Relapse Records has announced the signing of New York City avant-garde, technical death metal quartet PYRRHON (pronounced “peer-on”). The band’s sophomore album, “The Mother Of Virtues’, will be released in early 2014.

Formed in 2008, PYRRHON released one EP (“Fever Kingdoms”, 2010) and one LP (“An Excellent Servant But a Terrible Master”, 2011) via The Path Less Traveled Records and Selfmadegod Records, respectively.

A nightmarish blend of clanging death metal with surreal psychedelic elements, jazz rhythms, and delirious storytelling, “The Mother Of Virtues” was tracked and mixed by Ryan Jones (TODAY IS THE DAY, MUTILATION RITES, WETNURSE) at Saint Vitus Bar and The Sound City in Brooklyn in May and June 2013. The record was then mastered by Colin Marston (KRALLICE, GORGUTS) at The Thousand Caves Studios in Brooklyn in August 2013.

Vocalist Doug Moore commented on the signing: “When I was 15, I bought a copy of Relapse‘s ‘Contaminated 5.0’ sampler CD. Through it, I encountered SUFFOCATION, NEUROSIS, PIG DESTROYER, HUMAN REMAINS, and countless other great bands for the first time.

“We are thrilled and honored to work with a label whose output has done so much to drive metal forward, and which has meant so much to all four of us over the years.”

PYRRHON quickly became known for its mind-bending live show, playing with such notable acts as MISERY INDEX, HATE ETERNAL, ORIGIN, TOMBS, LITURGY, CANNABIS CORPSE, BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS and INTER ARMA.

Pelican were doing instrumetal before it was cool, they're basically a hipster instrumtal band… oh, and their new track is awesome!  About seven years ago, I was on a huge post-rock kick, during ISIS's huge moment in the sun, and between Neurosis, Pelican, Isis and some lesser known bands like Red Sparrows, my playlist for …

Josh Graham inaugurated A Storm of Light in 2007, shortly before exiting the band he helped found, Red Sparowes. Having also spent the entirety of that decade moonlighting as a visual artist for erstwhile post-metal kingpins Neurosis, it was perhaps forgivable that Storm started off as a more plodding, less engaging xerox of the two primary bands Graham had cut his …

THE SKULL — the new band featuring original TROUBLE members vocaist Eric Wagner and drummer Jeff “Oly” Olson alongside TROUBLE‘s longtime bassist Ron Holzner and SACRED DAWN guitarists Michael Carpenter and Lothar Keller — peformed at Tequila Jaxx this past Saturday, September 14 in Mentor-On-The-Lake, Ohio. Fan-filmed video footage can be seen below. This was THE SKULL‘s first performance with Olson.

Olson rejoined THE SKULL last month, explaining in a statement: “I know that I’ve mentioned that I wouldn’t perform TROUBLE‘s music anymore unless it’s with the other original members, but I’ve had a change of heart. I want to rock again.

“Although I have been having a great time playing keys for IN-GRAVED (led by former PENTAGRAM guitarist Victor Griffin), I miss the drums and playing classic TROUBLE songs. I’m still going to jam with Victor, but there is room for THE SKULL too.”

He added: “In just a few short months, 2014 will mark the 30th anniversary year for TROUBLE‘s debut record, ‘Psalm 9’. TROUBLE guitarists Rick Wartell and Bruce Franklin are having fun with their new record, and I had fun writing some intros for it. It’s just that Eric, Ron, and myself want to jam too and celebrate our 30th anniversary as well with a tour and a new record. We’ve worked just as hard as Bruce and Rick over the years and we feel that we’ve earned the privilege to celebrate with the fans as well. There is no animosity between the two bands and we intend to keep it that way.”

“We are currently writing a debut record, set for release in 2014 and I’ve already submitted several songs to the guys. Excitement is in the air.”

THE SKULL‘s debut CD will be produced by Billy Anderson (HIGH ON FIRE, SLEEP, NEUROSIS) this autumn in Portland, Oregon and will be released via as-yet-undetermined record label.

THE SKULL is:

Eric Wagner – vocals
Jeff Olson – drums
Ron Holzner – bass
Michael Capenter – guitar
Lothar Keller – guitar

Look, we know that when it comes to gnarly, crust-tinged, heavy-as-fuck hardcore music we’re all a bit spoiled right now. From the scorching mayhem of Trap Them to the thrashy leanings of Enabler all the way through to the catchy punk ‘n’ roll of Kvelertak, there are few subgenres in as rude health in 2013, which is why we’re really not taking it lightly when we suggest that Palm might be the very best of the lot of them.

