On March 12, singer/bassist Schmier of German thrash metal veterans DESTRUCTION was interviewed by Nick Perkel (a.k.a. Japan Nick), a contributing writer for The Aquarian Weekly and host of “Japan Nick’s Rock And Metal Pandemonium” on Montclair State University’s WMSC 90.3 radio station. Asked about his recently announced side project with members of ACCEPT, Schmier said: “It’s actually the drummer, Stefan [Schwarzman], who used to play for RUNNING WILD for many years, and he’s playing for ACCEPT now for many years also. And it’s Herman Frank, the guitar player. We met on several festivals in the last years and we’ve been hanging out. And they’re great guys. And we liked each other since point one. And somehow we had this crazy idea that in between ACCEPT and DESTRUCTION breaks, we could do something together. Because Stefan lives very close by now; he moved down here where I live. So we started to do some stuff, some rehearsals, and it turned out really great.”

He continued: “I’ve been doing this HEADHUNTER project back in the ’90s, and that was also a mix of classical heavy metal with a little bit of DESTRUCTION. So now I’m gonna go back to using my DESTRUCTION vibes, but the music is gonna be much more classical heavy metal, but it’s also, of course, gonna be more heavy and a little more powerful than ACCEPT stuff. So it’s gonna be a nice mixture. It fits really well.

“We have already written five songs. It’s actually still not really so official. So you’re one of the first persons that is interviewing me about this. I only did one interview before, with a guy from Israel, who basically put this on Blabbermouth back in the day.

“We still don’t have a name for the band. We’re writing songs right now, and as soon as we have a demo, then we’re gonna put out an official statement. But we’re having those five songs recorded now as a pre-demo, so when I’m coming back from [touring] the States [with DESTRUCTION], then we’re gonna enter the studio and record a pre-recording for the final album. So I’m excited. It sounds great. It sounds fresh. To me, it’s something different than DESTRUCTION, so it’s a great experience. And the guys are, of course… especially Herman, he’s a little bit older than me. He’s like my big, old brother. He has a lot more experience. Even if I am in the business for a long time, he has some more years, so I can learn from him. And it’s very interesting.”

He added: “I love classical heavy metal; it’s my fucking favorite. And it’s gonna be fun to do that. So I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a great side project.

“I’m not somebody who likes to sit at home the whole day. I like to be entertained and play music and have fun. And I’m looking forward to this new thing.”

Regarding whether fans can expect to hear the first music from the new project before the end of 2014, Schmier said: “It could be by the end of this year. If everything works out, we’re gonna have demos in April/May. Then look for a label. So we could enter the studio in the summer. So I hope it’s gonna happen. But, I mean, I have to do a DESTRUCTION album also, which will have top priority, of course. So we’ll see how everything goes. But I think the way it goes right now, the project will be [in the studio] earlier [than DESTRUCTION]. ‘Cause we have five songs done, and we already have new ideas. So if we find a good label fast, then it should be out by the end of the year.”

DESTRUCTION‘s 30th-anniversary album, “Spiritual Genocide”, was released on November 23, 2012 via Nuclear Blast Records. The follow-up to 2011’s “Day Of Reckoning” was recorded at Gernhart Studios in Troisdorf, Germany with engineer Martin Buchwalter and was mixed by Andy Classen. The album features guest appearances by Thomas “Angelripper” Such (SODOM), Andreas “Gerre” Geremia (TANKARD) and Ol Drake (EVILE). In addition, the “Mad Butcher”/“Release From Agony” lineup of DESTRUCTION — featuring guitarist Harry Wilkens and drummer Oliver Kaiser — reunited for one song.

“Generation Nothing”, the tenth studio album from METAL CHURCHRonny Munroe on vocals, Kurdt Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt on guitar, Steve Unger on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums — sold around 600 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD was issued on October 22, 2013 via Kurdt‘s label Body Of Work Recordings in conjunction with Rat Pak Records.

According to Vanderhoof, “Generation Nothing” — which was recorded at Kurdt‘s English Channel studio in Washingtion — marks a “return to [METAL CHURCH‘s] classic metal sound. It has elements of the first album and ‘The Dark’, but still embraces the new sound of the band without chasing the past.”

