“Generation Nothing”, the tenth studio album from METAL CHURCHRonny Munroe on vocals, Kurdt Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt on guitar, Steve Unger on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums — sold around 600 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD was issued on October 22, 2013 via Kurdt‘s label Body Of Work Recordings in conjunction with Rat Pak Records.

According to Vanderhoof, “Generation Nothing” — which was recorded at Kurdt‘s English Channel studio in Washingtion — marks a “return to [METAL CHURCH‘s] classic metal sound. It has elements of the first album and ‘The Dark’, but still embraces the new sound of the band without chasing the past.”

Munroe said in an interview with Metal Assault that the new METAL CHURCH effort would contain material that is “very reminiscent of the old days with some stuff that’s very ‘now.'” He added: “There’s a bit of… I’m not going to say ‘prog’ because it’s not, but there’s a couple of elements in there that are a little bit progressive. For the most part, out of this batch of songs, they really sound more reminiscent of the early days than anything we’ve done before with this lineup. This excites me very much, and I think the fans are really going to dig it.”

Regarding the circumstances that led to METAL CHURCH‘s breakup in 2009, Ronny said: “Well, in a nutshell, without going into a huge and long story here, it was certain aspects of things that had continued to happen to the band throughout its career. Not having the proper management and the proper people in place that were handling us. You know, we ended up taking some shows we shouldn’t have taken and that just led to where Kurdt was really getting fed up and then we all kind of got that way. Basically, we figured before we end up disbanding because of other reasons such as maybe starting to fight with one another or whatnot, we decided to go ahead and end it then. We all ended up friends and we wanted to keep it that way. So I won’t go into specifics, but we all know what the music industry is like now compared to what it was like back then. We just didn’t have the right people in our camp.”

Asked what the band is going to do differently this time around to avoid falling into the same trap, Ronny said: “This time around we’re going to release this next record on Kurdt‘s label. Basically, Kurdt and the band and whatnot are taking a lot more control of the situation. Yes, maybe the downloading thing is even worse than 2009, but also on the other hand, if you know what you’re doing and you use the Internet correctly, you can actually have success. Kurdt‘s been doing that with his prog band PRESTO BALLET and whatnot. In this day and age, the time is right to go and try something on your own. If it doesn’t work, you can always end up going out and searching for a label or something. We’re going to take a shot at it and see what happens and I think we’re probably going to have some decent success.”

Aniruddh “Andrew” Bansal of Metal Assault recently conducted an interview with legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENT, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DETHKLOK). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Assault: Coming to your “Gene Hoglan Experience” stuff that you’ve been doing, I think you’ve done one show so far in Calgary. What was that like and people who’re going to see the shows in the coming few days, what can they expect from this event?

Hoglan: A whole lot of fun! That’s one thing I try to bring — a real sense of fun — and this thing kind of borders on stand-up comedy for me, because everything I do is completely ad-lib. Footage from that Calgary show has made it on the Internet — I don’t know how much, but I’ve only seen the concert portion of it with me actually playing. But everything is a completely different night. It is an individualistic night, and it’s so interactive that fans are free to ask any kind of questions. I don’t have a time limit on the [question-and-answer] section or anything like that. You can ask me about anything. If you want to keep it about myself or some of the bands I’ve played with or some of the people I’ve worked with, that’s cool. Even if I miss out some people who have their hands up during the session, they can always come up to me with their questions afterwards. So it is a lot of fun, every night is its own experience, and no two nights will be the same on this. At times I’d probably end up telling the same story here and there if somebody asks, but I do have a wealth of information and entertainment inside my head and I just want to get that out. It’s a very light-hearted night, you know. Plus, I play drums! I play to a bunch of different tracks that a lot of people enjoy and I talk in between them. It’s kind of spoken-word/gig, a one-man gig where the tracks are booming and I’m playing along with them. It’s a really special night and I hope everybody that comes out enjoys it and I guarantee you will. There’s not going to be a frown on any face at the end of the night. I’ve done lots of these shows, but it’s only now that we’re calling it “The Gene Hoglan Experience”. Nobody has been disappointed and everybody has been leaving with big ol’ smiles on their faces, and that’s really cool to me.

