Part two of a track-by-track breakdown of “Pariah’s Child”, the eighth studio album from Finnish melodic metallers SONATA ARCTICA, can be seen below. The CD will be released on March 28 via Nuclear Blast. The cover artwork for the effort can be seen below.

“Pariah’s Child” track listing:

01. The Wolves Die Young
02. Running Lights
03. Take One Breath
04. Cloud Factory
05. Blood
06. What Did You Do In The War, Dad?
07. Half A Marathon Man
08. X Marks The Spot
09. Love
10. Larger Than Life

SONATA ARCTICA vocalist/keyboardist Tony Kakko stated about the song “Cloud Factory”, the lyric video for which can be seen below: “It has some kind of an ear-worm factor. It’s not a bad thing to have in a single. A story about how dad already sees his young son going to work in the same factory he still goes and where his dad and dad’s dad went before him, and how that pleasantly vicious circle never ends.”

“The Wolves Die Young” video can be seen below. The clip was filmed in January at Sibelius House in Lahti, Finland and was produced by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

Commented Tony Kakko: “There are some instant SONATA ‘greatest-hits’ songs there, which feels good.

“I think we reached the result we had in mind, each of us in our own field.

“We went on to create the next SONATA ARCTICA power metalesque album and I think we achieved it adequately.

“I have to say that I had drifted pretty far away from those ‘days of thunder,’ that speedy, happy-go-lucky attitude.

“I was happy to notice this style can still make me smile. It’s good. Music has to do that to me. It also shows the other older songs in a totally new light for me.

“I can now understand and appreciate why the fans enjoy what we did in the early days.”

Regarding the new CD title and cover artwork, Kakko said: “As always, it’s pretty hard coming up with a name for the new baby. I tried to approach it from many angles; how this is our eighth album and how easy it would be to abuse that fact. All the symbolism of figure eight, eternity and so on. But that just did not feel right, as it’s been done so many times. Then I started to think how we’d in ways abandoned our ‘totem animal,’ the wolf and all what comes with the territory.

“As the music on the album is bowing more towards the ‘old’ SONATA, meaning more power metal-style elements and wolves in many of the songs in one form or another, it was clear we need a wolf on the cover. An abandoned wolf. A pariah. Or pariah’s child, actually. The new generation to bring the old logo back.”

SONATA ARCTICA last August parted ways with bassist Marko Paasikoski and replaced him with Pasi Kauppinen (SILENT VOICES, ex-REQUIEM, WINTERBORN).

The band will launch a European headlining tour in support of “Pariah’s Child” on April 10 in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

He emerged as an up-and-coming talent with the groups DREAM EVIL (Sweden), MYSTIC PROPHECY (Germany) and NIGHTRAGE (Greece), but it is his work with his own band FIREWIND (who have released seven studio albums and two live releases) and as a member of Ozzy Osbourne‘s band that have helped him emerge as one of the world’s top metal and rock guitarists. His work on Ozzy‘s “Scream” album led to a Grammy nomination in 2010, and his list of accolades includes Guitar Player magazine’s “Best Metal Guitarist,” the “Dimebag Darrell Shredder” award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, and Metal Hammer Greece “Best Guitarist” on four separate occasions.

Kirsti Heitz of MetalMasterKingdom.com conducted an interview with vocalist Mikael Stanne of Swedish death metallers DARK TRANQUILLITY on February 8 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. You can now watch the chat below.

On its North American tour, DARK TRANQUILLITY sold a seven-inch EP entitled “A Memory Construct”, which will also be released digitally in the beginning of March. Recorded during the “Construct” sessions, the single contains the two songs, is limited to 500 copies worldwide and is available on a transparent red wax. “Sounds Of A Playground Fading”, the video for the title track of the tenth studio album from Swedish metallers IN FLAMES, can be seen below. The clip, which is made up of concert footage, was produced by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

IN FLAMES will play a very special show at the Gröna Lund amusement park in Stockholm, Sweden on September 27. Gröna Lund had in fact closed their park for the season, but when they got word that IN FLAMES was available, they decided to re-open the park, just for this concert.

“Sounds Of A Playground Fading” (Century Media) sold around 14,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 27 on The Billboard 200 chart.

IN FLAMES‘ previous album, “A Sense of Purpose” (Koch) opened with 20,000 units to land at No. 28. This was slightly less than the opening tally of “Come Clarity” (Ferret), which shifted just under 24,000 copies in February 2006 to enter the chart at position No. 58.

“Sounds Of A Playground Fading” was the first IN FLAMES album to be recorded without founding guitarist Jesper Strömblad, who quit the band in February 2010 in order to continue receiving treatment for his alcohol addiction.

IN FLAMES guitarist Niclas Engelin recently sat out a few of the band’s shows. His temporary replacement for those gigs was Patrik Jensen from THE HAUNTED.

