Following in the footsteps of Pat Benatar/Neil Giraldo and Buckingham/Nicks but with a decidedly more funky and progressive edge, the new project from former MEGADETH guitarist Jeff Young and Las Vegas-bred vocalist/dancer Sherri Klein is poised to release its very first single, a re-imagined rendition of THE ROLLING STONES“Wild Horses”. This epic re-rendering of a rock and roll classic also features the considerable talents of Brian Tichy (WHITESNAKE, FOREIGNER, BILLY IDOL) on drums and Ric Fierabracci (STEVIE WONDER, BILLY COBHAM, SHAKIRA) on fretless bass. The track was produced by Young and recorded and mixed at the plush new Vegas View Recording by Bobby Ferrari.

Video footage of Young and Klein performing an acoustic cover version of VAN HALEN‘s classic track “Little Dreamer” as part of their first Stageit show can be seen below.

Jeff‘s entire career with MEGADETH was spent recording and touring in support of the band’s 1988 platinum-selling album “So Far, So Good…So What!”

More awesome new music coming your way this week!

After an immense London Scala show and a mixed reception at Reading soon after, it’s time to let the music do the talking. Nine Inch Nails release their new album Hesitation Marks today, although with the album streaming in full last week, a lot of you will have perhaps already formed opinions on the first new NIN album since 2008′s The Slip. Nonetheless, it represents a brand new start for an outfit which Trent once said were gone for good, so where he takes the band from here on in is anyone’s guess.

In a whole different world comes the new album from Finnish battle metal warriors, Turisas. The curiously-named Turisas2013 is evidently a stab at a bold new direction for the band, but fear not – there’s still plenty of gung ho lyricism, soaring, galloping melodies and big hooks.

If running around waving swords about isn’t your think, you might be interested in Turisas’ Century Media labelmates and djent innovators, The Safety Fire. The techy Londoners’ second album, Mouth Of Swords, will look to follow in the footsteps of 2012′s critically-acclaimed Grind The Ocean.

Finally, there’s also a long-awaited new album from Vista Chino – AKA The Artists Formerly Known As Kyuss Lives! – AKA The Artists Formerly Known As Kyuss. Can Garcia’s crew live up to the legacy of those timeless, genre-defining classics? This week, the world will find out…

What new release are you most pumped about this week? Let us know.

Wanderers of the progosphere rejoice because the universe’s supreme festival of all that is cosmic, leftfield, riff-filled and a bit stoned, Roadburn, has announced that next year’s curator is to be none other than Opeth mainman, Mikael Åkerfeldt.

Following in the footsteps of Electic Wizard, Triptykon’s Tom G Fischer and Sunn O))), Mikael will be personally selecting a number of bands to play at the festival for one day, which will be headlined by Opeth themselves. The festival as a whole takes place at the 013 venue in Tilburg from April 10-13, 2014.

Says Mikael: “It’s with great honour that I accepted the invitation to be the curator for the 2014 Roadburn festival. I’m pretty damn far from being a professional booker/promoter and I’ve never been part in choosing bands for an event apart from bands that Opeth has toured with. So this is a first for me, but I have to say I’m very excited.”

“I’ve reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present,” he continues. “As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I’m going to be like a kid at Xmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously Opeth will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn’t get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. It will be remarkable and memorable. A celebration, bitches!”

Also just announced for the festival are two ghouls from the darkest corner of the Relapse Records stable: blackened soundcape specialists Locrian, and occultic outriders True Widow. They’ll be joining the likes of new doom kids on the chopping block, Conan and psych rock legends Loop. Happy daze!

Guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH has agreed to curate Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday, April 11 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. As curator, Mikael will personally select the bands for his special event, and play a headline show with OPETH, too!

OPETH‘s body of work is highly respected by Roadburn audiences, which makes Mikael the ideal choice to carry on the tradition that began in 2008 with David Tibet of CURRENT 93, and continued with NEUROSIS, Tom G. Warrior, SUNN 0))), VOIVOD and Jus Oborn of ELECTRIC WIZARD.

“It’s with great honor that I accepted the invitation to be the curator for the 2014 Roadburn festival”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt. “I’m pretty damn far from being a professional booker/promoter, and I’ve never been part in choosing bands for an event apart from bands that OPETH has toured with. So this is a first for me, but I have to say I’m very excited.”

He continued: “I’ve reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present. As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I’m going to be like a kid at Christmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously, OPETH will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn’t get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. It will be remarkable and memorable. A celebration, bitches!”

Beginning a new chapter of their ongoing legacy, Bristol’s psych rock band THE HEADS will follow in the footsteps of ENSLAVED, CIRCLE, Justin K Broadrick and Neige (ALCEST) as Artist In Residence at the 2014 Roadburn Festival.

Roadburn is THE HEADS‘ spiritual home, and they are honoured to be asked to be the Artist in Residence and are excited to have John McBain (of MONSTER MAGNET fame) join them for this and new recordings.

As part of the Artist in Residence, KANDODO will perform as a three-piece on Friday, April 11. THE HEADS will play a live set for the first time with John McBain on Saturday, April 12 at the Main Stage.

Holland’s very own Roadburn Festival has become Europe’s leading festival for psychedelic, avant-metal, doom, heavy ’70s or any other variation of leftfield sonic pleasures that push the boundaries of music.

Roadburn Festival 2014 (including Mikael Åkerfeldt‘s curated event, OPETH and LOOP) will run for four days — from Thursday, April 10 to Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Pre-sales will start Friday, October 11, 2013.
