San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD entered GREEN DAY‘s Oakland, California’s JingleTown Recording compound on February 9 to begin recording their new album for a late 2014 release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

The first in a series of short segments regarding the production side of making MACHINE HEAD‘s new CD can be seen below.

Tentative songtitles set to appear on the new MACHINE HEAD album include “Killers & Kings”, “Beneath The Silt”, “Eyes Of The Dead” (formerly “Ojos De La Muerte”), “Sail Into The Black”, How We Die” and “Night Of The Long Knives”.

As part of this year’s Record Store Day on April 19, MACHINE HEAD will release a 10-inch vinyl single, with the A-side containing the “demo” version of a new song, “Killers & Kings”. The B-side will be a cover version of the track “Our Darkest Days” from one of MACHINE HEAD‘s favorite bands, IGNITE.

Speaking to U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine, MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn stated about the band’s new material: “It sounds like MACHINE HEAD! It’s definitely moving forward, which I feel like we’re probably always gonna do.

“We’re not a band that ever looks back. We do our thing and try to take the life experiences that we have and the musicianship that we’ve evolved and try to use it. Obviously, we have our sound and we have the MACHINE HEAD patented harmonics, the downtuned riffs and I sing the way I sing.

“I think Bob Dylan said it best: ‘You just find new ways to say the same thing.'”

Speaking about some of the specific tracks and the lyrical themes covered on the new album, Flynn said: “I’ve got some pretty cool lyrics ready. There’s a song called ‘Night Of The Long Knives’, and it’s pretty fucked! It’s about the Manson murders, and the lyrics are really dark and vicious.

“We’ve found some new twists to give to the MACHINE HEAD sound and some new fire and excitement.”

Asked what the band’s main aims were when they started composing music for the new CD, Flynn said: “Well, it’s nice to try and have a plan, but music has a way of unravelling over time! [Laughs] You’ve just got to roll with it.

“With [2007’s] ‘The Blackening’, I’d love to say I had this grand vision of nine- and 10-minute songs, but the first four songs we wrote were the four shorter songs on the record. For months, there was no indication whatsoever that we’d have 10-minute songs. That stuff came later.

“Human nature wants to control and dictate where things will go, but you can’t. It won’t let you! The more you try, the more it goes, ‘Fuck you.’ It’s going some other way!”

U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine recently got the chance to chat to SLIPKNOT and SCAR THE MARTYR drummer Joey Jordison and asked him for his thoughts on some of metal’s big-hitters that have been grabbing headlines this year. Here’s what he had to say.

On AVENGED SEVENFOLD:

Jordison: “Honestly, I don’t own any AVENGED SEVENFOLD records and I’ve not heard the new record. I’ve read about comparisons to METALLICA on the new record, and I guess there’s a certain controversy around that, but I’ve not paid that much attention to it. Nothing against them, I’m not knocking them, but I was just never a fan: not that they’re bad, they’re just one of those bands that kinda bypassed me.”

On METALLICA:

Jordison: “That’s the fucking band. Without METALLICA, I wouldn’t be doing what I am doing. I have every METALLICA record, of course, and I would spend hours on drums in my parents’ basement, with the stereo behind me, cranking those records and learning Lars‘ [Ulrich] drum beats, beat by beat. And nowadays, for me, METALLICA can do whatever the fuck they want. I’m not sure that ‘Lulu’ is something I’d be getting into, but METALLICA have a free pass from me to do anything, I can’t really knock anything they do. I mean [LED] ZEPPELIN and THE WHO passed the torch to METALLICA; they’re that band for our generation. Everything they do now is going to be met with a little bit of a backlash just because they’re so big, but without METALLICA, there would be no heavy bands, hardly. People have a hard time saying that, and obviously there’s a ton of other great bands, but there’s a reason that they’re huge and have been able to expand their audience to millions and millions and millions of people. I have nothing but praise for them.”

