Drummer Mike Portnoy (THE WINERY DOGS, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ADRENALINE MOB) was interviewed on last night’s (Friday, August 23) edition of Eddie Trunk‘s “Eddie Trunk Rocks” radio show on New York’s Q104.3 FM.

Asked if he has heard the new, self-titled album from his former bandmates in DREAM THEATER and what he thought of it, Portnoy replied: “I haven’t heard the album. I know it’s out there and I know they’ve been promoting it and I’ve seen a lot of the interviews. And, you know… It seems like there’s a lot of excitement about it, but I really can’t comment beyond that.”

He continued: “I actually got a really nice text today from Jordan [Rudess, DREAM THEATER keyboardist], and got a nice text a few weeks ago from John Petrucci [DREAM THEATER guitarist], so it seems like the air is clearing and the dust is settling. Which I would love nothing more than for us to all be one happy family and friends again, so… We’ll see. But I’m doing this ‘Progressive Nation’ cruise next year and Jordan e-mailed me to congratulate me on that, and they also heard about [the success of] THE WINERY DOGS album, and they were congratulating me on that. So it’s nice to be in good spirits with at least a couple of the guys.”

DREAM THEATER singer James LaBrie recently ruled out the possibility of a reunion with Mike, saying that Portnoy‘s replacement, Mike Mangini, “will be our drummer until the day that we finish doing this.”

On July 30, Portnoy was asked by Chile’s Radio Futuro whether he would one day be willing to reunite with DREAM THEATER and rejoin the band as their drummer. “Sure,” he replied. “I would do it in a heartbeat. They are the ones that have closed the door on it. I’ve only needed a break, and I’ve had that break. So I’m ready, willing and able. But I honestly don’t think they ever will; they’ve closed their door on it and I think they’re too headstrong in having to prove themselves without me. So I wouldn’t count on it. But my door is always open.”

In an interview conducted earlier this month on the same radio station, LaBrie was asked to respond to Portnoy‘s comments. “That possibility, I don’t see it ever happening; it’s not gonna happen,” the singer replied. “Because, first and foremost, Mike Mangini is a full-fledged member of the band now, he’s a phenomenal drummer and he’s doing everything that we could possibly want as a drummer in a band. He’s helping us realize exactly what we wanna do right now musically. And he will be our drummer until the day that we finish doing this, when we conclude. Mike Portnoy was a big part of our past, but I think that’s where it’s going to remain. He was a drummer from the past. And as far as presently and into the future, it will be Mike Mangini, and we all feel very strongly about that. He’s an incredible drummer, he’s an incredible asset to the band, and he is fulfilling our wildest dreams as far as what we’re doing musically and what we’re doing with each album. So that’s the way it stands.”

Portnoy, who co-founded DREAM THEATER more than 27 years ago, abruptly quit the band in September 2010 while on tour with AVENGED SEVENFOLD. He has since been replaced by Mike Mangini (ANNIHILATOR, EXTREME, JAMES LABRIE, STEVE VAI).

Portnoy played on AVENGED SEVENFOLD‘s latest album, “Nightmare”, following the death of that band’s drummer, Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan, and toured with them for the entire second half of 2010.

Portnoy announced his departure from ADRENALINE MOB in June due to “scheduling conflicts.” A replacement drummer has not yet been announced.

3 has completed work on the band’s new album, “The Ghost You Gave to Me.” The album was recorded at Applehead Studios (Coheed and Cambria, Morningwood, Straylight Run) in Woodstock, NY. Metal Blade Records commented on the creation of the album:

“Following the release of ‘Revisions’ and after several tours with Porcupine Tree and an epic run on the first Progressive Nation Tour with Dream Theater, Opeth and Between the Buried and Me, 3 returned home brimming with inspiration. Joey Eppard, Billy Riker, Daniel Grimsland and The Gartdrumm immediately began creating demos of ideas that would evolve into ‘The Ghost You Gave to Me.’ It wasn’t long before the songs took on a life of their own. The band found themselves growing out of the standard rock compositional format into something more cinematic in nature.”

Joey Eppard adds: “The songs told us where to go and the instrumentation followed. We knew this record would be our most progressive but it would be on our terms, and in our own way. As always songwriting and melody are the driving forces behind the sounds capes we generate. I think the biggest challenge was to rise to the occasion lyrically with so many musical scene changes. What I found was that I had to let go and allow the words and melody to be as creative and original as the music, if not more so. In a progressive situation this can be time consuming and indeed the bulk of my efforts were focused on exceeding my own lyrical standards. For example, ‘Only Child,’ an eight minute epic that traverses a myriad of musical scenes has enough great lyrics for half a record.”

“The Ghost You Gave to Me” is set for release on October 11th and the track listing is as follows:

1. Sirenum Scopuli
2. React
3. Sparrow
4. High Times
5. Numbers
6. One With the Sun
7. The Ghost You Gave to Me
8. Pretty
9. Afterglow
10. It’s Alive
11. Only Child
12. The Barrier

3 will be touring the east coast in September alongside Within Temptation. Details are as follows:

09/07 Toronto, ON The Sound Academy
09/08 Montreal, QC Metropolis
09/09 Worcester, MA Palladium
09/10 New York, NY Terminal 5
09/12 Baltimore, MD Ram’s Head Live
