ANTHRAX has officially commenced the songwriting process for the band’s next studio album, tentatively due in 2014. Guitarist Scott Ian tweeted this past Saturday: “Today [drummer Charlie Benante] and [bassist Frank Bello] are coming over to start writing for the next record. The few skeletons that are rattling around sound vicious!”

Benante recently spent time recovering from surgery for carpal tunnel syndrome. He rejoined his bandmates for their September 13 performance at “The Battle Of San Bernardino” festival in San Bernardino, California alongside IRON MAIDEN, MEGADETH, TESTAMENT, OVERKILL and SABATON.

The first photo of the new ANTHRAX lineup — featuring the band’s latest addition, guitarist Jon Donais (SHADOWS FALL) — can be seen below (photo by Stephanie Cabral).

Donais has been touring with ANTHRAX since Rob Caggiano‘s departure in January, and will continue to play with ANTHRAX for the foreseeable future.

Speaking to Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas for the “Metal Hammer” radio show on TeamRock Radio, Scott Ian stated about the band’s current second-guitarist situation: “Jon‘s been with us since February, and I think I can safely say he’s passed the audition… [laughs]. I know we haven’t said anything official yet, but in my mind, he’s the guy. I’m sure some type of official announcement… because in this world, people apparently need that kind of information so they can sleep well at night. But as far as I’m concerned, Jon is the guitar player in ANTHRAX.”

Donais previously stated about playing with ANTHRAX: “I grew up on ANTHRAX, they’re the thrash scene, they’re one of the ‘Big Four,’ I’d be crazy to not want to play with them. Initially, Rob called and told me he was leaving the band, and asked if I’d be interested in filling in. Then Scott called me and everything fell into place.”

Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas recently conducted an interview with Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven of Norwegian black metallers SATYRICON for the “Metal Hammer” radio show on TeamRock Radio. You can listen to the chat using the SoundCloud player below.

SATYRICON‘s new, self-titled studio album was released on September 9 in Norway via Indie Recordings, and in the rest of Europe through Roadrunner Records. The CD, which will be made available on September 17 in North America via Nuclear Blast Entertainment, was produced by Sigurd “Satyr” Wongraven and was recorded in Norway, and mixed by Adam Kasper. The effort features a guest appearance by Sivert Høyem, the Norwegian singer best known as the vocalist of the rock band MADRUGADA.

“Satyricon” track listing:

01. Voice Of Shadows
02. Tro Og Kraft
03. Our World, It Rumbles Tonight
04. Nocturnal Flare
05. Phoenix
06. Walker Upon The Wind
07. Nekrohaven
08. Ageless Northern Spirit
09. The Infinity Of Time And Space
10. Natt

Limited-edition CD digipack bonus tracks:

11. Phoenix (Recording Session Mix)
12. Our World, It Rumbles Tonight (Deeper Low Mix)
13. Natt (Wet Mix)

Comments Satyr: “We are back! Sorry it took so long, but we needed the time to be able pull off a record like this.

“Comparing this one to previous records is time wasted, it is SATYRICON; constantly on the move.

“Naming this record ‘Satyricon’ was the most obvious thing in the world. We have never done a record which captures the spirit of this band in such a way. Ever. It will demand a lot from you as a listener, but I know you will love it. It will grow on you and that is why it will stay with you forever.

“We won’t tour as much in the future as we used to, and that will just make every tour more special. This album and this tour is for you and ourselves. It is our moment!”

Speaking to AOL‘s Noisecreep at this year’s Inferno festival, Satyr stated about SATYRICON‘s new album: “To me, it sounds very authentic, it’s organic-sounding. And in this digital age where music is mostly played through computers, a lot of that analog vibe gets lost in translation when you play music through medias like that, but I still wanna do it because there’s nothing quite like it. To me, it just makes everything sound the way it’s supposed to sound — it’s dynamical; the music is alive, it’s not overly compressed, the levels are not pushed. So, musically speaking, it’s a very atmospheric record… This record is full of life. There are a lot of surprises here, but I think it’s gonna be a record that’s gonna help the black metal movement perhaps find a new way for the future.”

Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas recently conducted an interview with bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker and guitarist Bill Steer of reactivated British extreme metal pioneers CARCASS for the “Metal Hammer” radio show on TeamRock Radio. You can listen to the chat using the SoundCloud player below.

CARCASS‘ new album, “Surgical Steel”, can be streamed in its entirety in the YouTube clip below.

“Surgical Steel” will be released on September 16 in the U.K., September 13 in the rest of Europe and September 17 in North America via Nuclear Blast Records. The effort was produced by Colin Richardson (FEAR FACTORY, MACHINE HEAD, NAPALM DEATH, SLIPKNOT, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE) and mixed by Andy Sneap (MEGADETH, ACCEPT, EXODUS, ARCH ENEMY).

