Tuomas Holopainen — the keyboardist and main songwriter of NIGHTWISH — recently answered ten questions for Sweden’s Rocksverige web site. You can now watch the question-and-answer session below.

Holopainen spent most of 2013 writing and producing his solo album based on a graphic novel called “The Life And Times Of Scrooge McDuck”, written and illustrated by Don Rosa.

“Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge – Written And Produced By Tuomas Holopainen” is scheduled for release on April 11 via Nuclear Blast.

“Music Inspired By The Life And Times Of Scrooge – Written And Produced By Tuomas Holopainen” contains 10 songs, with total duration of approximately 60 minutes. The music is said to be in the soundtrack / classical / folk genre in the vein of Vaughan Williams, Michael Nyman, James Newton Howard and Enya.

Pip Williams did the orchestral arrangements for the “Life And Times Of Scrooge” disc, continuing his collaboration with Tuomas after the NIGHTWISH records “Once”, “Dark Passion Play” and “Imaginaerum”.

There are a number of guest musicians appearing on “Life And Times Of Scrooge”, including the London Orchestra, The Metro Voices (a choir from London) and four lead vocalists: Alan Reid, Johanna Kurkela, Johanna Iivanainen and Tony Kakko. Other guest appearances include Troy Donockley (uilleann pipes, low whistles, bodhran), Mikko Iivanainen (guitars and banjo), Teho Majamäki (didgeridoo), Jon Burr (harmonica) and Dermot Crehan on the solo violin.

The recordings took place during August – October 2013, first at Angel Studios in London, then in various locations around Scotland and Finland.

San Francisco Bay Area Veteran metallers VICIOUS RUMORS have tapped 21-year-old Dutch singer Nick Holleman (POWERIZED) to handle lead vocals on their current U.S. tour with SEVEN WITCHES. Holleman replaces the most recent VICIOUS RUMORS singer Brian Allen, who missed this past spring’s European tour and Bang Your Head!!! festival appearance in Germany due to what was described by the band in an April 2013 statement as “sudden family matters.”

A photo of Nick Holleman performinig with VICIOUS RUMORS can be seen above (picture courtesy of SEVEN WITCHES‘ official Facebook page).

VICIOUS RUMORS‘ new album, “Electric Punishment”, was released on April 29 in Europe and May 7 in U.S./Canada via Steamhammer/SPV.

Guitarist Geoff Thorpe, Brian Allen, bassist Stephen Goodwin and drummer Larry Howe were supported during the new CD recording sessions by guitarist Thean Rasmussen, who returned to the VICIOUS RUMORS fold after “Razorback Killers”. In addition, Thorpe & Co. invited a number of former allies to the studio as guest musicians: Brad Gillis features on “D-Block”, “Together We Unite” and “Eternally”, Marc McGhee on “Escape (From Hell)”, and last but not least, tour guitarist Bob Capka helped out at the studio with a number of rhythm guitars and a haunting solo on “D-Block”. Thorpe said: “I had a few problems with my fingers; that’s why I was glad that Bob was there to help. Otherwise, it probably wouldn’t have been possible to stick to our tight production schedule.”

VICIOUS RUMORS released a live album, “Live You To Death”, on November 27, 2012 through SPV/Steamhammer. The CD was recorded by Pontus Norgren of HAMMERFALL, mixed by Juan Urteaga and produced by VICIOUS RUMORS guitarist Geoff Thorpe.

Guitarist/vocalist Michael Sweet of Christian hard rockers STRYPER was recently interviewed by his mother, Janice Sweet. You can now watch the chat below.

STRYPER‘s new album, “No More Hell To Pay”, will be released on November 5 in North America via Frontiers Records. The effort will be made available in two formats — standard CD and deluxe digipak featuring exclusive video content. Produced by Michael Sweet himself, the set features some of STRYPER‘s strongest and heaviest material ever.

Michael‘s new solo album will be issued via Big3 Records. Guest musicians set to appear on the CD include CHICKENFOOT drummer Kenny Aronoff, FOZZY singer Chris Jericho, WHITESNAKE guitarist Doug Aldrich; Tony Harnell of TNT, and Michael‘s brother Robert Sweet and STRYPER‘s Timothy Gaines. The 12-song solo record will be accompanied by the STRYPER frontman’s autobiography, “Honestly”, the writing of which he said was “much more difficult than I could ever imagine yet it’s been somewhat therapeutic being able to talk about my life and the past 30+ years of all things STRYPER.” He added: “I get into everything and share things that may surprise you. I talk about the dysfunction in this band, the pain and heartache of being so close to each other that we sometimes hurt each other the most, the ups and downs from our highest point (1987-1988) to our lowest point (1991-1992) and why we were driven to bankruptcy and how we climbed our way back from complete loss and despair. I share my personal pain from considering to give up music altogether to the day I broke the news to the guys that I would be leaving the band and why. From that day forward, I had everything a man could ask for and then, in what seemed like an instant, it was all taken away.”

“The Cause”, a brand new solo song from Michael Sweet of Christian hard rockers STRYPER, can be streamed using the audio player below.

Says Michael: “For one day only (the next 24 hours), I’m posting this streaming, full-length version of a brand new song from my new solo record, due out next year, in honor of today [9/11] and the days ahead. I hope this song inspires you and reminds you of how strong we are as people and that we can overcome any adversity or trial that we are faced with. God bless you, guys, and united we stand for ‘The Cause’.”