Munroe said in an interview with Metal Assault that the new METAL CHURCH effort would contain material that is “very reminiscent of the old days with some stuff that’s very ‘now.'” He added: “There’s a bit of… I’m not going to say ‘prog’ because it’s not, but there’s a couple of elements in there that are a little bit progressive. For the most part, out of this batch of songs, they really sound more reminiscent of the early days than anything we’ve done before with this lineup. This excites me very much, and I think the fans are really going to dig it.”

Regarding the circumstances that led to METAL CHURCH‘s breakup in 2009, Ronny said: “Well, in a nutshell, without going into a huge and long story here, it was certain aspects of things that had continued to happen to the band throughout its career. Not having the proper management and the proper people in place that were handling us. You know, we ended up taking some shows we shouldn’t have taken and that just led to where Kurdt was really getting fed up and then we all kind of got that way. Basically, we figured before we end up disbanding because of other reasons such as maybe starting to fight with one another or whatnot, we decided to go ahead and end it then. We all ended up friends and we wanted to keep it that way. So I won’t go into specifics, but we all know what the music industry is like now compared to what it was like back then. We just didn’t have the right people in our camp.”

Asked what the band is going to do differently this time around to avoid falling into the same trap, Ronny said: “This time around we’re going to release this next record on Kurdt‘s label. Basically, Kurdt and the band and whatnot are taking a lot more control of the situation. Yes, maybe the downloading thing is even worse than 2009, but also on the other hand, if you know what you’re doing and you use the Internet correctly, you can actually have success. Kurdt‘s been doing that with his prog band PRESTO BALLET and whatnot. In this day and age, the time is right to go and try something on your own. If it doesn’t work, you can always end up going out and searching for a label or something. We’re going to take a shot at it and see what happens and I think we’re probably going to have some decent success.”

MÖTLEY CRÜE guitarist Mick Mars says that he doesn’t like the fact that his band uses pre-recorded backing vocals in its live shows, saying that he prefers to watch groups whose performances are delivered entirely live.

During an appearance on this past Monday’s edition of Eddie Trunk‘s show “Trunk Nation” on SiriusXM‘s Hair Nation, Mars was asked about the fact that he has a microphone in front of him on stage during MÖTLEY CRÜE‘s live shows even though, by his own admission, his “voice sucks so bad.”

“That’s a whole another story right there, son….” Mars laughed nervously, seemingly unsure how he should comment on the issue. “That could get me in a lot of trouble. I could say there’s, like, a… Let me put it this way… I’ll just say two words and you’ll know: Britney Spears.”

Pressed on whether this was somewhat of a controversial issue within the band, Mars said: “No, but I think that it is between a lot of fans, a lot of music people.”

Asked how he personally feels about “supplementation on the live stage,” Mick said: “I don’t like it. I think a band like ours… I have to say ’60s bands were my favorite — ’60s and ’70s bands — because they were real, like, three-piece bands or four-piece bands, and they just got up there and kicked it up. Made a mistake? So what? Sounded a little bit empty here or there? So what? It’s the bigness and the rawness and the people that developed and wrote the songs and made them and presented them. To me, that’s what I really like. I mean, I could put on a MÖTLEY CD and play with it all day long. I don’t wanna do that.”

MÖTLEY CRÜE held a press conference on January 28 at Hotel Roosevelt in Los Angeles where they announced that the band will launch its “Final Tour” later this year, with the group planning to play 72 shows in North America in 2014 and more overseas in 2015. Making it official, the four members of the band had their lawyer draw up a formal “cessation of touring” agreement that goes into effect at the end of 2015 and prohibits the members of the group from going on the road again under the MÖTLEY CRÜE banner.

Elize Ryd of Swedish metallers AMARANTHE has uploaded an audio recording of her singing the NIGHTWISH song “Nemo”. Ryd laid down the vocals for the track in 2006 when the Finnish symphonic metal band was seeking a replacement for Tarja Turunen. Check it out below.

Says Ryd: “I’ve been saving this for a special moment. And now when I became a singer as I was dreaming of… and been travelling all over the world and met fantastic people and also NIGHTWISH on stage. And have such wonderful fans.

“It is a amazing memory from the day when NIGHTWISH sent me a demo with music and ask me to put my voice on it!! So here it is. ‘Nemo’ from the NIGHTWISH audition 2006!!”

Ryd, who has been touring the world as a backing singer vocalist for KAMELOT, filled in for then-NIGHTWISH singer Anette Olzon for a show in Denver, Colorado in September 2012 because Olzon was suffering from fever and vomiting and was forced to spend the night at a local hospital.

