On March 15, Project Alpha TV conducted an interview with Swedish metallers AVATAR at this year’s Hammerfest, which was held at Hafan y Mor Holiday Park, Caernarfonshire and Merionethshire, Wales. You can now watch the chat below.

AVATAR‘s new album, “Hail The Apocalypse”, will be released on May 16 via Gain Music in Europe and May 13 through eOne in USA. The CD was recorded in Karma Sound Studios, Bang Saray, Thailand, mixed by Jay Ruston (STONE SOUR, ANTHRAX, STEEL PANTHER) and mastered by Paul Logus (VOLBEAT, CLUTCH, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE).

AVATAR is described by many as a perfect mix between RAMMSTEIN, ALICE COOPER and SYSTEM OF A DOWN — something the band has now developed further with the video for “Hail The Apocalypse”.

“Hail The Apocalypse” track listing:

01. Hail The Apocalypse
02. What I Don’t Know
03. Death Of Sound
04. Vultures Fly
05. Bloody Angel
06. Murderer
07. Tsar Bomba
08. Puppet Show
09. Get In Line
10. Something In the Way
11. Tower

Vocalist Johannes Eckerström comments on the “Hail The Apocalypse” video, which can be seen below: “This is our best video to date. I play your friendly neighborhood doomsday prophet. You get to follow me facing the unbelievers and their reactions when chaos ensues. Good times all around and we are using some really amazing special effects to blow up the planet. Oh, and it’s done like a silent movie.”

The visually stimulating “Hail The Apocalypse” album cover has also been reveled. It vividly depicts the band steering their ship through a storm on the open sea with the apocalypse happening all around them. They’re facing it, riding the waves and taking on whatever comes their way. To the band, it symbolizes the time in the darkness that made these songs.

AVATAR gained much attention when it comes to its creativity in videos, which are always produced by the bandmembers themselves.

Since the release of the band’s last CD, “Black Waltz”, AVATAR has had massive success all over the world. The singles “Smells Like A Freakshow” and “Let It Burn” peaked on No. 26 on U.S. commercial rock radio charts, where they also stayed for several weeks well ahead of more established bands in the scene. This was followed by extensive and successful U.S. tours.

The biggest break through came when AVENGED SEVENFOLD personally picked AVATAR as support band on their sold-out arena tour in Europe late 2013. AVATAR got a reception far beyond expected by the crowds, which resulted in bookings on high profiled festivals such as Download festival and Rock On The Range in 2014, among own headline dates of which most are soon sold out.

Pollstar.com recently conducted an interview with vocalist Michael Starr (real name Ralph Saenz; ex-L.A. GUNS) of Los Angeles glam-metal jokesters STEEL PANTHER. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Pollstar.com: Pollstar has a lot of STEEL PANTHER fans. But because we’re in Fresno, and STEEL PANTHER is from Los Angeles — and a lot of us have gone to your shows — we took it for granted and we should have done this interview earlier.

Starr: Well, I think you’ve waited for the perfect time. Now we are officially no longer a cover band at all. This past September, we quit doing the residency thing and just put all our eggs into the touring basket and we’ll see what’s going to happen.

Pollstar.com: Well, what is happening? How’s it going?

Starr: So far, everything’s sold out so I think we made the right choice. Plus there’s way more variety of chicks around the world than Vegas and L.A. We pretty much get stuck in a rut jamming in Vegas and L.A. — which are killer markets to play and every band would die to do what we did — but now we’re going around the world. Man, we went to Russia this year and, fuckin’, the girls are so hot!

Pollstar.com: It’s great that you’re doing originals exclusively, but isn’t some of your appeal doing things like riffing on three chords and showing the audience how many songs use them?

Starr: We haven’t lost anything that we did in the residencies. We’re just doing original music instead of playing BON JOVI in between our banter. I think the appeal, all around the world, is that people fucking want to have fun, they want to have a laugh. But they also want what we offer, which is we’re all craftsmen on our instruments. We’re not just actors up there cracking jokes and can’t play. The songs on the record are killer, I can sing almost as good as Steve Perry — when I’m lip-syncing — and people like that.

Pollstar.com: Does this mean you’re going to be touring, like, forever?

Starr: You know what? You’re talking to me from the old model, and I get where you’re coming from. And it was really hard for us to break what we were doing because we built a career out of doing these residencies and we all bought houses, and we all have lives and we have expenses. It was really hard for us to cut the umbilical cord and go for it. So basically what we are doing is we’re cutting the cord, and we’re swinging for a grand slam. We’re putting everything into it and so far it’s been paying off.

Quality fan-filmed video footage of STEEL PANTHER‘s March 12 performance at 013 in Tilburg, The Netherlands can be seen below.