Metal Assault: Right, so there’s no planned set list or schedule for these shows, then? It’s just all free form and wherever it takes you.

Hoglan: Absolutely. I do have a pre-planned idea for a night, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to be married to it. If somebody shouts out, “Hey, man! Can you play this song?” If I’ve got the backing track, hell yeah! I’ve done that sometimes. I’ve got a lot of tracks, but at times I don’t have what they ask for. So then somebody else yells out, “I’ve got a copy of it in my car!” I’m like, “Well hey, bring up the CD and I’ll try playing along to it!” Off the top of my head, that’s the way the whole night goes. It’s very interactive, so that’s one thing that I really appreciate about it. You don’t get shout-out request nights when your favorite bands are playing and you don’t get to ask questions as they are on stage. So this is something that’s very different and I’m trying to make it open and accessible to everyone. This is not just about drums. It’s inclusive for everybody. It’s not just a night of drum talk or isn’t a drum clinic. This is me getting on stage and playing some songs. Am I going to talk about the drum parts in those songs? Well, if the fans are interested in that, then cool. When I’ve done these kinds of things in the past, I’ve asked how many drummers I’ve got in the crowd and it’s usually never more than a third of the audience. So, it is inclusive for metal fans, drum fans, Gene fans and fans of any of my bands. Or, you don’t even have to be a metalhead. If you want to come out and be entertained, this is going to be an entertaining night. So there you go!

Metal Assault: You’re also putting out a new DVD which is a sequel to “The Atomic Clock”. This time what have you done that you didn’t do on the first one?

Hoglan: Well, I managed to get licenses to a lot of songs that I’ve played. We put together a small track listing of me playing along to the actual recorded versions of a lot of people’s favorite tunes. On the next one, I’m getting even more licenses, but on this one I’ve included a bunch of bands that I’ve played for and still playing for. That’s the notable difference. On the first “The Atomic Clock”, I didn’t get any licenses so I merely played to the band MECHANISM, which at the time was my main focus. I even played two instrumental tracks of MECHANISM as opposed to playing the whole song. This time I’m not playing instrumental tracks except for one from one of my more popular bands, but I’ve got all the basic instrumental backing tracks and I’m playing along to those as opposed to having all the vocals, samples and everything else on it. For the most part, that’s a major difference and that’s really exciting, seeing myself play to actual recorded tracks to some of these cool bands. It’s in the stages of editing right now. It’s coming along great; it looks better than the last one and way more pro. It’s an improved version of the last one. I’m still pretty light-hearted in it and I don’t take myself real seriously. It’s got a lot of footage that the last one didn’t have. So I’m sure people checking it out will see that it’s definitely a departure from the first one. That was done on a shoe-string budget, pretty much all by myself, but for this one I’ve got a team of experts helping me with it. So it’s really great and it’s called “The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two”.

We all ended up friends and we wanted to keep it that way. So I won’t go into specifics, but we all know what the music industry is like now compared to what it was like back then. We just didn’t have the right people in our camp.”

Asked what the band is going to do differently this time around to avoid falling into the same trap, Ronny said: “This time around we’re going to release this next record on Kurdt‘s label. Basically, Kurdt and the band and whatnot are taking a lot more control of the situation. Yes, maybe the downloading thing is even worse than 2009, but also on the other hand, if you know what you’re doing and you use the Internet correctly, you can actually have success. Kurdt‘s been doing that with his prog band PRESTO BALLET and whatnot. In this day and age, the time is right to go and try something on your own. If it doesn’t work, you can always end up going out and searching for a label or something. SOULFLY‘s ninth album, “Savages”, is scheduled for release on October 4 via the band’s new label home, Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The CD was produced by Terry Date, who is known for his work with such acts as PANTERA, DEFTONES and SOUNDGARDEN, among many others. Guest vocal appearances on “Savages” include SOULFLY bass player Tony Campos, CLUTCH‘s Neil Fallon, NAPALM DEATH‘s Mitch Harris, Jamie Hanks of I DECLARE WAR and Max Cavalera‘s son Igor Cavalera (of LODY KONG).

