Metal Injection recently conducted an interview with guitarist John Petrucci of progressive metal giants DREAM THEATER. You can now watch the chat below.

DREAM THEATER‘s new, self-titled album will be released on September 24 via Roadrunner Records. The nine-track disc was recorded at Cove City Studio in Glen Cove, Long Island, with Petrucci producing and Richard Chycki engineering and mixing. It’s the band’s second album with drummer Mike Mangini, and the first one on which he was a part of the writing process from Day One.

Speaking to Ultimate-Guitar.com, Petrucci stated about “Dream Theater”: “I think it’s building on [what we did on the “A Dramatic Turn of Events” album], but taking it to the next level. One of the things I really wanted to do on ‘A Dramatic Turn of Events’ was to create something that was sonically very rich and high-def and powerful and I think we accomplished that. But on this album, I wanted to take that even further…. [I wanted to] get more cinematic with it and more earthy and aggressive and bigger. I wanted a bigger, more forward in-your-face kind of sound. I think that kind of dictated the sounds we went for while we were writing and recording and then ultimately how it was mixed. So yeah, it was kind of building on that, but taking it to the next level. You always need to progress and to try and do something different and kind of have a little bit different take on it and a different perspective. But hopefully make it better as you go.”

In January, Petrucci said of Mangini‘s work: “When people hear the drumming on this album, they’re gonna be pretty freaked out. On the last album, he did a great job, but he wasn’t there for the writing process and he was interpreting drum parts that I had programmed. Even though he used his creativity, of course, to change them up and do his thing, I feel like now he’s just Mike Mangini unleashed. It’s all him. It’s all his creativity, all his decisions and ideas and man, the guy’s an animal.”

Directed by Bill Fishman (RAMONES, STEVE RAY VAUGHAN), the strictly conceptual clip deals with the torment of a soldier who’s struggling with reintegrating into his life back home due to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Regarding the song’s lyrics, John Petrucci told Billboard.com: “At the time that we were in the studio working on the [new DREAM THEATER] album and I was writing lyrics, the Boston Marathon bombings happened. There was a lot of discussion of terrorism and PTSD as if affects people who witness traumatic events like terrorism, so it was just very on my mind. It linked very well with the mood of the song, and as we started to get into it, I watched some documentaries and things like that. I was like, ‘This is really something that needs to be written about.'”

“Dream Theater” will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180-gram double LP, and a limited-edition boxed set.

Sukanya Krishnan if WPIX-TV spoke to TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider earlier this week about Dee Snider’s Ride, which will benefit the Long Island Cares charity. You can watch the chat below.

Snider, a long time resident of Long Island, was deeply moved by the struggle Long Islanders endured after Superstorm Sandy and wanted to provide relief.

Registration for the event opens at 9 a.m. and the ride will start at 11 a.m Sunday, September 8 at Lido Beach park in Long Island, New York.

Says Snider: “Like so many of you, my ride committee and I were deeply affected by the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy on Long Island. To see so many brave Long Islanders so desperately in need touched us all. I was not surprised to see so many Strong Island heroes stepping up and helping others.

“Seeing this need in my own ‘backyard,’ so to speak, made me realize that even without Sandy, there is so much work to be done right here at home. To that end, I decided, after 10 years of raising money for the March Of Dimes on Long Island (and 14 years of March Of Dimes work all over the country) that I wanted to change the cause that I rode for, and start raising money to help our friends and neighbors in need.

“Don’t get me wrong, the March Of Dimes is an incredible organization that I will always support. Their work for babies in need is unparalleled. I just felt it was time to use my efforts to help people where I live have a better life.

“I’m pleased to say that my entire ride committee has joined me and all are equally passionate about helping other Long Islanders. This is an incredible group of people who work tirelessly and I thank them for their continued support for both myself and the ride.

“In looking for a cause to back, I discovered Long Island Cares/The Harry Chapin Foundation. They have not only been working to feed the hungry on Long Island for more than 30 years, but they really stepped up and went beyond their original mission statement to help Long Islanders so desperately in need after the super storm. While I had heard of the foundation, I really knew little about what they did, but have now learned the truth about this incredible organization founded by he late music legend Harry Chapin. 11% of all Long Islanders are in need of assistance finding food to eat, and Long Island Cares does their damnedest to feed them all!

“This September 8th will be my 11th annual ride and ‘Dee Snider’s Ride To Fight Hunger On Long Island’ will benefit Long Island Cares. My committee and I couldn’t be happier and we hope you will ride with us for this very important cause.

“I am fortunate to have never personally experienced true hunger in my entire life. I can only imagine how terrible it must be. In this land of plenty we live in, there is no reason even one person should go without, and with your help, Long Island Cares aims to make Harry Chapin‘s dream a reality and see that every mouth is fed.

“It will be the same ride you’ve experienced in years past, with the same biker brothers and sisters, but just be for a new charity that helps with a major problem so much closer to home for us all.”

Fan-filmed video footage of GOJIRA‘s August 31 performance at A38 in Budapest, Hungary can be seen below.

GOJIRA‘s fifth album, “L’Enfant Sauvage”, sold almost 11,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 34 on The Billboard 200 chart. The band’s previous CD, “The Way Of All Flesh”, opened with 4,200 units back in 2008 to land at No. 138.

“L’Enfant Sauvage” entered the official chart in France at position No. 7 (No. 17 on the digital chart).

“L’Enfant Sauvage” (which translates to “The Wild Child”) features 11 tracks of mind-bending, thunderous metal. The CD was recorded at Spin Recording Studios in Long Island City, New York with co-producer Josh Wilbur (LAMB OF GOD).

In a March 2013 interview with Loudwire, GOJIRA guitarist/vocalist Joseph Duplantier stated about “L’Enfant Sauvage”‘s success: “We just give our best all the time to be available for our music and I don’t even know where it comes from. I guess the music is good and people dig it — there’s a balance in the music, there’s not too much aggression so if you’re a metal fan, you’ll get your fix, but still you will have some other moments and a door open for more people to appreciate our music.”

He continued: “When I listen to my record, I’m like, ‘Fuck, this should be better, this should be like this or that,’ and then I see all these good comments about the album and I’m just, like, ‘Wow, this is awesome.’ But I have no idea what [fans] experience when they listen to the record. We’re too close to the damn thing.”
