PALMS, the Los Angeles-based band featuring three former members of ISIS with DEFTONES‘ frontman Chino Moreno, premiered the outfit’s first music video, for the song “Future Warrior”. Check it out below. The five-minute clip, directed by Jon Mancinetti, perfectly encapsulates the visual elements that have accompanied the PALMS debut album’s release: a breezy Southern California landscape with rugged mountains and swaying palm trees.

PALMS released its self-titled debut album in June, with Spin describing “Palms” as “the slow-orbiting-rocket float of ‘Oceanic’-era ISIS painted in soft colors, now with the gushing, soaring melodies that would work on an older sibling’s mixtape next to CURE, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, US, or DEPECHE MODE” and Revolver proclaiming the album a “dreamy, swooning… masterpiece.”

The quartet played its first live shows in July, with four headlining dates on the West Coast followed by a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, as SYSTEM OF A DOWN‘s hand-picked openers.

PALMS came together following the demise of ISIS, with Jeff Caxide (bass), Aaron Harris, (drums) and Clifford Meyer (keyboards/guitar) electing to continue playing music together. “After a little time Jeff, Cliff, and I decided that it was insane that we all still lived here in Los Angeles and weren’t playing together,” Harris says. “It just sort of happened naturally, probably because we have been playing together for so long, and things started to come together. But we didn’t want to be instrumental: We wanted vocals. We just weren’t exactly sure who that would be at first.” The band, knowing that Moreno had been a fan of ISIS, thought he would be a great fit and he agreed. “A chance to work with the guys from ISIS sounded like a lot of fun,” Moreno says, “I’ve always been into the atmospheric sounds they had created with that project and felt my sense of melody would meld well with theirs.”

We've had some interesting supergroups this year like Palms and Scar the Martyr, but Teenage Time Killer is an entirely new breed… mainly because there are guest appearances from a slew of legendary musicians and only two core members. All I'm saying is that picture of Randall Blythe with Corrosion of Conformity comes into play …

Pedigree doesn't grow on trees: three members of new LA quartet Palms cut their teeth in the now-splintered Isis, with the fourth being none other than Deftones frontman Chino Moreno. Do I have your attention? Palms doesn't necessarily toy with expectations, giving us more or less what we would anticipate from the pairing: lush, "mature" post-rock instrumentation overlaid with Moreno's lilting …

We've been heavily anticipating the Palms debut. We got our first full taste of a track weeks ago and now the band released a new trailer highlighting the album: I was lucky enough to get an advance of the album earlier this week, and unfortunately was not super impressed. I'll try to listen to it …
