Resident Rock Star conducted an interview with Ivar Bjørnson, guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of Norwegian progressive/psychedelic black metallers ENSLAVED, on February 11 at the Summit Music Hall in Denver, Colorado. You can now watch the chat below.

ENSLAVED‘s twelfth studio album, “RIITIIR”, sold around 2,300 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 8 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

ENSLAVED‘s previous album, “Axioma Ethica Odini”, opened with 1,400 units back in September 2010 to debut at No. 16 on the Top New Artist Albums chart.

“Describing the sound on the new album is both easy and hard,” ENSLAVED‘s Ivar Bjørnson said. “It is easy because it sounds like ENSLAVED, whatever that means. It is hard because there are so many layers and different focal points. I have a feeling that it has a deeper complexity than our previous efforts, but at the same time, I do find it more catchy and moving. Then again, I am the opposite of objective in this, so again I’ll leave it up to the people outside the band to make up their mind.”

ENSLAVED‘s previous two CDs — “Vertebrae” (2008) and “Axioma Ethica Odini” (2010) — were released via Indie Recordings in Europe and Nuclear Blast in North America.

Rick Horton of The Metallic Onslaught conducted an interview with CHIMAIRA frontman Mark Hunter on August 24 at the Montage Music Hall in Rochester, New York. You can now watch the chat below.

CHIMAIRA‘s seventh studio album, “Crown Of Phantoms”, sold around 7,400 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 52 on The Billboard 200 chart. The record arrived in stores on July 30 via eOne Music.

CHIMAIRA‘s previous CD, “The Age Of Hell”, premiered with more than 7,000 units in August 2011 to debut at No. 54. The band’s 2009 effort, “The Infection”, registered a first-week tally of 15,000 to land at No. 30. This figure was roughly in line with the opening number of CHIMAIRA‘s 2007 album, “Resurrection”, which shifted 16,000 copies to enter the chart at No. 42.

CHIMAIRA recently made headlines by way of crowd-funding a fan version CD/DVD where they doubled their initial goal via IndieGoGo.

In a recent interview with Ghost Cult, singer Mark Hunter stated about CHIMAIRA‘s new CD: “‘Crown Of Phantoms’ is the culmination of three years of going through tons of changes, harsh realities but also excitement. It’s something brand new and when you put all those things together you get ‘Crown Of Phantoms’ as a result. These are exciting times for the band and it’s the polar opposite of where I was with the band two years ago.

Regarding whether he thought of packing it in after the numerous lineup changes that CHIMAIRA went through since the release of 2011’s “The Age Of Hell”, Hunter said: “Many people on the Internet thought we were done for. By the timing and the speed things were unraveling, I had the luxury of not thinking rationally and I simply soldiered on. It was happening so fast and not thinking about quitting was a sort of defense in a way. I defended what I hold dear and what I wanted to fight for. Of course there were moments of insecurity and doubts. Luckily, I had a good team and a good support system of friends and family around me telling me that I was crazy if I wanted to change the band name or quit altogether. They pointed out that bands like MEGADETH and BLACK SABBATH went through countless lineup changes. BLACK SABBATH had a super successful era without Ozzy. Of course, with MEGADETH, ‘Rust In Peace’ was one of their best albums and it wasn’t recorded with the same lineup who did ‘Peace Sells’, which is another MEGADETH classic. There are more examples of bands that went through major lineup changes and still had major success. Of course, to be in this situation is scary as hell.”

Topeka, Kansas based heavy rock band The Midnight Ghost Train will launch a U.S. headlining tour in support of its sophomore LP “Buffalo” on July 18 at the Downtown Music Hall in Little Rock, Arkansas. Released in 2012 via Karate Body Records, “Buffalo” was recorded with producer / engineer David Barbe (Harvey Milk, Son Volt, Drive-By Truckers)

Converge: definitely not stadium rock

Converge lay the London Koko to waste, we send Metal Hammer Podcast host Steve Hill to see it all happen. He came back in one piece and sent us this review….

Even Nostradamus could never have predicted a band with such a fiercely independent spirit, so used to the grim, glamour-less grind of punk rock touring, raised on DIY Hardcore ethics and tiny basement shows in vile, crust filled clubs as Converge would ever sell out a pristine, vaudeville music hall like Camden’s Koko. That they have is a testament to a constant commitment to making their thrilling and visceral music so difficult to ignore.

First though Storm Of Light wow the early birds with an assault on the senses, both visually and aurally. A huge screen at the back of the stage dwarfs them and fills the venue with dizzying Technicolor images to accompany their sludgy post-rock. They take all the bits that you love from The Melvins, Mastodon, Today Is The Day and Neurosis and bang it out with eye-ball popping intensity. Well worth checking out.

Touche Amore receive a welcome that would befit the headline band and do an admiral job of warming up the crowd for what is to come, but they lack the depth and weight of SOL and seem fairly lightweight in comparison. Not that there is anything wrong with any of the set per-se; all the elements are in place, it’s just that it seems a bit anaemic. Bands like Propagandhi and Strike Anywhere perfected this style of super intense Melodic Hardcore over a decade ago and Touche Amore strain for, but never quite reach, their standard. That said, the crowd go nuts and they leave to a deafening cheer. So they’re obviously doing something right.

You could count on no fingers the things that Converge have done wrong in their career. The most original, surprising and consistent band to emerge from the hardcore scene in the last twenty years, possibly ever, are on supreme form tonight. Despite the grandiose surroundings, Jacob Bannon and Co wander on and plug in as if it’s just another day in the rehearsal room and plough straight into a teeth rattling opening double of Concubine and Dead Horse. When this band are in full flow it is quite something to behold, undoubtedly punk but far more spiteful and intense than any Green Day or Clash clone could ever dream of. Whether it’s the slower, more brooding numbers like Worms Will Feed or their thrashier, more brutal cuts such as Hellbound, the quality never drops and it rapidly becomes clear that Converge have a back catalogue to rival almost any scene veterans you would care to mention. The standard of musicianship is quite something, too – not something you would usually associate with punk pock – in particular drummer Ben Koller, who puts in a powerhouse performance of brute force and dexterity, but also from Nate Newton’s rumbling low-end bass and Kurt Ballou’s shredding, screaming guitar. They leave for the first time with an extended and savage version of You Fail Me, which would be enough to satisfy most people.

That they then return and close the night with an incredible rendition of Last Light that is so heavy, so powerful and so dizzying that it terrifies even the most rabid fan and then walk off as if nothing has even happened is all the evidence you need to know Converge are a genuinely life-changing force of nature. Twenty years into their career they are peerless. It may be a surprise to see them become as big as they have but, good god, what a lovely surprise it is. Next time they come back you really should be there, be it smelly club or gleaming arena, it will be fucking epic. Quite frankly you don’t need to be Nostradamus to predict that.
