The Great Southern Brainfart recently conducted an interview with GWAR frontman Oderus Urungus. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

The Great Southern Brainfart: This is an exciting time to be a GWAR fan. After the passing of Flattus Maximus, it was really awesome to see the metal community pull together to support the band and his immediate family. It made me feel proud to be a fan of a band. When you saw that outpouring of love how did it make you feel?

Oderus: Well, it made us feel very proud to have such awesome fans. They weren’t going to let us fail or stop and they were going to support us every step of the way. They all came out and showed us how much they really love us and it really meant a lot to us. We couldn’t have done it without their strength and we may have never made it through that period. There’s not a day that goes by that we don’t miss Flattus but somehow we’ve made it through and Pustulous Maximus is settled in his new position and he’s kicking fucking ass. Life goes on.

The Great Southern Brainfart: What can you tell us about Pustulous Maximus and what can we all expect to see from him?

Oderus: Well, he’s a little bigger than Flattus. He’s a little more obnoxious and meaner. He’s a little more rowdy on stage and he breaks more stuff. His guitar playing is a big more vicious as well. He’s a different player than Flattus. Flattus has a smoother shredding style whereas Pustulous is just all over the fucking place. He’s capable of playing the smooth shit but yet he can play incredibly vicious as well. His sound has definitely taken GWAR into a new direction musically. I’m not exactly sure what that direction is. Maybe even a little more like our old-school thrash metal kind of sound. It definitely doesn’t sound like “Bloody Pit Of Horror”, that’s for sure.

The Great Southern Brainfart: I’ve been listening to the new album, “Battle Maximus”, a good bit and I fucking love this album. It sounds more like the old-school stuff than anything GWAR‘s done in years. Was that intentional or was this brought on by the new blood, pun intended?

Oderus: [laughs] No, it just kind of happened naturally. We just kind of let it kind of rally behind Pustulous‘ playing and we didn’t try to make it go in any direction. We just let it kind of organically suggest itself. That’s the way Pustulous sounds when he plays guitar so there for GWAR followed right along with him. It’s got the sound of those old GWAR albums but it has the additional excellence of the fact that it sounds better. We’ve been in the studio longer and we know what we’re doing now. We’ve got our own studio and we know exactly how to get the best sounds out of it. It’s got that old-school GWAR sound that everyone likes, but it sounds better than all the old records.

The Great Southern Brainfart: Looking back on GWAR‘s vast catalog, is there anything you look at and say, “I wish we would’ve done that differently?”

Oderus: Nah, I wouldn’t change a fucking thing. If you change anything about GWAR, you might ruin something that was incredibly perfect. I’m not really how GWAR started to begin with, but I do know that it’s hard to change or mess around with it very much. You could ruin that balance that made it so great to begin with. I’ve been completely satisfied with everything we’ve done. I wouldn’t change a goddamn thing.

The Great Southern Brainfart: GWAR not too long ago released a great cover of ALICE COOPER‘s “School’s Out”. Are there any future covers that we can look forward to hearing GWAR unleash on us?

Oderus: Right now we are working on a cover of “Get Out of My Dreams, Get Into My Car” by BILLY OCEAN for The AV Club. We did KANSAS“Carry On My Wayward Son” last year, so we’re doing this one this year. Matter of fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if you see an entire GWAR covers album at some point.

North American metallers ICED EARTH will release their new album, “Plagues Of Babylon”, for a January 2014 via Century Media Records. The cover artwork was created and illustrated by Eliran Kantor (TESTAMENT, ATHEIST, SIGH, ANACRUSIS, GWAR).

Says ICED EARTH vocalist/guitarist Jon Schaffer: “This is a seriously heavy album with a seriously brutal album cover. I’m sure it will go down as a classic in the epic ICED EARTH catalog.”

“Plagues Of Babylon” track listing:

01. Plagues Of Babylon
02. Democide
03. The Culling
04. Among The Living Dead
05. Resistance
06. The End?
07. If I Could See You
08. Cthulhu
09. Peacemaker
10. Parasite
11. Spirit Of The Times
12. Highwayman

Speaking to Metal4 magazine at the Rockharz open-air festival in Germany in July, Schaffer said about the upcoming CD: “It’s a bit of a different thing for us, because it’s half of a concept and the other half is [standalone] tracks. Musically, I think it’s just another step in the right direction. It’s really heavy, it’s very melodic. It has a really epic feeling. Even though there isn’t, like, a monster, long epic track, the overall feel of the songs is very epic. I mean, there’s no ‘Dante’s Inferno’ or ‘Gettysburg’ or the ‘Something Wicked’ trilogy or something like that on here, but I’m really happy with it.”

