GWAR‘s new album, “Battle Maximus”, sold around 3,500 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 109 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD — the band’s first full-length studio effort since the loss of their longtime guitar player Flattus Maximus — was issued on September 17 on Metal Blade Records.

GWAR‘s previous CD, 2010′s “Bloody Pit Of Horror”, opened with around 2,800 units — roughly half of the first-week tally registered by 2009′s “Lust In Space”, which premiered with 5,000 copies to land at No. 96.

“This album is both a tribute to Flattus and a telling of the next chapter in the story of GWAR,” Oderus Urungus stated about “Battle Maximus”. “The combo of the brand new album and show should satisfy even the most hardcore Flattus devotee with the fact that GWAR‘s slay-skills are as supreme as ever, and the band stands poised to embark on our most earth-shattering world tour yet. We have mourned, we have honored, and now it’s time to fucking DEVASTATE in the name of Flattus and the supreme entity that is GWAR.”

GWAR‘s “Battle Maximus” features twelve brand new tracks that not only honor their departed ally, but tells the story of GWAR‘s latest struggle against what may be their greatest enemy yet… the insidious “Mr. Perfect”, who has travelled through time itself to steal the power of GWAR — the power of immortality, and use this power to mutate the human race into his twisted vision of what the “perfect” human should be. Once again GWAR finds themselves as the only thing standing between the human race and the latest super-powered shithead bent on the destruction of GWAR and the enslavement of their worshippers.

“Battle Maximus” track listing:

01. Intro
02. Madness At The Core Of Time
03. Bloodbath
04. Nothing Left Alive
05. They Swallowed The Sun
06. Torture
07. Raped At Birth
08. I, Bonesnapper
09. Mr. Perfect
10. Battle Maximus
11. Triumph Of The Pig Children
12. Falling
13. Fly Now

Oderus continued: “This is our first record in our brand-new Slave Pit Studios, which Flattus had a lead role in designing, but without him we had no one left to twiddle the buttons, much less play the blazing metal leads and provide the musical direction that rescued GWAR from the depths of clown-band obscurity. I mean, Balsac is no slouch, but Flattus‘ departure left a huge hole in our band. We had no choice. We had to blow the Horn of Hate…”

“DG-7″, a brand new song from HAIL OF BULLETS, the Dutch death metal band featuring GOREFEST drummer Ed Warby, THANATOS guitarists Stephan Gebédi and Paul Baayens, vocalist Martin Van Drunen (HAIL OF BULLETS, PESTILENCE, ASPHYX) and former HOUWITSER bass player Theo van Eekelen, can be streamed using the SoundCloud widget below (courtesy of Stereogum). The track comes off HAIL OF BULLETS‘ third album, “III: The Rommel Chronicles”, which will be released on October 29 (one day earlier internationally) via Metal Blade Records.

“III The Rommel Chronicles” began to take shape in the second half of 2012 when HAIL OF BULLETS started writing songs for this third album, which sees the band approaching things a bit differently lyric-wise. Instead of describing a certain campaign or theatre of war, this album focuses on the military life, rise and fall of German field marshal Erwin Rommel.

Despite fighting on the wrong side, Rommel was undeniably a great strategist who was both feared and admired by his enemies.

Musically, “III The Rommel Chronicles” recalls a bit of their debut album. The songs are faster, more raw, more aggressive and direct than on “On Divine Winds” which had a more epic, heroic feel. Once again, production duties were handled by Ed Warby and the album was mixed and mastered by Dan Swanö. A new lyrical approach also necessitated a different style of artwork, which was provided by Dutch artist Erik Wijnands.

Swanö stated about the new HAIL OF BULLETS longplayer: “HAIL OF BULLETS return for their third album, armed to the teeth with a thunderous death metal onslaught that combines the raw ferocity of the first album with the more expanded arrangements of the second. A death metal masterpiece!”

“III The Rommel Chronicles” track listing:

01. Swoop Of The Falcon
02. Pour Le Mérite
03. DG-7
04. To The Last Breath Of Man And Beast
05. DAK
06. The Desert Fox
07. Tobruk
08. Farewell To Africa
09. The Final Front
10. Death Of A Field Marshal

As previously reported, a picture-disc version of HAIL OF BULLETS‘ debut album, “Of Frost And War”, was released on February 4 via Metal Blade. The picture disc is strictly limited to 500 copies.

HAIL OF BULLETS‘s second full-length album, “On Divine Winds”, entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 75.

