From The Bogs Of Aughiska

The Gaelic May Day, aka Beltane is upon us and the shadowy, dark ambient entity that is County Clare’s From The Bogs Of Aughiska want to celebrate with a Hammer-exclusive live video.

Recorded at London’s The Unicorn last March, these two tracks – I Rise In Bealtaine, Turn To Ash In Samhain, taken from the new album, Roots Of This Earth Within My Blood, and Aos Shi – are piped direct from Ireland’s darkest recesses and not for the fainthearted. Enjoy!

Metallica in 1997

Metallica in their 1997 Re-Load guise

Over 1000 original studio tapes from a recording venue in Ireland – including work by AC/DC and Metallica – are set to be trashed if their owners don’t claim them.

Windmill Lane Studio in Ringsend, Dublin, are clearing out their attic of more than a tonne of analogue reels collected over the years in their previous location.

The hoard includes two-inch multitrack tapes of Metallica’s 1997 single The Memory Remains, featuring Mick Jagger’s ex-girlfriend Marianne Faithfull (video below), plus – a bit more interestingly – an early version of DC’s 1990 single Thunderstruck.

The throwbacks to the pre-digital era are starting to disintegrate, which is why producer Tony Perrey doesn’t believe they’ll be reclaimed. He tells the Irish Times: “They’re probably not of any practical value. You would only ever get one chance to play them again – and that would be under archival conditions.”

It’s not impossible they could be restored for transfer to digital, but Perrey says it would be “hugely expensive.” Meaning they’re likely to land in landfill somewhere.

Still, an original tape… You’d chuck a bid on eBay, wouldn’t you?

According to Ronan McGreevy of The Irish Times, an early version of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” and a recording of METALLICA performing with Marianne Faithfull are among the mountain of tapes from the old Windmill Lane recording studios in Ireland that are waiting to be reclaimed by the artists or recording companies that recorded them.