STEEL PANTHER is the ’80s metal/hard rock tribute band formerly known as METAL SKOOL. Onstage, the band both pays tribute to and lampoons the heyday of ’80s glam metal. The group’s between-song comedy includes jests at conflict between bandmembers, discussions of drugs, sex, and improvised humor with the crowd.

Regarding naysayers that say STEEL PANTHER is a joke-metal band, the group’s drummer Stix Zadinia told the South Bend Tribune: “Listen to our record and tell us that our songs aren’t better than most of the bands out there. How funny is that? At the end of the day, it comes down to the songs. I think our songs — without sounding egotistical — I think our songs are great. When you hear the hooks in our songs, you hear the playing and you hear the vocals, you throw that up against any band in any era, and I think it stands up.”

STEEL PANTHER will release its third full-length album, “All You Can Eat”, in the United States on April 1 on Open E Records via Kobalt Label Services (KLS). The 12-song CD, which was produced by Jay Ruston (ANTHRAX, ADRENALINE MOB), is available for pre-order at SteelPantherRocks.com.

The cover artwork, pictured below, was designed by Gustavo Sazes (ARCH ENEMY, KAMELOT, DREAM EVIL).

The video for the album’s opening track, “My Will Be Done” (featuring Mats Levén), was produced by Patric Ullaeus of Revolver Film Company, who has previously worked with DIMMU BORGIR, LACUNA COIL, IN FLAMES, SONIC SYNDICATE and KAMELOT, among others.

Gus handles all guitar, bass and keyboards on “I Am The Fire”, and is joined by a roster of friends and guests that help bring his vision to fruition: drummers Jeff Friedl (A PERFECT CIRCLE, PUSCIFER, DEVO) and Daniel Erlandsson (ARCH ENEMY), bassists David Ellefson (MEGADETH), Billy Sheehan (MR. BIG, DAVID LEE ROTH) and Marty O’Brien (TOMMY LEE, WE ARE THE FALLEN, LITA FORD), and vocalists Mats Levén (CANDLEMASS, ex-YNGWIE MALMSTEEN, THERION), Blake Allison (DEVOUR THE DAY), Michael Starr (STEEL PANTHER), Alexia Rodriguez (EYES SET TO KILL), Tom S. A few of the album’s tracks include “Eyes Wide Open”, “Redemption”, “End Of The Line” and “Blame It On Me”. The album showcases a well-balanced mix of active rock, classic hard rock, traditional metal and guitar-driven instrumentals, taking listeners on a diverse journey and opening doors to Gus G.‘s soulful playing.

Gus G. has had an amazing rise within the worldwide rock and metal scenes and has amassed an impressive body of work, both in studio and touring. He emerged as an up-and-coming talent with the groups DREAM EVIL (Sweden), MYSTIC PROPHECY (Germany) and NIGHTRAGE (Greece), but it is his work with his own band FIREWIND (who have released seven studio albums and two live releases) and as a member of Ozzy Osbourne‘s band that have helped him emerge as one of the world’s top metal and rock guitarists. His work on Ozzy‘s “Scream” album led to a Grammy nomination in 2010, and his list of accolades includes Guitar Player magazine’s “Best Metal Guitarist,” the “Dimebag Darrell Shredder” award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards, and Metal Hammer Greece “Best Guitarist” on four separate occasions.

On September 16, Louder! Magazine conducted an interview with drummer Mike Portnoy (THE WINERY DOGS, DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ADRENALINE MOB) after THE WINERY DOGS‘ headlining concert La Maroquinerie in Paris, France. You can now watch the chat below.

THE WINERY DOGS‘ self-titled debut album sold around 10,200 copies in the United States in its first week of release to land at position No. 27 on The Billboard 200 chart. Released in North America on July 23 via Loud & Proud Records and in Japan on May 15 via Victor Entertainment, the CD was mixed by Jay Ruston, who has previously worked with ANTHRAX, ADRENALINE MOB, STONE SOUR and STEEL PANTHER.

“Bands like [LED] ZEPPELIN and THE WHO, THE [ROLLING] STONES, and THE BEATLES, CREAM, and [Jimi] Hendrix. I mean, I grew up with that stuff,” Portnoy told Voice Of America. “And, although I’ve been able to pay tribute to it throughout my career with tribute bands and things like that, I’ve never been in an all-original band that was kind of playing classic rock power trio stuff. That’s how I describe this band: just a straight-up rock band.”

Regarding the songwriting process for THE WINERY DOGS‘ album, Portnoy said: “In all cases, the music was the very first element and from there, Richie would start melodies on top of it. Sometimes the final lyrics were there, coming up on the spot, and other times he would take the melodies and write lyrics later. There were a couple of examples of Richie having something and bringing it in. In those cases, like ‘Damaged’ and ‘Regret’, we just left them. Because in those two particular cases, the songs were great as they were.”