On BLACK SABBATH:

Jordison: “Proper SABBATH is SABBATH with Bill Ward. I’m sorry, it just is. Bill Ward is one of the most underrated drummers ever — the dude is fucking unreal, such a great, great player. And I just can’t bring myself to see SABBATH without Bill Ward, because he was such an integral part of that band. He’s like John Bonham or Keith Moon, one of those drummers who made the drum parts of those classic songs just as special as the guitar riffs or the vocals. I respect those guys doing what they’re doing, but sorry, count me out.”

U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine recently asked guitarist/vocalist Matt Heafy of Florida metallers TRIVIUM to give us his thoughts on the state of metal in 2013. As ever, his answer was an interesting one. Check out the clip below.

“The state of metal in 2013… It’s in a great place and it’s also in a bad place,” Heafy began. “I think the fact that there is so much… I guess to each his own, and I always talk about being acceptant of all styles of life and all genres of music — I mean, you can learn something from everything — there is a lot of manufactured nonsense out there.

“For me, when I think of hardcore and I think of metal and I think of bands that I love from those genres… I don’t know. In my head, I know what they should sound like. And I can see what these bands are all copycatting off each other’s copycatting and not quite making anything original and not making anything of their own; they just keep copying a form of a copy.

“I know I’ve been looking for that young, new metal band. Where are the kids that are picking up a guitar, saying, ‘Hey, I wanna be like IRON MAIDEN,’ ‘Hey, I wanna be like METALLICA.’ Instead it’s bands that are putting weird dance music in with heavy music. Which is fine — I guess they’re doing something that kids love — but for me, as a metal fan, I’m missing out on where are the young kids picking up a guitar and starting metal bands. I guess there are a few last hopes out there — there are some really incredible bands that are doing some really incredible things. The fact that METALLICA and IRON MAIDEN are bigger than ever is a really, really great thing.

“We, as fans of metal, need to not just look at it as a thing to get turned on to casually — it’s a lifestyle; it’s far beyond just something that we casually listen to.

“I think that metal fans and metal bands need to support each other and band together and help bring each other further and bring each other upwards versus trying to drag each other down. I’m not saying that’s a common feature and that’s what’s happening now, but I definitely don’t see enough of a brotherhood, of people helping each other — bands helping each other go up, fans supporting all bands because they’re in the genre they love. I think we need more of that. And we need more kids to start playing metal again.”

TRIVIUM‘s new album, “Vengeance Falls”, will be released on October 15 via Roadrunner Records. Produced by David Draiman (DISTURBED, DEVICE), the follow-up to 2011’s “In Waves” is available for pre-order at Trivium.org. In a recent interview with Metal Hammer magazine, Averill stated about “Fire On The Mountain”: “We grew up with and through most of our reference points. This is just what just came out when we play. We didn’t need to go, ‘We need to write songs that sound like MANOWAR,’ but we all love MANOWAR. There’s a fine line to walk between pastiche, parody and putting of the old gonzoid heavy metal charm into it, but not being too self-knowing in that sense.”

Asked if it was weird to switch over to singing classic metal lyrics, and finding out how he related to those lyrics, Averill said: “Definitely. The thing is that it’s full of the gonzoid heavy metal idioms — the swords and the steel and the blood and the fire. It was a difficult balance to find, to strike between being full of a certain glory and beauty and charm of old heavy metal, without it being too wink-wink, nod-nod, self-parody, but really genuinely meaning it because that’s what we all love, and treating it with the sort of kid gloves and respect that it deserves.”