HAIL OF BULLETS is:

Martin Van Drunen – Vocals
Paul Baayens – Guitar
Stephan Gebédi – Guitar
Theo Van Eekelen – Bass
Ed Warby – Drums

The official lyric video for the song “Temple Of The Living Dead” from Swedish rockers NOCTUM can be seen below. The track comes off the band’s new album, “Final Sacrifice”, which will be released on October 29 via Metal Blade Records. The cover art was painted by Timo Ketola (SUNN O))), ARKTAU EOS) and fits perfectly with the album’s raw, natural sound.

“Final Sacrifice” is a fictional horror story where each song communicates a portion of the overall narrative. The “final sacrifice” is like a red thread that ties the songs together and is the concept behind the art. “Final Sacrifice” is an analog piece of art in both audio and visual aspects.

In the town of Uppsala, Sweden in the year 2009, a band called SÉANCE was formed. Moving at breakneck speed the band formed in September, recorded a two-song demo after adding guitarist Per Wikström to the lineup in October, and by November had changed their name to NOCTUM. Within those three months, the band signed an LP deal with High Roller Records, and a CD deal with Stormspell Records.

NOCTUM‘s debut album, “The Séance”, was released in September 2010 via High Roller and in December by Stormspell. The band finally embarked on its first European tour in July of 2011, and followed that up with a new EP, “The Fiddler”.

By August of 2011, NOCTUM created enough buzz in the underground to gain the attention of Metal Blade Records, which led to a new worldwide record deal.

With a new record deal in place with a global label, NOCTUM spent the majority of 2012 refining their sound and writing new songs. Their search for original and interesting material led them to a heavier and darker sound. The progression came very naturally for the band and differs from the typical ’70s vibe. The new material successfully evokes a heaviness and emotion one might not expect from a “retro”-sounding band.

NOCTUM toured Europe again in 2012, and then welcomed the addition of drummer Fredrik Jansson after Gustaf‘s departure. Jansson, who spent time in WITCHCRAFT, COUNT RAVEN, and ABRAMIS BRAMA, was added to the lineup in time to record “Final Sacrifice” in April 2013.

“Final Sacrifice” track listing:

01. Conflagration
02. Liberty In Death
03. Resurrected In Evil
04. Deadly Connection
05. Void of Emptiness
06. The Revisit
07. A Burning Will
08. Temple Of The Living Dead
09. Azoth

NOCTUM is:

David Indelöf – Guitar/Vocals
Daniel Johansson – Guitar
Tobias Rosén – Bass
Fredrik Jansson – Drums

“Mechanical Trees”, a brand new song from the Reading, Pennsylvania-based modern progressive death metal quintet RIVERS OF NIHIL, can be streamed below. The track comes off the band’s upcoming album, “The Conscious Seed Of Light”, which will be released on October 15 in North America (one day earlier internationally) via Metal Blade Records. The CD was recorded in March 2013 at Mana Recording Studios in Florida with producer Erik Rutan. Guitarist Brody Uttley said: “Working with Erik was a true privilege. Coming from the DIY circuit and immediately recording with one of greatest death metal producers of all time pushed us all more than we ever could have expected, both as musicians and as people. We have grown tremendously as a band in all aspects because of our experience with Erik.”

Regarding “Mechanical Trees”, RIVERS OF NIHIL bassist Adam Biggs said: “The lyrics paint a bleak picture of humanity’s future, wherein the environment has become so damaged that we are forced to rely on machines to create breathable oxygen for most living creatures. Eventually, this way of life becomes too much for Earth’s dwindling human population, so the powers that be lace the machines with hallucinogenic substances to ease the pain of death. While that seems bleak, this song is actually a lot of fun to play live. It contains some of the more difficult riffs on the record, while also maintaining a good deal of atmosphere.”

RIVERS OF NIHIL, which also features vocalist Jake Dieffenbach, guitarist Jon Kunz and drummer Ron Nelson, has added dates to its fall touring schedule. In October, fans will be able to see RIVERS OF NIHIL on the road with BENEATH THE MASSACRE, RINGS OF SATURN and LEGION throughout the East Coast.

Formed in 2009, RIVERS OF NIHIL‘s music is as dark and heavy as the coal and iron their home city was built upon, taking influences from some of death metal’s heaviest, most abrasive hitters: MORBID ANGEL, GOJIRA, SPAWN OF POSSESSION and DECAPITATED, to name a few.
