM AND JETSAM and HIRAX, has announced that due to circumstances beyond the bands’ and management’s control, the “Metal Apocalypse” European tour that was scheduled to feature both artists has been canceled.

Says Jeff Keller: “Unfortunately, it was in both bands’ best interest to not continue with the tour at this time. We apologize to the fans for this unfortunate circumstance, and I can assure the fans that both bands will be in Europe in 2014 for other touring and festival appearances.”

FLOTSAM AND JETSAM recently returned to Metal Blade Records to release their new album, “Ugly Noise”.

“Ugly Noise” is FLOTSAM AND JETSAM‘s eleventh full-length album, their first release on Metal Blade since 2001, and the follow-up to their 2010 album “The Cold”. The record also heralds the return of original members Michael Gilbert on guitar and Kelly David Smith, who hadn’t recorded with FLOTSAM AND JETSAM since “High” in 1997.

Funding for the new FLOTSAM AND JETSAM album was aided by the project, which encourages fans to contribute funds to the recording of albums and the artists themselves to donate to charity as a part of their fundraising.

HIRAX will release its new album, “Immortal Legacy”, on October 22 (six days later in Europe) via SPV/Steamhammer. It will be made available as a CD, gatefold colored LP and a digital download.

Philip Lawvere, the artist behind such classic album covers as KREATOR‘s “Pleasure To Kill” and CELTIC FROST‘s “Emperor’s Return”, has designed the “Immortal Legacy” cover. Lawvere had done stunning illustrations for numerous albums and is best known for a slew of thrash metal offerings released on Noise Records.

Norwegian black metallers EMPEROR will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their “In The Nightside Eclipse” album by making a number of festival appearances next year. In addition to performing at Germany’s Wacken Open Air, the band will headline the 2014 edition of the the Bloodstock Open Air festival, set to take place next August at Catton Hall, Walton-On-Trent, West Midlands, United Kingdom. EMPEROR members Ihsahn (real name: Vegard Sverre Tveitan) and Samoth (real name: Tomas Haugen) will be joined by Bård Guldvik “Faust” Eithun on drums, and they will perform the CD in its entirety. There will be no new studio album or a worldwide tour — only a few exclusive festival appearances next year to mark the celebration of this landmark release.

Speaking with U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine, lhsahn explained how this new reunion came to pass. “Me and Samoth were talking and the 20th anniversary of ‘…Eclipse’ came up,” he said.

“It’s no secret that I’ve been reluctant to do the reunion stuff, because I want to be clear on my priorities as a solo artist.

“People ask us for EMPEROR shows all the time, and as a fan I can relate to that sort of nostalgia, but I’m much more involved in my current work. But now that I feel I’ve established a more solid foundation for my solo stuff, it was easier for me to appreciate the thought of celebrating this album that was such an important starting point for us.”

Ihsahn‘s fifth solo album, “Das Seelenbrechen”, will be released in Nort America on October 21 via Candlelight Records. The CD is described in a press release as “a bold and adventurous recording that is a musical contrast to the progressive shades and saxophone augmentations of the EMPEROR vocalist/guitarist’s previous two albums (2009’s ‘After’ and 2011’s ‘Eremita’). The album is every bit as dark and destructive as the artist’s previous work but is far more disorientating and disturbing than anything he has attempted in his past.”

“In the beginning of my solo career, I created more of a barrier between EMPEROR and my solo work,” Ihsahn told Metal Hammer. “But over the last few albums, I’ve been able to tap into more and more of that old black metal feeling. It’s such a fundamental part of my creative self. Even if the arrangements and form of my music are very different these days, I feel the source in its pure form is very much the same as when I first started out.”

He added: “When EMPEROR play at [the festivals around the world] next year, I want to be able to tap into that and perform those old songs with the same conviction and authenticity as before.”

The news of EMPEROR‘s appearance at Wacken Open Air was announced on August 2 at this year’s edition of the festival at a press conference which was attended by Ihsahn and Samoth.

EMPEROR released its swansong, “Prometheus – The Discipline Of Fire And Demise”, in September 2001. It was an epic and progressive metal album that once and for all marked EMPEROR as one of the most adventurous and gifted black metal bands of all times. In 2005, EMPEROR surprised all with an unannounced appearance at Oslo’s famed Inferno festival. Following the performance, the band announced additional concerts that would include a visit to America; marking the second trip to the States in the band’s legendary career. Fans flocked to New York City and Los Angeles to witness the sold-out performances. In 2007, additional shows would see the band return to the U.S. for a repeat performance in New York City, a stop in Chicago, and what would be their final American performance in Los Angeles.

The event was also a tribute to the founding DARK FUNERAL member David “Blackmoon” Parland, who died earlier this year. Blackmoon left DARK FUNERAL in 1996 after the release of “The Secrets Of The Black Arts”, but will always remain an import part of DARK FUNERAL‘s legacy.

AEROSMITH has canceled its two previously scheduled festival gigs in the Far East — Wednesday, August 21 in Shanghai and Saturday, August 24 in Taipei — due to the local promoters’ failure to “meet contractual obligations.”

AEROSMITH was supposed to make its Chinese live debut at the outdoor Shanghai Hongkou Stadium. The venue has a capacity of 25,000 people.

We were so excited to share our music with them and look forward to one day returning and giving them the show they deserve.”

“We’re disappointed as we wanted to play for our fans,” added AEROSMITH guitarist Joe Perry. “We’ve looked forward to this for a lifetime.”

“It’s always been a dream of ours to play in Shanghai and Taipei, and meet our fans there,” said AEROSMITH bassist Tom Hamilton says. “We were really looking forward to visiting Shanghai and Taipei and playing for our fans there and are very disappointed that these two shows have been cancelled.”

“I’m disappointed we weren’t able to play for our fans in China. However, the circumstances were beyond our control,” stated AEROSMITH drummer Joey Kramer. “I sincerely hope AEROSMITH will get another opportunity to come back to Shanghai and Taiwan to play for our many fans there.”