ICED EARTH recently parted ways with drummer Brent Smedley for “personal family reasons.” He has since been replaced by Raphael Saini (CHAOSWAVE).

ICED EARTH has been hitting it relentlessly, with the recent studio album, “Dystopia”, being the most toured album in the band’s illustrious history.

One of the many highlights of the “World Dystopia Tour”, a headline show at the historic Kourion Amphitheatre in Cyprus, was recently released on Blu-ray, DVD and in many other formats under the title “Live In Ancient Kourion”.

“Dystopia” was released in October 2011 via Century Media Records. The CD marked the band’s recording debut with singer Stu Block (INTO ETERNITY), who joined ICED EARTH in March 2011 following the departure of Matt Barlow.

The Housecore Horror Film Festival (HHFF) is pleased to welcome the MELVINS to the stage. The experimental sludge metal icons celebrate 30 years of musical disturbance at Housecore Horror Film Festival on Saturday, October 26, with an appearance alongside GWAR, WHITECHAPEL, GOATWHORE and IRON REAGAN.

Housecore Horror Film Festival co-founder Philip Anselmo had this to say about the last-minute addition of one of his favorite bands of all time: “Sadly, CROWBAR will not be able to make the gig. But madly great news is that the mighty MELVINS are gonna jam the fucking night away!”

Many people have wondered if EYEHATEGOD would carry on despite the tragic and unexpected death of drummer Joey LaCaze, 42, last month of respiratory failure brought on by asthma. Amazingly, MELVINS drummer extraordinaire Dale Crover has stepped up to the kit to honor LaCaze‘s name and help the EYEHATEGOD legacy reach its 25th anniversary at Housecore Horror Film Festival.

Said Anselmo about the news that his long-time New Orleans mates will still be able to play Housecore Horror Film Festival: “In the wake of severe tragedy, with EYEHATEGOD drummer Joey LaCaze passing away recently, MELVINS drummer Dale Crover will be filling in for an unforgettable alliance with EYEHATEGOD! Dammit, you KNOW you have to see this unique performance! If you don’t have a ticket to the EYEHATEGOD, get one ASAP to witness this historic event. It’ll be historic on so many levels!”

EYEHATEGOD vocalist Mike IX Williams will also be performing spoken word and signing his book, “Cancer As A Social Activity”, at Housecore Horror Film Festival and guitarist Jimmy Bower will also appear at Housecore Horror Film Festival as the drummer with his other band, DOWN.

Housecore Horror Film Festival is also excited to welcome New York-based horror doom metallers BLOOD FARMERS. Originally formed in 1989, the band combines the atmosphere of ’70s horror with heavy doses of psychedelia and doom in the tradition of BLACK SABBATH and SAINT VITUS. Now, thanks to the bandmembers’ affiliation with cult film distributor Grindhouse Releasing, BLOOD FARMERS will make their first-ever appearance in Texas alongside the movies that inspired their creeped-out music… live at the Housecore Horror Film Festival!

GWAR‘s new album, “Battle Maximus”, sold around 3,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 109 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD — the band’s first full-length studio effort since the loss of their longtime guitar player Flattus Maximus — was issued on September 17 on Metal Blade Records.

GWAR‘s previous CD, 2010’s “Bloody Pit Of Horror”, opened with around 2,800 units — roughly half of the first-week tally registered by 2009’s “Lust In Space”, which premiered with 5,000 copies to land at No. 96.

“This album is both a tribute to Flattus and a telling of the next chapter in the story of GWAR,” Oderus Urungus stated about “Battle Maximus”. “The combo of the brand new album and show should satisfy even the most hardcore Flattus devotee with the fact that GWAR‘s slay-skills are as supreme as ever, and the band stands poised to embark on our most earth-shattering world tour yet. We have mourned, we have honored, and now it’s time to fucking DEVASTATE in the name of Flattus and the supreme entity that is GWAR.”

GWAR‘s “Battle Maximus” features twelve brand new tracks that not only honor their departed ally, but tells the story of GWAR‘s latest struggle against what may be their greatest enemy yet… the insidious “Mr. Perfect”, who has travelled through time itself to steal the power of GWAR — the power of immortality, and use this power to mutate the human race into his twisted vision of what the “perfect” human should be. Once again GWAR finds themselves as the only thing standing between the human race and the latest super-powered shithead bent on the destruction of GWAR and the enslavement of their worshippers.

“Battle Maximus” track listing:

01. Intro
02. Madness At The Core Of Time
03. Bloodbath
04. Nothing Left Alive
05. They Swallowed The Sun
06. Torture
07. Raped At Birth
08. I, Bonesnapper
09. Mr. Perfect
10. Battle Maximus
11. Triumph Of The Pig Children
12. Falling
13. Fly Now

The song “Bloodbath” can now be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below.