“Surgical Steel” will be available on several collectible formats, which can now be ordered with or without an exclusive t-shirt design here.

Joining guitarist Bill Steer and bassist/vocalist Jeff Walker in CARCASS‘ current incarnation are new drummer Dan Wilding (ABORTED, TRIGGER THE BLOODSHED) and guitarist Ben Ash (PIG IRON, DESOLATION, LIQUEFIED SKELETON).

CARCASS‘ first studio LP since 1996’s “Swansong” will feature guest vocals from original sticksman Ken Owen.

In a recent interview with Chile’s Radio Futuro, Walker stated about the new CARCASS CD: “We think we’ve made a good album, so it’s gonna be very interesting when people get to hear the record. We can’t wait to see what people think.”

He continued: “It sounds like CARCASS. Even the drumming sounds like CARCASS. Everything about it… I think it’s gonna shock people, how good it is. I think it’s got all the elements that people like, yet it still sounds fresh. So that’s all I can say, really, ’cause we don’t really sound like any other band, and the fact that after 17 years, we wrote music and it still sounds like CARCASS, I think it’s good.”

Regarding the direction of the forthcoming CARCASS album, Walker previously stated: “We’ve taken stylistic cues from all the albums because it’s in our blood, but it’s no rehash or mess of ideas. I think it sounds almost like the missing link between the third and forth albums but with some groove in there. I’ve jokingly christened some parts ‘trad blast’ and some ‘death sleaze’… don’t think for a minute this is just some nostalgic throwback album — we’re setting up another 17 years of ideas for other bands to copy and clean up on. [laughs]”

Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas recently conducted an interview with drummer Jeremy Spencer and guitarist Jason Hook of FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH for the “Metal Hammer” radio show on TeamRock Radio. You can listen to the chat using the SoundCloud player below.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH‘s new album, “The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell Volume 1”, sold 112,000 copies in the U.S. to debut at No. 2 on the Billboard album chart. The record arrived in stores on July 30. The chart and first-week sales numbers are both career highs for the group, whose previous effort, 2011’s “American Capitalist”, sold 91,000 copies in its first seven days to enter the chart at No. 3.

The group’s 2009 sophomore album, “War Is The Answer”, moved 44,000 copies to land at No. 7. All three previous FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH releases have gone gold.

“The Wrong Side Of Heaven And The Righteous Side Of Hell Volume 1” is the first half of a two-record set, with the second half due to arrive on Novemeber 19.

After coming up with 25 songs for the album, the band first envisioned putting them out all together in one double-disc set, before deciding to split the collection into two separate releases.

First single “Lift Me Up” features guest vocals from JUDAS PRIEST frontman Rob Halford. Other guests include IN THIS MOMENT singer Maria Brink, SOULFLY frontman Max Cavalera, HATEBREED vocalist Jamey Jasta and rapper Tech N9ne.

FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH will kick off a headlining North American trek on September 15 at the Aftershock festival in Sacramento, California.

Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas recently conducted an interview with guitarist Corey Beaulieu and guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy of Florida metallers TRIVIUM for the “Metal Hammer” radio show on TeamRock Radio. You can listen to the chat using the SoundCloud player below.

TRIVIUM‘s eagerly awaited new album, “Vengeance Falls”, will be released on October 15 via Roadrunner Records. Produced by David Draiman (DISTURBED, DEVICE), the follow-up to 2011’s “In Waves” is available for pre-order at Trivium.org. The first single, “Strife”, is available as an instant download with all pre-orders.

‘Vengeance Falls’ is the culmination of everything we’ve gone through; the representation of struggle endured from within and experienced from the world. Every failure and every success has led us to this moment. ‘Vengeance Falls’ is this moment in time,” said TRIVIUM vocalist and guitarist Matt Heafy.

Producer David Draiman added: “‘Vengeance Falls’ is a masterpiece of metal. It is [TRIVIUM‘s] finest work to date, and a record so strong that it will blow the doors open to a world they deserve to dominate.”

Long hailed as one of modern metal’s most powerful live acts, TRIVIUM will hit the road hard in support of “Vengeance Falls”, kicking off with a North American co-headline tour alongside DEVILDRIVER. The dates get underway Thursday, September 12 at Boise, Idaho’s Knitting Factory and then continue through mid-October.

“Vengeance Falls” marks a massive creative milestone for the acclaimed metallers. The collection — recorded earlier this year at Draiman‘s Austin, Texas home studio — sees the band pushing the envelope on their own distinctive sound, a sonic approach that saw “In Waves” hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Albums chart upon its release, not to mention a stunning Top-15 debut on The Billboard 200 — their highest chart rankings to date.