He continued: “But yeah, it was difficult trying to find a different voice, another kind of lyric but at the same time, if you take, say, the title track, ‘Fire On The Mountain’, that’s my Dio tribute and it sounds like a RAINBOW songtitle. But yeah, the song is about the siege of Vienna by the Ottoman empire in 1683 where King Leopold I and the Holy Roman See defeated the Turks, and those, I think, had a lot to do with saving the European culture and the Enlightenment and all sorts of stuff. So if you were to actually look at it, you’d go, ‘Actually, there’s something being said here, but it’s written in heavy metal vernacular, which was handed down to us from IRON MAIDEN and whoever. But it’s a challenge, for sure, and it’s also a challenge to write a chorus that people could sing. You’re sitting there for the first time thinking, actually, how could I write this in such a way for people at a show or at a festival to get behind it, you know? It’s just a traditional, hard-rock structure, which is a breath of fresh air for all of us, because we’ve all, for the past 20 years, been playing extreme music and darker music to some degree, so it’s a bit like something fresh for all of us, despite the fact that it’s all old.”

Former PANTERA and current DOWN frontman Philip Anselmo spoke to U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine about the Joey LaCaze, New Orleans native and drummer for EYEHATEGOD, MYSTICK KREWE OF CLEARLIGHT and OUTLAW ORDER, who passed away on August 23 of respiratory failure. He also suffered from severe long-term asthma.

“It was dreadful news and still is for everyone round here,” remembers Phil. “Honestly, Joey was one of the funniest motherfuckers you could ever meet in your life. He was one of the most down to earth people I’ve ever known, as well as one of the most humbly yet superbly talented drummers I’ve ever had the opportunity to watch play.

“I was at his funeral. It was held at a place in the French quarter called the Voodoo Temple. It was a beautiful ceremony and a moment where we all felt the pain of the loss.

“I’m not a spiritual guy, but when the high priestess was giving her sermon, they passed out tambourines and percussive instruments to all these people that loved him. We went through interludes in these gigantic drum circles in his honor. Tears were streaming down my face, sweating was pouring off the top of my head and I was lost… I had my eyes completely closed and I was beating this drum until my thumb basically got disolocated! I wasn’t paying attention to what was around me; I was thinking about Joey. [EYEHATEGOD frontman] Mike IX Williams was stood next to me, and little did I know, but I was getting sprinkles of blood on my head because he was beating this tambourine with such intensity. He had bloodied up his knuckles and pretty much ruined this tambourine… but we all took it later, wrote messages and buried it with his ashes.

Mike and his wife live above my studio, Nodferatu’s Lair; they’ve been here for almost ten years. We’re twenty feet away from each other, and you know, we’ve been through some tough times together — we both became clean together. I’m around ten years, maybe ten years plus, away from hard drugs and Mike too… I’m very proud of him.

“It was a beautiful ceremony and the perfect sendoff for Joey. But once that happens, there’s always the quietness of the day after. That quietness was like a dagger in our hearts. That was when reality really soaked in…

“It’s been a bit dark and gloomy around here since Joey passed.”

On September 10, Daniel Cairns of Metal Hammer magazine conducted an interview with Karl Sanders of South Carolina-based extreme technical death metallers NILE prior to the band’s concert at The Garage in London, England. You can now watch the chat below.

NILE‘s recent U.S. tour consisted of 28 shows supported by three of the best local bands in every market. NILE played two massive sets with music spanning their prolific, twenty-year career.

NILE‘s seventh full-length album, “At The Gate Of Sethu”, sold 3,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 131 on The Billboard 200 chart. The CD landed at position No. 2 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

In a recent interview with Alarm magazine, Sanders stated about the songwriting process for “At The Gate Of Sethu”: “Every day, after I’d gotten warmed up with a bunch of technique and stuff, I’d sit with the guitar and the lyrics sheet and just start riffing. I’d just play a gazillion riffs. The next day, I’d sit down and sift through them. I had so many riffs for this fucking album. It was insane. You could make a couple of albums out of all of the riffs that got thrown out.”

He continued: “About halfway through the songwriting process, George Kollias, our drummer, sent me an e-mail. He said, ‘Karl, what the fuck are you doing? All these fucking insane time signatures and tempo changes and fucking weird, fucking odd-time riffs. Dude, please! You’re killing me! Will you please just write something like old NILE? Something simple and classic, because you’re driving me crazy with all of this shit.’ So I thought about it for a while, and I was like, ‘There’s some reality to what he said.'”
