Joey Jordison: Slipknot icon

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison has reaffirmed that the Iowa legends are all still planning to release a new album next year, with plenty of material already in the can.

“Whenever I pick up a guitar and I’m not doing anything, I’m always writing riffs,” he tells ArtistDirect. “That’s all we’re doing. We’ve all got a shitload of riffs. We’re always writing. Even though we haven’t gotten together, there’s plenty of material there. We talk to each other all the time on our cell phones and all of that when we’re on tour in different spots of the world. We’re all working. It hasn’t found its time yet. We’re continuing to write though. We’re always writing. We’re going to have so much shit, it might have to be a double record. [laughs].”

Meanwhile, you can check out Joey’s current project thanks to the FREE Scar The Martyr EP that we’re giving away with our brand new issue! Click here to find out how you can get your mitts on it.

Iron Maiden’s Trooper Beer was officially launched last night at a special event at Robinsons Brewery in Cheshire, with esteemed brewing trade representatives from around the globe in attendance.

Taken from

Check out some pics from the event over on the official Iron Maiden website, and stay glued to for more updates on when and where you can expect to lay your grubby mitts on a pint or two of the stuff.

Over a quarter of a million pints have been pre-sold in the UK so far, with over 100 countries set to stock the ale.

“I’m a lifelong fan of traditional English ale; I thought I’d died and gone to heaven when we were asked to create our own beer,” says Bruce Dickinson, who took a hands (and, we suspect, taste)-on approach to the creation of the drink. “I have to say that I was very nervous: Robinsons are the only people I have had to audition for in 30 years. Their magic has been to create the alchemical wedding of flavour and texture that is Trooper. I love it.”

Iron Maiden play Download in June.

Zakk Wylde bloody loves burgers

Zakk Wylde will be teaming up with Grill ‘Em All this Saturday (April 20) to unveil his monstrous and particularly meaty new creation: The Bezerker Burger!

The Bezerker featured two blackened half pound patties, Eagle Rock Solidarity battered onion rings, white truffle pomme frites, chipotle ketchup, cheddar, and thick cut bacon all smothered in chili. It sounds pretty freakin’ delicious, but you’ll have to queue up at 19 E Main Street in Alhambra, California, from 12pm local time on Saturday to get your greasy mitts on one.

“Doing a Zakk Wylde burger is a dream come true for us because the guy is everything we dig about Metal,” said Matt Chernus, co-owner of Grill ‘Em All. “We thought, ‘What would Zakk Wylde like? Um, yeah, beer and spice!’ TWO blackened patties with boozy onion rings, truffle fries, and chipotle ketchup; we know this burg is going to make people meat drunk.”

Ancient Vvisdom: Grave intentions

South By South West, one of the best festivals on the planet, takes over Austin, Texas this week for a barrage of music, art and cultural events. It sounds amazing, and there are tons of great bands playing, so we got our Raz to tell us how it’s all going. Here’s Part One.

After spending the afternoon standing in line, under hot, hot sunshine accumulating all the requisite passes, sunburn, wristbands, high fives and QR codes needed to get entry into all the coolest parties (I need to get all the free booze while I’m here, you understand), I walk around 6th Street with a slice of spicy pepperoni from Hoeks Death Metal Pizza. There’s a thrash band playing on the patio out back. I don’t get their name, but that’s not the point – this is the coolest pizza shop in the world.

After pausing to get a photograph with some excellent and rather contemporaneous guerilla marketing for Ghost/Ghost BC, the first stop for awesome metal bands in Austin is Ancient VVisdom. They play to a half-filled room at The Junior while flash-in-the-pan rap sensation, Macklemore plays to a jam-packed room at The Main, next door. It’s an odd juxtaposition of styles, ethos and delivery – one that highlights exactly what SXSW is all about.

Ghost: Well marketed

I toddle down the road to a pokey little bar called Metal & Lace. It was called Headhunter’s in 2012 and something else the previous year – there’s a high turnover here, guys. While the first band we see, Fed Of Me, is halfway between a Pantera homage and deathcore-by-numbers, headliners, Skrew, get the bar packed. It’s 1am. Some of those staggering around me can barely see the stubby can of Lone Star lager in their greasy mitts, but I reassure them the 90s industrial legends are owning this hometown show.

… Rolling out of bed the next day with a mouth drier than the crust on a $2 chicken-fried steak, I get straight on the lagers. It’s a massive can of Tecate that costs $8, but it’s ok because I’m at the Pitchfork metal day party and there is a fuck ton of awesome bands on. First up are Brooklyn doomsters, Batillus and Brooklyn black metallers, Mutilation Rites. It’s only 2pm but the Mohawk venue is packed and the vibes are strong within the tattooed, cut-off-denim-jacketed, slicked-back-haired masses. Both bands go down a storm because they’re both ruddy excellent. It’s not rocket science, eh?

I try to see Heaven’s Basement on a rooftop, but the show is running an hour behind schedule, sadly, so I declined waiting through an awful funk band from New Zealand in favour of what some have called “Korea’s answer to Guns N’ Roses”, Galaxy Express. The truth of the matter is that despite owning the same name as the most awesome new Samsung Android phone being flogged in the Interactive section of the festival, they’re a psychedelic rock band and they’re bloody good. They’ve travelled over 6000 miles to play an awesome gig outdoors at 1am in a fake cave next to a real creek by the Hilton hotel. This is what SXSW is all about. Good night!