The cover artwork for “Savages” was created by renowned artist Paul Stottler, who is best known for his work on SACRED REICH‘s legendary “Surf Nicaragua” cover.

Date previously mixed SOULFLY‘s “3” (2002), “Prophecy” (2004) and “Dark Ages” (2005) albums, but had never produced any of the group’s CDs.

The drum tracks on the new SOULFLY CD were laid down by Max‘s 21-year-old son, Zyon Cavalera, who joined the band as its touring drummer for its recent rampage through North America.

Zyon previously played with SOULFLY during the band’s tour of Brazil in February 2012.

It is Zyon‘s unborn heartbeat that can be heard during the intro of SEPULTURA‘s classic song “Refuse/Resist”, which appeared on the band’s RIAA-gold-certified “Chaos A.D.” album, released three years before Max‘s departure from the group.

Former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman was interviewed by Aniruddh “Andrew” Bansal on the fourth episode of the “Metal Assault” radio show on the Los Angeles-based station Razor KXRZ. On what he is currently doing:

Friedman: “I’m actually here in L.A. recording my new album, which is gonna come out around January. I’ll be working on this album for the next month and a half or so, and then it will be done. And I can’t wait for everybody to hear it.”

On the musical direction of his upcoming solo CD:

Friedman: “[This is] by far the most intense and the most heavy and the most… How do you say this…? It’s the most… If you like any of my stuff, this would be the most ‘Marty‘ of anything. So if you hate my stuff, you’re gonna really hate this record a lot. It’s very uncommercial.

“I wanted to make a record that, there’s no dispute that, when people say they’re a fan of my music, or they like my music, that this is the representative of my whole musical sound.

“I rarely listen to my previous stuff, but sometimes I listen back to it and see what was going on. And a song called ‘Forbidden City’ kind of made me think, ‘I’m really still happy with this song, even though it was recorded a long, long time ago. I wanted to do something, not along the lines of ‘Forbidden City’, but much more intense, because that was a long time ago, and I’ve come so far since then, and I can do so much more, and I know how to do that kind of thing so much better than I did back then. So I wanted to do kind of like the 2014 version of just the deeper, heavier, more intense version of that kind of ‘Forbidden City’ kind of mood. And I remember, that type of mood was very, very uncommercial at that time, so it’s probably way more uncommercial now, but it’s just like, the hell with it, I’m just doing it my way. So that’s kind of the theme of whole album — just all abandon, all bets off, just go crazy.

“I’m constantly evolving, so for better or for worse, this is the most evolved, most intense version of myself as a guitarist and as an artist and as a songwriter and all that. But this time, probably more of a metal spirit than ever before, so that might be a little bit different.”

On making his new album for the American market:

Friedman: “This is the first time that I’m doing something with America in mind — to really kind of give America what I would like to represent myself with. ‘Cause a lot of the stuff I’ve done since… I did a very small tour in 2003 — a solo tour — and that’s it. So I’ve done so much stuff in Japan, and I really haven’t considered doing something in America. I always thought, if I’m gonna do something in America, it’s gotta be something that is really, really super special, to make it worth coming back. So that’s what this album and this new tour cycle is going to be.”

On whether there are any metal musicians he would like to collaborate with:

