KILLER BE KILLED, the new band comprised of Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, ex-SEPULTURA), Greg Puciato (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN), Troy Sanders (MASTODON) and Dave Elitch (ex-THE MARS VOLTA), will release its self-titled debut album on May 13 (one day earlier internationally) via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The CD was produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur, whose credits include work with GOJIRA, LAMB OF GOD, HATEBREED, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ESCAPE THE FATE, P!NK and STEVE EARLE. Cover art and packaging was executed by Ryan Clark of Invisible Creature Design, the Grammy-nominated design firm whose clients include ALICE IN CHAINS, FOO FIGHTERS, CHRIS CORNELL, DEVILDRIVER, MONSTER MAGNET, WOLFMOTHER and DEMON HUNTER.

“He’s a Polish worker in the back of a dark truck, but he looked like a criminal to me,” explains Clark about his choice for the cover’s image. “Multiplying his face seemed to give him a sort of split personality/schizophrenic vibe, which feels like a good mesh. Not just for the band name but the idea of a (for the lack of a better term) supergroup.”

“Killer Be Killed” track listing:

01. Wings Of Feather And Wax
02. Face Down
03. Melting Of My Marrow
04. Snakes of Jehova
05. Curb Crusher
06. Save The Robots
07. Fire To Your Flag
08. I.E.D.
09. Dust Into Darkness
10. Twelve Labors
11. Forbidden Fire
12. Ghosts Of Chernobyl (vinyl-only bonus track)

The songs “Wings Of Feather And Wax” and “Face Down” can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

MetalSucks placed Puciato at #1 on their list of the Top 25 Modern Metal Frontmen, but he also expresses himself through the dark electro-pop of THE BLACK QUEEN, together with NINE INCH NAILS touring guitarist Josh Eustis of TELEFON TEL AVIV and Maynard James Keenan‘s PUSCIFER. Puciato made a guest appearance in 2012 with MIXHELL, the DJ project of Max‘s brother, SEPULTURA co-founder Igor Cavalera.

Cavalera is no stranger to collaborations, of course, having invited multiple guests onto SEPULTURA‘s genre-defining “Roots” and SOULFLY‘s gold-selling debut album in 1998. One such SOULFLY guest, Chino Moreno, has often joined Puciato onstage with both THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and DEFTONES. Max was one-half of the incendiary NAILBOMB, together with English record producer and FUDGE TUNNEL mastermind Alex Newport. The pair released one studio album in 1993 and performed a blistering set at the Dynamo festival in 1995.

“We did the song on SOULFLY‘s ‘Omen’ and then we started talking about doing an entire album together, the way he had with Alex Newport,” Puciato explains. “We eventually got together with some riffs we both had and wrote a bunch more material in a 72-hour blast out in the desert. We left with about 15 demos we made using the same drum machine and four track Max used working on ‘Chaos A.D.’

Cognizant of the reputation both of them have cultivated after working with some of the world’s best drummers, Puciato called upon David Elitch, who had toured internationally with the mind-bendingly psychedelic group THE MARS VOLTA. His expertise in everything from jazz to metal has led to live and studio collaborations with a diverse range of major artists including Justin Timberlake, French electronic wizards M83 and Norwegian singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfør.

KILLER BE KILLED has come together even as their main projects hit a collective stride: Max just released his ninth studio album with SOULFLY, “Savages”, to many of the strongest reviews of his legendary career. THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN‘s “One Of Us Is The Killer” debuted at #1 on Billboard‘s Hard Rock Album chart earlier this year. MASTODON‘s most recent album, “The Hunter”, was Album Of The Year in Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Classic Rock, Terrorizer and Total Guitar in 2011.

MASTODON and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have toured together many times. During one such tour in the U.S., in late 2011, Puciato was telling Sanders about the new project. Before too long, Sanders and Cavalera were meeting at a festival in South America for the first time: “Hey, I’m Troy. And I think we’re in a band together.”

The electric chemistry was apparent the first time they all assembled. “Having met, created and recorded an album together, this experience has easily exceeded my initial expectations,” says Sanders. “The collective energy and mutual respect for one another eased the entire process and has been very therapeutic for me.”

