Behind-the-scenes footage from the making of “Zenith”, the new video from the Los Angeles-based, occult-themed traditional heavy metal band HUNTRESS, can be seen below. The song comes off the group’s sophomore album, “Starbound Beast”, which was released on June 28 in Europe and on July 2 in North America via Napalm Records. The CD was recorded at Hobby Shop Studios in Los Angeles with producer Chris “Zeuss” Harris (SHADOWS FALL, HATEBREED, MUNICIPAL WASTE). The cover artwork for the effort was once again created by Vance Kelly (THE SWORD, GRAVEYARD, HIGH ON FIRE, PENTAGRAM, ALICE IN CHAINS, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, DEATH ANGEL), who previously worked on the group’s debut album, last year’s “Spell Eater”.

Director Phil Mucci, who helmed the “Zenith” clip, spoke about working with HUNTRESS singer Jill Janus: “Jill doesn’t compromise; she wanted something her fans would cherish for years to come. In a disposable world, she’s very conscious of her legacy, as am I. It’s more than a music video to us. It’s a gateway drug.”

Jill cannot wait for the fans to see “Zenith”. “You better pack your bongs now, ‘cuz this is going to trip you the fuck out!” she says.

HUNTRESS is ecstatic about our new music video for ‘Zenith’.

“Director Phil Mucci is a visionary who brought our galactic hallucinations to life.

HUNTRESS dedicates ‘Zenith’ to our fans who’ve inspired us on this path, and who continue to travel with us on our cosmic musical journey. Together we will smoke the galaxies and blaze a new future for true heavy metal!”

“Starbound Beast” includes the track “I Want to Fuck You to Death”, which was co-written for Jill Janus by legendary MOTÖRHEAD frontman Lemmy Kilmister.

In a recent interview with Examiner.com, Janus stated about HUNTRESS‘ musical evolution from “Spell Eater” to “Starbound Beast”: “When we recorded ‘Spell Eater’ in 2012, we were still such a new band, we were still developing our sound and we were still trying things out. And we put it out with a fury and we love that record. This time around with ‘Starbound Beast’, we were a little more thoughtful with it, my lyrical content is a little bit more advanced, as well as an overall new confidence in the band. The musicianship is better, the songwriting is better, and it’s the evolution of HUNTRESS. That’s what’s going on here, it’s naturally evolving and that’s really cool to see.”

THE SKULL — the new band featuring original TROUBLE members vocaist Eric Wagner and drummer Jeff “Oly” Olson alongside TROUBLE‘s longtime bassist Ron Holzner and SACRED DAWN guitarists Michael Carpenter and Lothar Keller — peformed at Tequila Jaxx this past Saturday, September 14 in Mentor-On-The-Lake, Ohio. Fan-filmed video footage can be seen below. This was THE SKULL‘s first performance with Olson.

Olson rejoined THE SKULL last month, explaining in a statement: “I know that I’ve mentioned that I wouldn’t perform TROUBLE‘s music anymore unless it’s with the other original members, but I’ve had a change of heart. I want to rock again.

“Although I have been having a great time playing keys for IN-GRAVED (led by former PENTAGRAM guitarist Victor Griffin), I miss the drums and playing classic TROUBLE songs. I’m still going to jam with Victor, but there is room for THE SKULL too.”

He added: “In just a few short months, 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary year for TROUBLE‘s debut record, ‘Psalm 9’. TROUBLE guitarists Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin are having fun with their new record, and I had fun writing some intros for it. It’s just that Eric, Ron, and myself want to jam too and celebrate our 30th anniversary as well with a tour and a new record. We’ve worked just as hard as Bruce and Rick over the years and we feel that we’ve earned the privilege to celebrate with the fans as well. There is no animosity between the two bands and we intend to keep it that way.”

“We are currently writing a debut record, set for release in 2014 and I’ve already submitted several songs to the guys. Excitement is in the air.”

THE SKULL‘s debut CD will be produced by Billy Anderson (HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP, NEUROSIS) this autumn in Portland, Oregon and will be released via as-yet-undetermined record label.

THE SKULL is:

Eric Wagner – vocals
Jeff Olson – drums
Ron Holzner – bass
Michael Capenter – guitar
Lothar Keller – guitar

Swedish heavy rockers GRAND MAGUS have entered the studio to begin recording the follow-up to last year’s “The Hunt” for an early 2014 release via Nuclear Blast. The band is once again working with producer Nico Elgstrand and engineer Staffan Karlsson (ARCH ENEMY, SPIRITUAL BEGGARS) at Studio Sweetspot in Halmstad.

Commented GRAND MAGUS drummer Ludwig “Ludde” Witt: “The time has come! Warriors! Things have been quiet around here recently, you know us well enough to know that we haven’t been sitting around idly though… We have finished writing our new album and we enter the studio!!! Monday the 2 of September marks the start of our new journey. The result will be something to behold. That is a promise. You want something heavy? You’ll get it. This will be our strongest album to date.”

Added the entire band: “The MAGUS have been busy bees with an elaborate pre-production phase, meaning that we have demoed all the tracks and it certainly pays off now. The recordings proper started off this Monday and we already have some killer basic tracks brewing. We are working simultaneously on several tracks to ensure flow and proper impact. It feels like it’s going to be something extremely powerful this time… The drums are killer and with the perfect touch we’ve learned to expect from Ludwig, there will be a wall of ferocious guitars and grinding bass guitar that will shake the bowels. Among other things we worked today on ‘Holmgång’, which has a lot of riffing going on and we think the guitar sound is the best we’ve ever had on a recording. Pure power!”

“The Hunt” was released in Europe on May 25, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD’s cover artwork was created by Arik Roper (CATHEDRAL, HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP), who also handled the art on GRAND MAGUS“Iron Will” LP.

Due to family obligations and work commitments, drummer Sebastian “Seb” Sippola left GRAND MAGUS last year.

HIGH ON FIRE‘s North American tour kicks off November 10 in Atlanta at The Masquerade and runs through mid-December, wrapping up in Los Angeles on December 12. Norwegian rockers KVELERTAK will open all dates. DOOMRIDERS (November 10 to November 23), PACK OF WOLVES (November 27) and WINDHAND (November 29 to December 12) will each be featured as the evening opener on different legs of the tour.

To promote the upcoming trek, HIGH ON FIRE will release a new single, “Slave The Hive”, on October 16, marking the first new music from the California metal champions since the spring 2012 release of “De Vermis Mysteriis”. A limited-edition seven-inch single will be available at all tour dates with a video for the song to be released simultaneously.

“De Vermis Mysteriis” sold around 7,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 63 on The Billboard 200 chart. Released on April 3, 2012 via eOne Music, the CD was recorded in Salem, Massachusetts’ GodCity Studios with producer and CONVERGE guitarist Kurt Ballou. The 10-song effort — touted as “direct, eye-opening and powerfully supernatural” — was the band’s sixth studio recording and the follow-up to 2010’s “Snakes For The Divine” which debuted at No. 62 on The Billboard 200 chart and has been called “wonderful” by The New York Times and “an exhilarating rush” by the Chicago Tribune.