In a recent interview, Ryd stated about the Denver gig: “It was a very special thing.

“I love NIGHTWISH and I’ve sung their songs many times for myself. [laughs]

“They asked me if I would be willing to sing for them that night, and we decided that if the audience agreed it was okay for them that I sing, of course I was going to help NIGHTWISH out so they could do the show. At least with some singing so they wouldn’t have to do it all instrumental.”

She added: “It was a little bit like a dream come true for me because I always wanted to sing for NIGHTWISH. [laughs] I did audition for them years ago, so to actually be on stage with them was great. And the response from the crowd really helped. I was almost crying on stage because the people were so supportive.”

U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine recently got the chance to chat to SLIPKNOT and SCAR THE MARTYR drummer Joey Jordison and asked him for his thoughts on some of metal’s big-hitters that have been grabbing headlines this year. Here’s what he had to say.

On AVENGED SEVENFOLD:

Jordison: “Honestly, I don’t own any AVENGED SEVENFOLD records and I’ve not heard the new record. I’ve read about comparisons to METALLICA on the new record, and I guess there’s a certain controversy around that, but I’ve not paid that much attention to it. Nothing against them, I’m not knocking them, but I was just never a fan: not that they’re bad, they’re just one of those bands that kinda bypassed me.”

On METALLICA:

Jordison: “That’s the fucking band. Without METALLICA, I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing. I have every METALLICA record, of course, and I would spend hours on drums in my parents’ basement, with the stereo behind me, cranking those records and learning Lars‘ [Ulrich] drum beats, beat by beat. And nowadays, for me, METALLICA can do whatever the fuck they want. I’m not sure that ‘Lulu’ is something I’d be getting into, but METALLICA have a free pass from me to do anything, I can’t really knock anything they do. I mean [LED] ZEPPELIN and THE WHO passed the torch to METALLICA; they’re that band for our generation. Everything they do now is going to be met with a little bit of a backlash just because they’re so big, but without METALLICA, there would be no heavy bands, hardly. People have a hard time saying that, and obviously there’s a ton of other great bands, but there’s a reason that they’re huge and have been able to expand their audience to millions and millions and millions of people. I have nothing but praise for them.”

On BLACK SABBATH:

Jordison: “Proper SABBATH is SABBATH with Bill Ward. I’m sorry, it just is. Bill Ward is one of the most underrated drummers ever — the dude is fucking unreal, such a great, great player. And I just can’t bring myself to see SABBATH without Bill Ward, because he was such an integral part of that band. He’s like John Bonham or Keith Moon, one of those drummers who made the drum parts of those classic songs just as special as the guitar riffs or the vocals. I respect those guys doing what they’re doing, but sorry, count me out.”

We got the chance to chat to Slipknot legend and Scar The Martyr mainman Joey Jordison recently, so we thought we’d ask him for his thoughts on some of metal’s big-hitters that have been grabbing headlines this year. Here’s what he had to say…

On Avenged Sevenfold…

In a recent interview with Kill Your Stereo, ALTER BRIDGE bassist Brian Marshall stated about “Fortress”: “I think it’s definitely a little bit more cerebral. I think every record we try to kind of better ourselves, and I think this record definitely shows that we’ve progressed, and the arrangements of the songs, we didn’t think about too much, rather just letting them evolve. In the end, I think it shows all of that as well. We would just try things out all the time, and eventually, some of the songs would get pretty lengthy and well, we didn’t care. We’ve got a couple of 6-7 minute songs on the record, and our fans like that, and we like it too. We like those journeys that we can take with a piece of music when we can really hit it hard and that’s just something ALTER BRIDGE has become accustomed with and it’s just kind of where we’ve gone. Consistently we’ve just kind of been pushing ourselves. The songs on the record are a bit more up-tempo as well. I think this is our epic. It’s our hardest rock record to date.”

Asked if there was any particular sound ALTER BRIDGE was going for when writing and recording “Fortress”, Marshall said: “There was no real pretense of how we wanted it to sound. We just got in there on several different occasions while Myles [Kennedy, vocals] was out with Slash. He would fly into Orlando when he could, and we would have set up at Mark‘s [Tremonti, guitar] house, and we had three different writing sessions, all of which were about a week a piece, and we just went with it and sort of pieced it together. There was no pretense, we just went with a lot of our different ideas for different parts. We just got in together and kinda went through the process. It was more or less the same as we always do it. The songs are just an evolution of where we are and that’s just how it is, really.”