Formed 13 years ago in Osaka, Japan and weaned on a diet of Slayer, Converge, Entombed, Sepultura and Neurosis, the four-piece have only made it to our shores once so far – way back in 2010 on an extremely well-received if rather brief tour – but with fellow Osaka natives Crossfaith currently blowing up all over the place due to their similarly crushing live shows, more and more Japanese metal bands are beginning to get some deserved attention – and Palm easily sit at the top of the pile.

“Palm was formed just to play heavy and hardcore music,” states frontman Toshihiko Takahashi plainly. “There are good metal bands [inOsakaandJapanin general], but honestly, there’s not a very good scene going on. But, with Crossfaith’s exposure, the new generation are becoming active and I hope that Japanese hardcore and metal music will get more exposure to the world!”

On why Japanese metal has struggled to gain international recognition on a large scale until relatively recently, Toshihiko is certainly in no doubt that it’s not for a lack of trying. “We want to,” he muses, “but a lot just don’t know how, and there’s also the language barrier and lack of connections. I know that we all aim to get out there.”

Judging by last year’s incredible Our Darkest Friends album, which boasts artwork by Converge legend Jacob Bannon, Palm are certainly ready to stake their claim as leaders of the Japanese underground, and their live shows – “impulsive, hard and no-bullshit. Pure live energy” – aren’t to be messed with either. Just get your asses back over to theUKsoon, alright, lads?

“Last time we came, we were able to experience great towns, the people were great and we had a great time,” enthuses the singer. “We always want to come back so we ask all of you to spread our name and bring us back!”

You heard the man. The campaign starts now.

THE SKULL, the band featuring original members of Chicago doom-metal legends TROUBLE, vocalist Eric Wagner and drummer Jeff “Oly” Olson, and the band’s longtime bassist, Ron Holzner, was interviewed on the latest edition of the “Maximum Threshold” radio show. You can now listen to the chat in the YouTube clip below.

Olson announced his decision to rejoin THE SKULL earlier in the month. He explained in a statement: “I know that I’ve mentioned that I wouldn’t perform TROUBLE‘s music anymore unless it’s with the other original members, but I’ve had a change of heart.

Guitarist/vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metallers OPETH has agreed to curate Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday, April 11 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands. As curator, Mikael will personally select the bands for his special event, and play a headline show with OPETH, too!

OPETH‘s body of work is highly respected by Roadburn audiences, which makes Mikael the ideal choice to carry on the tradition that began in 2008 with David Tibet of CURRENT 93, and continued with NEUROSIS, Tom G. Warrior, SUNN 0))), VOIVOD and Jus Oborn of ELECTRIC WIZARD.

“It’s with great honor that I accepted the invitation to be the curator for the 2014 Roadburn festival”, says Mikael Åkerfeldt. “I’m pretty damn far from being a professional booker/promoter, and I’ve never been part in choosing bands for an event apart from bands that OPETH has toured with. So this is a first for me, but I have to say I’m very excited.”

He continued: “I’ve reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present. As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I’m going to be like a kid at Christmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously, OPETH will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn’t get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. It will be remarkable and memorable. A celebration, bitches!”

Beginning a new chapter of their ongoing legacy, Bristol’s psych rock band THE HEADS will follow in the footsteps of ENSLAVED, CIRCLE, Justin K Broadrick and Neige (ALCEST) as Artist In Residence at the 2014 Roadburn Festival.

Roadburn is THE HEADS‘ spiritual home, and they are honoured to be asked to be the Artist in Residence and are excited to have John McBain (of MONSTER MAGNET fame) join them for this and new recordings.

As part of the Artist in Residence, KANDODO will perform as a three-piece on Friday, April 11. THE HEADS will play a live set for the first time with John McBain on Saturday, April 12 at the Main Stage.

Holland’s very own Roadburn Festival has become Europe’s leading festival for psychedelic, avant-metal, doom, heavy ’70s or any other variation of leftfield sonic pleasures that push the boundaries of music.

Roadburn Festival 2014 (including Mikael Åkerfeldt‘s curated event, OPETH and LOOP) will run for four days — from Thursday, April 10 to Sunday, April 13, 2014 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

Pre-sales will start Friday, October 11, 2013.