“The Cause” lyrics:

We’re lost, we’re found – we’re free, we’re bound
We’re high, we’re low and in between we’re shy – we’re bold
We stand, we fall – we move, we stall
We laugh, we cry, but in the end we live – we die

(Chorus)

Oh, we have a soul, we have a heart that we can show
We’re here for The Cause, bigger then life, this one we know

We sit, we stand – we’re small, we’re grand
We trust, we fear, one day we’re blind then all is clear

(Chorus)

Oh, we have a soul, we have a heart that we can show
We’re here for The Cause, bigger then life, this one we know

Michael‘s new solo album will be issued via Big3 Records. Guest musicians set to appear on the CD include CHICKENFOOT drummer Kenny Aronoff, FOZZY singer Chris Jericho, WHITESNAKE guitarist Doug Aldrich; Tony Harnell of TNT, and Michael‘s brother Robert Sweet and STRYPER‘s Timothy Gaines.

A new trailer for SOULFLY‘s ninth album, “Savages”, in which the band’s mainman, Max Cavalera talks about the guest musicians that appear on the CD can be seen below.

“Savages” is scheduled for release on October 4 via the band’s new label home, Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The CD was produced by Terry Date, who is known for his work with such acts as PANTERA, DEFTONES and SOUNDGARDEN, among many others. Guest vocal appearances on “Savages” include SOULFLY bass player Tony Campos, CLUTCH‘s Neil Fallon, NAPALM DEATH‘s Mitch Harris, Jamie Hanks of I DECLARE WAR and Max Cavalera‘s son Igor Cavalera (of LODY KONG).

“Savages” will be released as a limited-edition digpack CD, 2LP vinyl and digital download.

“Savages” track listing:

01. Bloodshed (feat. Igor Cavalera)
02. Cannibal Holocaust
03. Fallen (feat. Jamie Hanks)
04. Ayatollah Of Rock ‘N’ Rolla (feat. Neil Fallon)
05. Master Of Savagery
06. Spiral
07. This Is Violence
08. K.C.S. (feat. Mitch Harris)
09. El Comegente (feat. Tony Campos)
10. Soulfliktion

Limited-edition CD and 2LP vinyl bonus tracks:

11. Fuck Reality
12. Soulfly IX

The official lyric video for“Bloodshed” can be seen below. The track features a guest appearance by Igor Cavalera of LODY KONG.

Comments Max: “The song is about the absurdity of the human condition in territories plagued by bloodshed all over the world. Not just recent events like Iraq, but also historical conflicts such as the U.S. Civil War, World Wars I and II, etc.”

The cover artwork for “Savages” was created by renowned artist Paul Stottler, who is best known for his work on SACRED REICH‘s legendary “Surf Nicaragua” cover.

Date previously mixed SOULFLY‘s “3” (2002), “Prophecy” (2004) and “Dark Ages” (2005) albums, but had never produced any of the group’s CDs.

The drum tracks on the new SOULFLY CD were laid down by Max‘s 21-year-old son, Zyon Cavalera, who joined the band as its touring drummer for its recent rampage through North America.

Zyon previously played with SOULFLY during the band’s tour of Brazil in February 2012.

It is Zyon‘s unborn heartbeat that can be heard during the intro of SEPULTURA‘s classic song “Refuse/Resist”, which appeared on the band’s RIAA-gold-certified “Chaos A.D.” album, released three years before Max‘s departure from the group.

Commented Max Cavalera: “Recording ‘Savages’ was an amazing experience for me. I was so excited to work with Terry Date, whom I consider to be one of the best producers of all time. He has done some great records and we have been in contact for awhile since he mixed three SOULFLY albums in the past. He came to see SOULFLY whenever we played in Seattle, and we finally made it work that he would be the producer for ‘Savages’.

“My teammates were awesome. Marc [Rizzo, guitar] did some crazy guitar noises and we did a ‘Mars Part Two’ at the end of ‘El Comegente’; it’s very LED ZEPPELIN-influenced and Marc kicked some ass on it.

“I wrote ‘El Comegente’ with Tony Campos. It’s in Portuguese and Spanish and it’s about Vargas — a Venezuelan cannibal from the ’80s. He is the Hannibal Lecter of the Andes. Crazy shit!

“I worked for the first time on a full album with my son, Zyon. Before recording the album I first worked closely at home with him in preproduction, and it was great to spend weeks on the songs with Zyon, shaping the sound of the record.

Zyon did a great job and he hits really hard just like his uncle Igor.

“It was amazing recording with my son. A whole record! A dream come true for a father whose life is dedicated to metal. ‘Savages’ is a celebration of all that.”

“Paralysis”, a brand new track from Italian folk metallers KRAMPUS, can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below. The track was produced by Tommy Vetterli (ELUVEITIE, CORONER) and features guest musicians Merlin Sutter and Chrigel Glanzmann of ELUVEITIE on drums and uilleann pipes.

KRAMPUS found its own sound with the new material, mixing modern influences and keeping its unique folk instrumentation alive at the same time — one of only a handful of bands successful in doing so. Not only are they out to upend a whole genre, but they’re taking on old conventions as well. Rather than jumping through hoops to get the necessary financing for a full album production and risking limitations and deadlines, they picked the best of a year’s worth of writing and went on to produce those songs on their own — completely independent from any record label. Taking it another step further, KRAMPUS decided to release their new material to the public just weeks after recording — for free.

Comments the band: “We are extremely excited to share with you ‘Paralysis’, the very first brand new KRAMPUS track, produced with Tommy Vetterli at New Sound Studio just weeks ago and now available to you, for free. We hope you enjoy it and encourage you to play, download, and share however much you like!”