Marshall also elaborated on the songwriting process for “Fortress”, telling Kill Your Stereo: “I think, like, Mark did a solo project, and he put forward some more up-tempo stuff, because I think when he was writing his own record he had a lot of material that he was writing for that in particular that was put aside and either not shown or not recorded, and I think there was some very heavy stuff. I think that kind of filtered its way into ALTER BRIDGE. Some of it was a bit over the top, but it was like, he would just bounce some of those ideas off of us, and then we would kind of try them together. We just tried to walk away from each writing process with a sense of satisfaction in the songs, even if it’s just a work in progress. So it was really just a lot of ideas that hadn’t seen the light of day yet. All of us have a lot of different influences. Like Myles has got his whole Jazz and blues influences. The combination of all of our influences kind of comes together and that’s how we get the ALTER BRIDGE sound.”

Atlanta progressive metallers MASTODON have issued the following update:

MASTODON has been busy jamming every day writing and arranging the next studio album. We have quite a few songs and ideas that are taking some time to nail down what we think will make it to the next full-length.

“There will be no more touring this year. We will hit the studio in November to hopefully finish by the end of year.”

Asked about the progress of the songwriting sessions for MASTODON‘s follow-up to 2011’s “The Hunter”, guitarist Bill Kelliher told Artisan News: “We haven’t really come to the lyrical concepts yet. That’s usually the last thing that comes. We’re usually focused on the music and getting all the parts and everything sounding ‘balls to the wall,’ you know what I mean?! That’s the most important thing. And then once we’ve got all that settled and recorded, we’re always scrambling for lyrics and ideas and stuff. We’re getting a little bit better at it, and I think Brann‘s [Dailor, drums] got a lot of ideas for vocal melodies and stuff like that. I’ll play the riff and he’ll kind of sing along, and I’m, like, ‘OK, that sounds really proggy, but really awesome.’ I’m really, really excited about it. But as far as what it’s gonna be dealing with, it’s a little too early to tell; it’s pretty fresh stuff right now. I mean, we’ve got some demos, but they’re really, really rough.”

Kelliher also spoke about possible lyrical themes that might be covered on MASTODON‘s next album. He said: “Death always makes for really good story telling. It’s kind of the theme that we have a lot in our music. We’ve had a lot of friends pass away since the last record. I’m not really sure yet. I think we’re kind of focusing more about living on this earth and what would happen if this was your last year to live. I think that’s sort of maybe a little bit of what we might be kind of touching on.”

He added: “Art reflects life — how you’re feeling and your mood. I played a riff for Brann and he was, like, ‘That sounds kind of happy. Are we happy now?’ I don’t know… I am; I’m a pretty happy guy. So that’s kind of how we work; it’s pretty simple. But we’ll have to see. I really like the way ‘The Hunter’ went; that was not a total change in direction, but we just kind of proved to ourselves that we can just write stuff that we think sounds cool, and it doesn’t have to all flow together, it doesn’t have to all sound the same. It can be totally different without a concept. So I think that really opened up my mind at least to, like, ‘What if I write something like this? Is that gonna be cool?’ And we’re all on the same page right now with all the songs — the 30 or so songs we’ve gathered so far. So we’ll just have to see how it goes.”

MASTODON‘s latest album, “The Hunter”, came out in September 2011 through Reprise Records.

Steel Panther: Sexy beasts

They’re baaaaa-aaaaaack. Steel Panther have announced the title of their next studio album, and you’ll all be shocked that it’s a bit naughty-sounding.

All You Can Eat (we told you) is the follow-up to 2011′s Balls Out and will likely land in early 2014. The album was recorded in Sherman Oaks, California with producer Jay Ruston (Stone Sour, Meat Loaf).

“We feel like Steel Panther is like a buffet,” says frontman Michael Starr. “You know what I mean?! There’s a little bit of everything for everybody. And you can have as much of us as you want.”

“Listen to our record and tell us that our songs aren’t better than most of the bands out there,” adds drummer Stix Zadinia. “How funny is that? At the end of the day, it comes down to the songs. I think our songs — without sounding egotistical — I think our songs are great. When you hear the hooks in our songs, you hear the playing and you hear the vocals, you throw that up against any band in any era, and I think it stands up.”

The first video from the new album, Party Like It’s The End Of The World, will be unveiled later this year.
