Former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman recently spoke to Gear Gods about his first piece of gear. Check out the clip below.

Friedman will release “Inferno”, his first solo album of original material in four years, in late May via Prosthetic Records (except in Japan, where the album will be released by Universal Music). The CD was recorded primarily in Los Angeles with engineer Chris Rakestraw (DANZIG, CHILDREN OF BODOM) and mixed by Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH) — features what Friedman recently told Guitar World is “the most intense writing and playing I can do.” The album also includes notable guest appearances by several artists influenced by Friedman, including flamenco/metal acoustic guitar duo RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, CHILDREN OF BODOM frontman Alexi Laiho, SKYHARBOR mastermind Keshav Dhar and REVOCATION guitar whiz David Davidson, as well as Friedman‘s first songwriting collaboration with Jason Becker since the pair played together in CACOPHONY, the pioneering duo of guitar mayhem.

Today Pitchfork.com hosts the exclusive premiere of “Starless Midnight” from celestial doom doers Ides of Gemini. The tune comes off of the eclectic West Coast trio’s forthcoming new full-length, “Constantinople.” Called “darkly beautiful” by Pitchfork, the nine-track offering was produced by Ides of Gemini and engineered and mixed by Chris Rakestraw (Danzig, Skeletonwitch) at Sunset Lodge Recording in Los Angeles.

Notes guitarist/backing vocalist J. Bennett of the first single: “‘Starless Midnight’ was the last song written for Constantinople, but it might be our current favorite. I wrote the music while flat on my back on a sofa bed because I couldn’t walk at the time — long story. I nicked the title from a line in Martin Luther King’s Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, which he delivered in Oslo, Norway, on December 10, 1964. The lyrics have nothing to do with Dr. King, though. They were written by [vocalist/bassist] Sera, who I’m sure would prefer to leave the meaning open to interpretation. But I think I can safely say that it’s a song about being in the dark.”