“Vengeance Falls” track listing:

01. Brave This Storm
02. Vengeance Falls
03. Strife
04. No Way To Heal
05. To Believe
06. At The End Of This War
07. Through Blood And Dirt And Bone
08. Villainy Thrives
09. Incineration: The Broken World
10. Wake (The End Is Nigh)

TRIVIUM filmed a video for an as-yet-undiclosed song off “Vengeance Falls” last month at Studio One in Orlando. The clip was directed by Ramon Boutviseth, who has previously worked with NONPOINT, DARKEST HOUR, INCUBUS and ALL THAT REMAINS, among others. Check out photos from the video shoot at this location.

TRIVIUM will hit the road in North America this fall with DEVILDRIVER, AFTER THE BURIAL and SYLOSIS.

The HMT gang

A massive, hearty congratulations to everybody involved in the Heavy Metal Truants, whose two and a half day grueling 171-mile ride from London to Download at Castle Donington in June has already raised a whopping £80,000… and there’s more to come with something special coming soon for metal fans!

The ride featured various industry heavyweights, including Iron Maiden manager Rod Smallwood, and our own Hammer Editor-In-Chief Alexander Milas, Prog Editor Jerry Ewing, TeamRock CEO Billy Anderson, Classic Rock magazine Editor In Chief Scott Rowley, and a host of musicians including Young Guns’ Ben Holiffe, Tesseract’s James Monteith, Paradise Lost’s Nick Holmes, Trivium’s Paolo Gregoletto, and Perry from Pendulum!

On Wednesday night at a special event at the world-famous Crobar in central London, cheques were presented to the three patron charities of the Heavy Metal Truants campaign – Childline, Teenage Cancer Trust and Nordoff Robbins.

“Huge thanks to everyone who took part in the Donington Heavy Metal Truants bike ride for your commitment and effort to raise so much money for our work,” says Jo Carter,  Director of Fundraising and Communications at Nordoff Robbins. “And thanks to all those who generously supported this magnificent effort.  At Nordoff Robbins we take the simplicity and power of music and use it to communicate with some of the most vulnerable children across the UK. Many of the children we support live with the most unimaginable challenges every day of their lives, which makes doing simple everyday things, which most of us take for granted, impossible. Many of the children we work with cannot  express their feelings and their voices often go unheard. Through the skilled use of music we give these children a voice and enable them to reach their full potential and live the lives they deserve to live. Every penny the truants bike ride raised will go directly towards funding our music therapy sessions, which means that together you will help us reach many hundreds of children who need our help. Thank you on behalf of everyone at Nordoff Robbins and those your support will enable us to reach.”

“A huge thank you to everyone who took part in and supported the Donington Heavy Metal  Truants Bike Ride – the money you’ve raised will help transform the lives of young people with cancer,” adds Siobhan Dunn, Acting CEO at Teenage Cancer Trust. “Around seven young people aged between 13 and 24 are diagnosed with cancer every day in the UK and every mile cycled, every type pumped up and every bit of effort that went into raising that money will make a difference straight away. Teenage Cancer Trust is the only charity dedicated to providing expert care and support to young people from the moment they hear the word ‘cancer’. We treat them as young people first, cancer patients second and everything we do aims to improve their quality of life and chances of survival. We couldn’t do what we do without people like you – our incredible supporters. Thank you from all of us on behalf of the young people whose lives you will help change.”

“The money raised by the Heavy Metal Truants will help fund our ChildLine service, providing advice and support to vulnerable children and young people 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” comments NSPCC Senior Fundraising Manager, Louise Smith. “On behalf of all those who contact ChildLine, thank you for your support.”

“Eighty grand raised and more to come for our Children’s charities. What a result,” says Rod. “Thanks to all of you who donated – if you didn’t, why not, send us a fiver at least!! And thanks to the riders, a terrific bunch with huge hearts! Fans, music biz and of course all the band members, great you could take the time, and in the case of a few including Trivium’s Paolo, for flying in from America just to do this. See you all next year. Great bunch of people, a tough ride but no moans and wonderful camaraderie and many a beer on the way.”

“I’d never worked with charities before, but what became apparent was that there’s no shortage of goodwill out there – people want to help, they just don’t know how,” says Alexander. “The opportunity to do something good was something I’m proud to say the great and good of the metal community – from industry magnates, band-members, to fans – simply leapt upon. Roll on next year, and keep your eyes peeled for some very cool announcements in the coming weeks!”

Once again, congratulations to everyone involved, a huge thanks to everyone who donated, and stay tuned for more more exciting news soon. For more info on Heavy Metal Truants, head to http://www.heavymetaltruants.com/