Portnoy was full of praise for his THE WINERY DOGS bandmates, telling Voice Of America: “Billy Sheehan is my favorite bass player on earth and he has been for almost 30 years now. So to work with him and make music with him for me is an honor. And Richie is someone I have the utmost respect for as an artist. I mean, he is just so underappreciated, not only as a guitarist, but as a singer and a writer as well. I think for me, the most exciting aspect of this band is for people to discover Richie that aren’t aware of what a musical genius he is.”

KILL DEVIL HILL — the band featuring legendary drummer Vinny Appice (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, HEAVEN & HELL) alongside Rex Brown (PANTERA, DOWN) on bass, Mark Zavon (RATT, W.A.S.P., 40 CYCLE HUM) on guitar and Jason “Dewey” Bragg (PISSING RAZORS) on vocals — will release its sophomore album, “Revolution Rise”, in North America on October 29 via Century Media Records. The CD was produced by KILL DEVIL HILL and Jeff Pilson (DOKKEN, FOREIGNER, DIO) and was mixed by Jay Ruston (STONE SOUR, ANTHRAX, STEEL PANTHER). The cover artwork was created by Sam Shearon, who has previously worked with ROB ZOMBIE, IRON MAIDEN and FEAR FACTORY, to name just a few.

Says Brown of the new album: “This new KILL DEVIL HILL record is definitely one of my favorite moments of my career — it’s got balls, great melodies, awesome guitar riffing and a low end that’ll set your ass on fire! The album far exceeds our wildest expectations and we can’t wait to take this music out on the road and share it with all of our friends and fans. Buckle your seat belts, we’re all in for one hell of a ride!”

“Revolution Rise” track listing:

01. No Way Out
02. Crown Of Thorns
03. Leave It All Behind
04. Why
05. Wake Up The Dead
06. Long Way From Home
07. Where Angels Dare To Roam
08. Stained Glass Sadness
09. Endless Static
10. Stealing Days
11. Life Goes On

The song “Crown Of Thorns” can now be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

KILL DEVIL HILL will celebrate the new album release with an October 29 party and performance at The Roxy on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California. A fall tour will follow.

Speaking to Skinny Music earlier this year, Brown stated about KILL DEVIL HILL‘s new material: “It’s pure, unadulterated, hard, kicking-ass rock and roll, man. That’s all I an say about it. It’s gonna be amazing. The tapes I have, there’s no compression, no EQ off the board. It’s just non-stop rock and roll, man. That’s all there is to it.”

KILL DEVIL HILL‘s self-titled debut album was released last year via Steamhammer/SPV. The CD landed at position No. 9 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

“Kill Devil Hill” was produced by Warren Riker, who is best known for his work with DOWN, CORROSION OF CONFORMITY, SUBLIME and CATHEDRAL. The effort was made available in a standard CD edition, as an iTunes digital download, and double gatefold LP.

According to drummer Vinny Appice, KILL DEVIL HILL‘s sound is “like a cross between BLACK SABBATH, ALICE IN CHAINS and a little bit of LED ZEPPELIN thrown in. It’s heavy, but with a lot of cool hooks and melodic overtones, too.”

KILL DEVIL HILL is:

* Jason “Dewey” Bragg (PISSING RAZORS) – Vocals
* Mark Zavon (RATT, W.A.S.P., 40 CYCLE HUM) – Guitar
* Rex Brown (DOWN, PANTERA) – Bass
* Vinny Appice (HEAVEN & HELL, BLACK SABBATH, DIO) – Drums

Steel Panther: Sexy beasts

They’re baaaaa-aaaaaack. Steel Panther have announced the title of their next studio album, and you’ll all be shocked that it’s a bit naughty-sounding.

All You Can Eat (we told you) is the follow-up to 2011′s Balls Out and will likely land in early 2014. The album was recorded in Sherman Oaks, California with producer Jay Ruston (Stone Sour, Meat Loaf).

“We feel like Steel Panther is like a buffet,” says frontman Michael Starr. “You know what I mean?! There’s a little bit of everything for everybody. And you can have as much of us as you want.”

“Listen to our record and tell us that our songs aren’t better than most of the bands out there,” adds drummer Stix Zadinia. “How funny is that? At the end of the day, it comes down to the songs. I think our songs — without sounding egotistical — I think our songs are great. When you hear the hooks in our songs, you hear the playing and you hear the vocals, you throw that up against any band in any era, and I think it stands up.”

The first video from the new album, Party Like It’s The End Of The World, will be unveiled later this year.

Head here to read more from the lads.
