In the April/May 2014 issue of Revolver magazine, the surviving members of PANTERA — vocalist Philip Anselmo, drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott and bassist Rex Brown — speak about the making of the band’s classic 1994 album, “Far Beyond Driven”, which is being re-released next week as a 20th-anniversary, two-disc edition. The new version will include a newly remastered version of the original recordings along with a new live performance from the 1994 Monsters Of Rock festival.

Speaking about PANTERA‘s touring activities that followed the release of “Far Beyond Driven”, Vinnie Paul said: “When we went on the road, that’s when the wheels started coming off and people didn’t know what other people were doing. Phil had his own bus. Things started turning into what they turned into in the end.

Phil started isolating himself from the rest of us. It got to the point where we wouldn’t see each other until about 20 or 30 minutes before showtime. You never knew if he was going to be in a shitty mood or a good mood. You just hoped it was good enough to get through the show. That’s truly where some of the shows started lacking. They weren’t as good as they used to be, and he would start his rants and go on for 20 minutes while we stood around and looked at him, like, ‘What the fuck are you saying to these people, dude? They want to hear us play some songs. Let’s play some music.'”

Said Anselmo: “The touring was really a mixed bag for me. The [chronic back] pain was intense, but the thrill was still there much of the time, and when I was onstage, that part of it I enjoyed very much. But during this time, I was drinking an entire bottle of Wild Turkey every night before a show to numb the pain I was experiencing.

“I felt trapped, man. I felt lost even trying to explain to the guys in my band, who were so used to seeing Superman up onstage, that I was not Superman anymore. I felt like a trapped animal, honestly. I felt cornered and very confused.

“The words that would come out of my mouth [while we were on stage] were abrasive. I was lashing out at other bands when I really had no business mentioning other bands during a PANTERA show. I was going slowly insane throughout the touring of this record, whether it be from pills, alcohol, or the mental stress from carrying around the chronic pain along with the addiction.”

When PANTERA broke up in 2003, Vinnie Paul and his brother, PANTERA guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott formed DAMAGEPLAN. On December 8, 2004, while performing with DAMAGEPLAN at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus, Ohio, Dimebag was shot and killed onstage by Nathan Gale. He was 38 years old.

METALLICA members Kirk Hammett, Lars Ulrich and Robert Trujillo spoke to NME TV about how their music might have influenced artists in the EDM (electronic dance music) scene. Check out the chat below.

METALLICA‘s “Metallica Through The Never (Music From The Motion Picture)”, the soundtrack companion to the forthcoming groundbreaking 3D feature film “Metallica Through The Never”, is likely to sell between 19,000 and 22,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release, according to industry web site Hits Daily Double. The estimate was based on one-day sales reports compiled after the record arrived in stores on September 24 via the band’s own record label Blackened Recordings.

A two-disc CD set, “Metallica Through The Never (Music From The Motion Picture)” highlights last year’s career-spanning concerts at Rexall Place in Edmonton and Rogers Arena in Vancouver, where the band filmed all performance footage featured in the film.

“Metallica Through The Never” stars METALLICA, one of the most popular, influential rock bands in history. In this music-driven, 3D motion picture event, award-winning filmmaker Nimród Antal immerses audiences in a bracing, raw and visceral cinematic experience with spectacular live performance footage of METALLICA‘s most iconic songs — created exclusively for film — combined with a bold, narrative story featuring imagery drawn from the band’s trailblazing iconography. Dane DeHaan portrays Trip, a young roadie sent on an urgent mission, during METALLICA‘s roaring live set in front of a sold-out arena. The film features dazzling pyrotechnics, the most elaborate live-performance stage ever built and state-of-the-art 3-D photography, captured using up to 24 cameras simultaneously.

Picturehouse will release “Metallica Through The Never” in North America on September 27 exclusively in over 300 IMAX 3D Theatres, and will expand into additional theaters on October 4.

On September 17, METALLICA‘s new movie, “Metallica Through the Never”, had its first public screening at the Rafael Theatre in San Rafael, California as part of a preview for the Mill Valley Film Festival. The four members of METALLICA, alongside director Nimród Antal (“Predators”, “Kontroll”) and actor Dane DeHaan, were on hand to both introduce the film and answer questions from the audience after the film.

Official video footage of the question-and-answer session can be seen below.

In this music-driven, 3D motion picture event, Antal immerses audiences in a bracing, raw and visceral cinematic experience with spectacular live performance footage of METALLICA‘s most iconic songs — created exclusively for film — combined with a bold, narrative story featuring imagery drawn from the band’s trailblazing iconography. Picturehouse will release “Metallica Through The Never” in North America on September 27 exclusively in over 300 IMAX 3D theaters, and will expand into additional theaters on October 4.

METALLICA reportedly spent $20 million of its own money to make the film, which will also play at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas several days before it opens in limited release on IMAX screens around the country. The film will then expand to more theaters on October 4.

The soundtrack, which features a number of METALLICA classics performed live in the movie, will be out on September 24. The two-disc CD will come out on METALLICA‘s own label, Blackened Recordings, also in digital and vinyl formats.

The concert sequences for the movie were shot in August 2012 at two shows in Vancouver, Canada and feature a stage containing elements of many of METALLICA‘s previous live productions from the past 30 years.

Norway's Shining apparently just set up on the grounds of a ruin building and played "I Won't Forget" off their One One One record. The instrumental work is spot on, but the vocals need some serious work… compared to the record? Big work. Sick show though! The band's US tour kicks off next week.