Friedman: “On my new album that’s coming out next [year], there’s a lot of people I’m collaborating with in metal; they’re people all metal people definitely know and love. And I’m not gonna tell you who they are yet. But, really, kind of the idea that got me into doing this American thing is this record company, Prosthetic, put together kind of a list of the people who have said good things about me in the press in America. And I don’t really follow what’s going on outside of Japan, so I kind of really didn’t know. The Prosthetic guys made this big list of all these people and they wrote this wonderful stuff about me. And I was literally drawn to tears with what these guys were saying, and how they were influenced by me, and just the stuff that they were saying about my music in detail and my playing. And I was really blown away, ’cause I really don’t follow a lot of that — what people say in the press. And it was just so nice to see it in print and to check out the guys who were saying it. And there’s so many great musicians in metal nowadays — more so than back in the ’90s. Metal has really evolved into something cool, and I’m really interested in it much more now than when I was playing in MEGADETH. When I was in MEGADETH, I thought we were the best, and that was it. Now there’s a lot of great bands, and when some of these new bands come back and say, ‘I listen to a lot of Marty‘s stuff,’ really, it’s a big deal for me. So that kind of got me inspired to do collaborations with some of these great people, as well as doing the most intense, revved up version of Marty‘s stuff. So a lot of these great people that I’ve wanted to collaborate with, I’m actually collaborating with them on my new record.”

Aniruddh “Andrew” Bansal of Metal Assault recently conducted an interview with GWAR frontman Dave Brockie (a.k.a. Oderus Urungus). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Assault: Your new album, “Battle Maximus”, comes on Tuesday, September 17. What can your fans expect from this one?

Oderus Urungus: Well, they can expect it to be the new album of GWAR music. But I’m pretty sure that everybody knows that already. I don’t know what to say except that they will have an experience unlike what they’ve had with any other GWAR album because of all kinds of different reasons. First of all, the music is different, and secondly the guitar player is different. The songtitles are also different. So, you know, like every other GWAR album, it will sound unlike any other GWAR album but it happens to be a work of titanic mastery and it will leave them gasping with shit-stained pants and urine-clogged thighs, having literally lost their ability to hold their bowels together and it being released all into themselves, just with joy. Even after everything that GWAR has been through in the last two years, somehow we’ve made an even greater album than the last one.

Metal Assault: On this album, what are the lyrical subjects that you’ve explored?

Oderus Urungus: The album attempts to do three things at once. First, kick ass. Second, tell the next chapter in the story of GWAR‘s quest against all the insidious fucks who’re trying to steal the secret of eternal life from GWAR. And also, the album is a tribute to our scumdog brother Flattus Maximus who departed to the stars and who we made this “Battle Maximus” for.

Metal Assault: Usually does it take time or effort for you to come up with these lyrical themes or are you just natural and too used to it by now?

Oderus Urungus: It’s basically what I enjoy and it also describes the events that are happening in my life. My life is pretty fucking full of events! Shit is always popping off when you’re Oderus Urungus. One second you’re on tour, one second you’re on TV, one second you’re in the studio, next thing there’s a superpower mutated fucking asshole is destroying the building trying to chop your balls off. So, basically, once I get through the battle, victoriously, I might add, I sit back in my throne and I ruminate about such things and they turn into the ideas behind our songs. It’s a purely natural process. Sometimes it can take a lot of time and sometimes it can happen very quickly. And I have to say the new album is a combination of both of those things.

Metal Assault: A lot of your critics or haters say that you’re nothing without the costumes. But I think if you actually did the shows without costumes, people would get to see what it’s like.

Oderus Urungus: Well, the biggest problem with that idea is, they would not come to the show if they already had such an opinion. But you know, the thing is, anyone who says that GWAR is just a costume band is completely not getting it because I’ve been trying to explain the fact that these are not costumes! This is what we wear. I can’t tell how many times I’ve said that. Nobody seems to understand what I’m talking about.

On August 17, the “Metal Shop” radio show, which airs every Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on the Seattle station KISW 99.9 FM, conducted an interview with METAL CHURCH bassist Steve Unger. You can now watch the chat below.

The reunited METAL CHURCHRonny Munroe on vocals, Kurdt Vanderhoof and Rick Van Zandt on guitars, Steve Unger on bass, and Jeff Plate on drums — recently inked a deal with Rat Pak Records. The band’s tenth studio album, “Generation Nothing”, will be released in the early fall via Kurdt‘s label Body Of Work Recordings in conjunction with Rat Pak.

According to Vanderhoof, “Generation Nothing” — which was recorded at Kurdt‘s English Channel studio in Washingtion — marks a “return to [METAL CHURCH‘s] classic metal sound. It has elements of the first album and ‘The Dark’, but still embraces the new sound of the band without chasing the past.”