The video for “Point Zero Solution”, the title track of the third album from Swedish melodic death metallers DEALS DEATH, can be seen below. The clip was directed by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

Comments DEALS DEATH guitarist Erik Jacobson: “‘Point Zero Solution’ introduces the factors that lie behind a weakened society, a failed state. The lyrics deal with our human behaviour and our quest for comfort and luxury, at any cost.”

DEALS DEATH vocalist and lyricist Olle Ekman says about the album as a whole. “It’s a step-by-step description of the process which breaks down the systems of nature and society, our false hopes, our credulity towards authority and the belief in eternal growth.”

“Point Zero Solution” will be released on September 13 via Spinefarm Records. The CD, which was forged in the deep woods of Grangärde, Sweden, “contains 11 songs packed with a lyrical edge, delivered with all our blood, sweat and toil,” says the band.

Having introduced themselves to a wider audience with last year’s “Elite”, the new CD shows DEALS DEATH‘s staying power and musical evolution with lush arrangements, deadlier output through and through and melodic hooks catchier than ever before.

“Point Zero Solution” track listing:

01. Point Zero Solution
02. Facing The Echoes
03. Escalation
04. Flatline
05. Passion For Infinity
06. The Separation
07. Paramount Authority
08. Beyond Reason
09. Dark Dream Dawn
10. Back To Consciousness
11. Author Of Arts

The story of DEALS DEATH began in a music college called Boomtown, where guitarist Erik Jacobson met a couple of other students. With some further twists to the story, with which we need not bother, the band released its self-financed debut, “Internal Demons”, in 2009 to rave reviews.

In 2009, DEALS DEATH recruited new members in Gothenburg and made the city their base. The second album, “Elite”, was recorded in May 2010 in Gothenburg and mixed by Jonas Kjellgren (SCAR SYMMETRY). A promo video was shot for the song “Fortified” and released in April 2011. The clip made waves on the metal scene (surpassing already half a million views) and then, a fortuitous bounce launched DEALS DEATH to a larger-than-just-metal audience, when vocalist Olle Ekman‘s ‘Death Metal Vocal Exercises” video became a surprise YouTube hit.

Swedish melodic death metallers DARK TRANQUILLITY have issued the following update:

“As most of you know, we’re hard at work preparing the live set for the upcoming ‘Construct’ touring cycle. Spirits are high and we’re confident that we have a lot of very special shows ahead of us. Those of you located on the North American continent will be pleased to know that we’ll announce some good news tomorrow.

“On another note: Those of you who have seen us play this year might have noticed that we haven’t had a bass player on stage.

‘Construct’ was written and recorded as a five-piece, and since the band chemistry is at an all-time high and we’ve never been the ones to shy away from new creative solutions, we wanted to try out playing with the bass on a backing track as opposed to bringing more flesh and blood to the fold. Much to our delight, the results have been great, and we have decided for now to let the band be represented on stage by the five people who have spent a total of more than 100 years in the service of DARK TRANQUILLITY.”

DARK TRANQUILLITY‘s tenth studio album, “Construct”, was released on May 27 via Century Media Records. The CD was mixed by Jens Bogren (PARADISE LOST, OPETH, KATATONIA) at his Fascination Street studios in Örebro, Sweden.

DARK TRANQUILLITY filmed a music video for the song “Uniformity” on April 13 with Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

In a recent interview with Louder Than Hell, DARK TRANQUILLITY guitarist Niklas Sundin stated about “Construct”: “A typical effect of being locked up in a studio for 2-3 months listening to every single second of the new songs over and over again is that you’re getting extremely tired of the material. At the same time as you know that you’ve created something great, there’s a part of you that never want to hear the songs again. Also, the collaborative and democratic nature of DARK TRANQUILITY means that there always are riffs and ideas that a single member doesn’t find too interesting according to his personal preferences, so what normally happens directly after a studio session is that I sit down and think that the result is OK, but if X and Y would have been done differently, it would have been even better (again: for my own tastes). In this case, there were two main parameters that were different: The members’ opinions on the material were a bit more uniform — i.e. no great clashes in taste — and the actual mixing process brought out a lot of details and nuances in the songs that we previously weren’t aware of. The result is that I for a change actually was a massive fan of ‘Construct’ from the first time I heard the final mix.”

Asked if the band had a direction or “game plan” when entering the studio to make “Construct”, Niklas said: “There never is a defined game plan as such; we usually start writing songs without knowing exactly where the music will take us. Every time we’ve tried to decide that the next album should go in a certain direction, it usually ends up being the complete opposite, ha ha! This time, though, we all were certain that we needed to do something different in order to find the motivation to even make a new album. It’s a similar situation to the one before ‘Projector’ (1999) where we either could split up or do something new, and from that realization we actually succeeded in reinventing ourselves.”