Max Cavalera, Troy Sanders, Greg Puciato and Dave Elitch officially enter the studio.

It's been almost a year since we've discussed the supergroup featuring Soulfly's Max Cavalera, The Dillinger Escape Plan's Greg Puciato and Mastodon's Troy Sanders. We initially broke the story when Puciato revealed to us that the project was in the works. We've written a lot about it in the past, but it's been about a year since any news surfaced. All three of …

The as-yet-unnamed project featuring Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, ex-SEPULTURA), THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN frontman Greg Puciato, Dave Elitch (ex-THE MARS VOLTA) and Troy Sanders (MASTODON) has entered Fortress Studio in Los Angeles, California with producer Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD, GOJIRA) to begin recording its debut album for a 2014 release.

Talking to U.K.’s Terrorizer magazine en route to the studio yesterday, Max said: “It’s going to be cool. We just don’t have a name yet. The name is a pain in the ass to find a name, but the music is great. We have been working on this for two years.

He continued: “Greg approached me kinda like how Alex [Newport; FUDGE TUNNEL] approached me to do NAILBOMB in that he was really, really trying to get me to do this project. I told him already I was pretty busy doing SOULFLY and CAVALERA CONSPIRACY [and] I was not really looking for an extra thing, but he was pretty insistent and then I just gave up and was, like, ‘Let’s fucking do this!’

“It started with just me and Greg and then we got Dave Elitch — he’s an amazing drummer — and then Greg knew Troy and we asked him to be the bassist so it kind of became a supergroup all of a sudden. We jammed a couple of times and the last jam we did it sounded killer; the songs are really powerful real heavy. It’s hard to describe but I think the coolest thing about this project is that all three of us are going to sing on every song.”

Earlier this year, Puciato told Noisecreep about how the project started: “We were at a DEFTONES show in L.A. at the Palladium and we were talking backstage about old thrash metal, punk and hardcore and we found ourselves referencing many of the same things and we were like, ‘Fuck, man, we should make a record together and do it as a one-off like NAILBOMB.’ A month later, I talked to Max again and he said we should actually do that.

“No one in metal makes collaborative records like people in jazz and hip-hop do. It doesn’t have to be like a band that you’re launching from the ground that you go on tour with. There is something to be said for collaboration and throwing yourself out there and learning something new from working with different people. Dave was a buddy of mine already and he’s a phenomenal drummer. He was the first person I thought of to play drums.

“We [DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN] spent a lot of time touring with MASTODON and Troy seemed like a really obvious fit. We had a really easy time writing. We can’t release it right behind the DILLINGER record and we also have to figure out when the MASTODON record is coming out and the same for whatever Max is doing next. It’s going to come out. It’s just going to be a matter of logistics as to when.”

Greg (far left) with TDEP

We chat to The Dillinger Escape Plan‘s mic-toting powerhouse Greg Puciato in our new issue about expensive purchases, getting in scraps, weird drug trips and, of course, pooing on festival stages.

Have a read through some of the madness below…

How do you feel about being remembered for shitting on the main stage at Reading in 2002?

“It’s a fairly extreme thing to do, so I get it that people who aren’t more versed in music, that’s the one thing they remember. But who cares? If you do something that extreme in front of that many people, what do you expect?”

What’s the most expensive thing you’ve ever bought yourself?

“The same thing most people buy – a house and a car. I bought a Lamborghini with a solid gold dick on it.”

What’s the worst fight you’ve ever been in?

“I’m an adult, I have no motivation to be in a fight. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone, I’ve been hit in the face with enough guitars that I don’t need to get punched by another dude to test myself.”

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen while high?

“I thought Ben [Weinman] and I were the same person. I had a major, major breakdown of my perception of myself as an individual and I saw people as being like a big gas cloud, and every person is a bubble in that gas cloud. And if the bubble pops you’ll die and you’ll just return to the gas. So it’s insane that people have this concept of ego and individuality to the point where they start to block out everyone else, because we’re actually the same person.”

Of course! Well, we think so. Maybe. Anyway, read more from that and a hell of a lot more in our new issue, out now, alright?

Latest TDEP album One Of Us Is The Killer is out now.