Munroe said in a recent interview with Metal Assault that the new METAL CHURCH effort would contain material that is “very reminiscent of the old days with some stuff that’s very ‘now.'” He added: “There’s a bit of… I’m not going to say ‘prog’ because it’s not, but there’s a couple of elements in there that are a little bit progressive. For the most part, out of this batch of songs, they really sound more reminiscent of the early days than anything we’ve done before with this lineup. This excites me very much, and I think the fans are really going to dig it.”

Regarding the circumstances that led to METAL CHURCH‘s breakup in 2009, Ronny said: “Well, in a nutshell, without going into a huge and long story here, it was certain aspects of things that had continued to happen to the band throughout its career. Not having the proper management and the proper people in place that were handling us. You know, we ended up taking some shows we shouldn’t have taken and that just led to where Kurdt was really getting fed up and then we all kind of got that way. Basically, we figured before we end up disbanding because of other reasons such as maybe starting to fight with one another or whatnot, we decided to go ahead and end it then. We all ended up friends and we wanted to keep it that way. So I won’t go into specifics, but we all know what the music industry is like now compared to what it was like back then. We just didn’t have the right people in our camp.”

Asked what the band is going to do differently this time around to avoid falling into the same trap, Ronny said: “This time around we’re going to release this next record on Kurdt‘s label. Basically, Kurdt and the band and whatnot are taking a lot more control of the situation. Yes, maybe the downloading thing is even worse than 2009, but also on the other hand, if you know what you’re doing and you use the Internet correctly, you can actually have success. Kurdt‘s been doing that with his prog band PRESTO BALLET and whatnot. In this day and age, the time is right to go and try something on your own. If it doesn’t work, you can always end up going out and searching for a label or something. We’re going to take a shot at it and see what happens and I think we’re probably going to have some decent success.”

Former THE RUNAWAYS singer Cherie Currie was interviewed on the third episode of the “Metal Assault” radio show on the Los Angeles-based station Razor KXRZ. You can now listen to the program using the Mixcloud widget below. (Note: The Cherie Currie interview begins around the 47-minute mark.)

Currie spoke to the SF Examiner about the current status of the solo album she made in 2011 — produced by former GUNS N’ ROSES drummer Matt Sorum and and featuring guest appearances by fellow ex-GN’R members Slash and Duff McKagan, THE VERONICAS and Juliette Lewis. It also includes a duet with SMASHING PUMPKINS mainman Billy Corgan and a remake of the old RUNAWAYS classic “Queens Of Noise” with DISTILLERS and SPINNERETTE singer Brody Dalle.

After it took over a year for everyone involved to sign off on the CD, Currie, 53, was prevented from touring by her then-manager Kenny Laguna, who also represents Currie‘s former THE RUNAWAYS bandmate Joan Jett.

“He said, ‘Nope, you can’t play, it’s not time,'” said Currie. “One summer went by, and then another, and another was coming up, and I said, ‘Kenny, you can’t let me sit here. The band’s been waiting for two years!’ I was trying to tell him that I’m not 20 years old anymore — one year is like five when you hit 50.”

Currie has since ended her working relationship with Laguna, and as a result, “we’re not even sure if the record is going to see the light of day,” said her son, Jake Hays, who plays guitar in her band and whom she had with actor Robert Hays.

“Because the business didn’t work for me when I was young, it’s become a dream of mine to come back,” she said. “But I can’t wait for anybody anymore. I just want to play some RUNAWAYS songs for all the fans and kind of say goodbye, in a way.”

In a recent Facebook post, Currie said about her plans for the immediate future: “I’m going to record a single this summer and release it on iTunes. I’m going to play, play, play, like I wanted to from the beginning. I’m going to give the fans what they want and deserve without management and without a record company.

“[Fellow ex-THE RUNAWAYS member] Lita Ford said to me the other day, ‘Sister, you’re not dead yet!’ And she’s right. It’s time to put faith in the only things I can count on. Myself and the fans. That’s really all that matters.”
