Mesopotamian kings of blackened thrash metal MELECHESH have announced the addition of drummer Sasha Horn to the group’s ranks.

Commented MELECHESH mainman, songwriter, singer and guitarist Ashmedi: “After a lengthy search, MELECHESH are proud to announce the inclusion of new drummer Sasha ‘Sin’ Horn. Sin as in the Mesopotamian moon god. He will be appearing on the upcoming album, which we will follow up with more details. Meanwhile, he flew in from the USA to our rehearsal room in Germany to work with the band on new material and meet the label guys and the chemistry was great. His drumming skills will sure bring in an extra kick to the new album.”

Since there were rumors and uncertainties of the current second guitarist of MELECHESH, the pioneering band clarified the situation in the following statement: “After one show, it became obvious things wouldn’t work out with Sirus, so we mutually agreed to go separate ways. For now, the position is not vacant until a great talent crosses our ways. Ashmedi will track guitars and former guitarist and longtime friend Moloch might be flying to the studio for recordings, but not touring as well. We have two great touring guitarist who are friends of ours and will step in as live session musicians.”

MELECHESH is currently writing material for its upcoming sixth album.

The band’s latest CD and Nuclear Blast debut, “The Epigenesis”, was released in 2010 and received rave reviews all over the globe, followed by eight tours with the likes of SEPTICFLESH and NILE.

Resident Rock Star conducted an interview with Ivar Bjørnson, guitarist, songwriter, and founding member of Norwegian progressive/psychedelic black metallers ENSLAVED, on February 11 at the Summit Music Hall in Denver, Colorado. You can now watch the chat below.

ENSLAVED‘s twelfth studio album, “RIITIIR”, sold around 2,300 copies in the United States in its first week of release. The CD landed at position No. 8 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

ENSLAVED‘s previous album, “Axioma Ethica Odini”, opened with 1,400 units back in September 2010 to debut at No. 16 on the Top New Artist Albums chart.

“Describing the sound on the new album is both easy and hard,” ENSLAVED‘s Ivar Bjørnson said. “It is easy because it sounds like ENSLAVED, whatever that means. It is hard because there are so many layers and different focal points. I have a feeling that it has a deeper complexity than our previous efforts, but at the same time, I do find it more catchy and moving. Then again, I am the opposite of objective in this, so again I’ll leave it up to the people outside the band to make up their mind.”

ENSLAVED‘s previous two CDs — “Vertebrae” (2008) and “Axioma Ethica Odini” (2010) — were released via Indie Recordings in Europe and Nuclear Blast in North America.

Part two of a track-by-track breakdown of “Pariah’s Child”, the eighth studio album from Finnish melodic metallers SONATA ARCTICA, can be seen below. The CD will be released on March 28 via Nuclear Blast. The cover artwork for the effort can be seen below.

“Pariah’s Child” track listing:

01. The Wolves Die Young
02. Running Lights
03. Take One Breath
04. Cloud Factory
05. Blood
06. What Did You Do In The War, Dad?
07. Half A Marathon Man
08. X Marks The Spot
09. Love
10. Larger Than Life

SONATA ARCTICA vocalist/keyboardist Tony Kakko stated about the song “Cloud Factory”, the lyric video for which can be seen below: “It has some kind of an ear-worm factor. It’s not a bad thing to have in a single. A story about how dad already sees his young son going to work in the same factory he still goes and where his dad and dad’s dad went before him, and how that pleasantly vicious circle never ends.”

“The Wolves Die Young” video can be seen below. The clip was filmed in January at Sibelius House in Lahti, Finland and was produced by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

Commented Tony Kakko: “There are some instant SONATA ‘greatest-hits’ songs there, which feels good.

“I think we reached the result we had in mind, each of us in our own field.

“We went on to create the next SONATA ARCTICA power metalesque album and I think we achieved it adequately.

“I have to say that I had drifted pretty far away from those ‘days of thunder,’ that speedy, happy-go-lucky attitude.

“I was happy to notice this style can still make me smile. It’s good. Music has to do that to me. It also shows the other older songs in a totally new light for me.

“I can now understand and appreciate why the fans enjoy what we did in the early days.”

Regarding the new CD title and cover artwork, Kakko said: “As always, it’s pretty hard coming up with a name for the new baby. I tried to approach it from many angles; how this is our eighth album and how easy it would be to abuse that fact. All the symbolism of figure eight, eternity and so on. But that just did not feel right, as it’s been done so many times. Then I started to think how we’d in ways abandoned our ‘totem animal,’ the wolf and all what comes with the territory.

“As the music on the album is bowing more towards the ‘old’ SONATA, meaning more power metal-style elements and wolves in many of the songs in one form or another, it was clear we need a wolf on the cover. An abandoned wolf. A pariah. Or pariah’s child, actually. The new generation to bring the old logo back.”

SONATA ARCTICA last August parted ways with bassist Marko Paasikoski and replaced him with Pasi Kauppinen (SILENT VOICES, ex-REQUIEM, WINTERBORN).

The band will launch a European headlining tour in support of “Pariah’s Child” on April 10 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

San Francisco Bay Area metallers MACHINE HEAD entered GREEN DAY‘s Oakland, California’s JingleTown Recording compound on February 9 to begin recording their new album for a late 2014 release via Nuclear Blast Entertainment.

The first in a series of short segments regarding the production side of making MACHINE HEAD‘s new CD can be seen below.

Tentative songtitles set to appear on the new MACHINE HEAD album include “Killers & Kings”, “Beneath The Silt”, “Eyes Of The Dead” (formerly “Ojos De La Muerte”), “Sail Into The Black”, How We Die” and “Night Of The Long Knives”.

As part of this year’s Record Store Day on April 19, MACHINE HEAD will release a 10-inch vinyl single, with the A-side containing the “demo” version of a new song, “Killers & Kings”. The B-side will be a cover version of the track “Our Darkest Days” from one of MACHINE HEAD‘s favorite bands, IGNITE.

Speaking to U.K.’s Metal Hammer magazine, MACHINE HEAD frontman Robb Flynn stated about the band’s new material: “It sounds like MACHINE HEAD! It’s definitely moving forward, which I feel like we’re probably always gonna do.

“We’re not a band that ever looks back. We do our thing and try to take the life experiences that we have and the musicianship that we’ve evolved and try to use it. Obviously, we have our sound and we have the MACHINE HEAD patented harmonics, the downtuned riffs and I sing the way I sing.

“I think Bob Dylan said it best: ‘You just find new ways to say the same thing.’”

Speaking about some of the specific tracks and the lyrical themes covered on the new album, Flynn said: “I’ve got some pretty cool lyrics ready. There’s a song called ‘Night Of The Long Knives’, and it’s pretty fucked! It’s about the Manson murders, and the lyrics are really dark and vicious.

“We’ve found some new twists to give to the MACHINE HEAD sound and some new fire and excitement.”

Asked what the band’s main aims were when they started composing music for the new CD, Flynn said: “Well, it’s nice to try and have a plan, but music has a way of unravelling over time! [Laughs] You’ve just got to roll with it.

“With [2007's] ‘The Blackening’, I’d love to say I had this grand vision of nine- and 10-minute songs, but the first four songs we wrote were the four shorter songs on the record. For months, there was no indication whatsoever that we’d have 10-minute songs. That stuff came later.

“Human nature wants to control and dictate where things will go, but you can’t. It won’t let you! The more you try, the more it goes, ‘Fuck you.’ It’s going some other way!”
