Drumtalk, the video podcast by German drummer and videographer Philipp Koch, conducted an interview with legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENT, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DETHKLOK) on June 16, 2013 in Bremen, Germany. You can now watch the chat below.

In a 2010 interview with Invisible Oranges, Hoglan stated about how he first started drumming: “I was a super air-drummer when I was a kid. I’m a big proponent of air-drumming helping you out when you first get out in the kit. For three or four years, I had my pair of sticks, and I would just air-drum to all my favorite records [while] growing up. Then when I got on the kit, I already had sort of an aptitude for it. I could air-drum all the parts, so when I [had] drums in front of me, it was like air-drumming — without the air.”

Asked what the three most influential songs were on his playing, Hoglan said: “Probably side one of ‘2112’ from RUSH. That was my first moment of ‘Wow.’ I had already air-drummed to a lot of KISS songs. Then when I heard ‘2112’ from RUSH, I remember learning all of that — on the air drums, of course. And then after I got on my kit, when I started playing, the song ‘Brother To Brother’ by Gino Vannelli was a big lightbulb moment. That has some really killer drumming on it. And another song called ‘Presto Vivace’ by UK on their live album ‘Night After Night’. That had Terry Bozzio on drums. I remember figuring that out when I was a kid. That’s got some stuff to it. It’s not like it’s ‘The Black Page’ [a notoriously difficult song] by Frank Zappa, but for a 13-year-old kid trying to figure out some drums, I was really psyched when I learned how to play big chunks of that song.”

Regarding whether it was a conscious decision to not be a very demonstrative drummer in terms of gestures, Hoglan said: “I used to be [demonstrative] when I was younger. I like headbanging while I play. [But] a lot of times the patterns that we play these days don’t allow for a lot of demonstrativeness. In order to play a full set and pound as hard as I do — I don’t know if it looks like I’m hitting hard or not, but I’m one of the louder hitters out there. So I figure if I’m being demonstrative while doing it, that takes away from the power of what I’m doing. [But] I [do] try to be demonstrative. I’ve got a lot of stick flips and stick twirls and goofy things like that in the middle of thrash metal mayhem. All those ’80s rockers used to do stick flips while doing [simple patterns]. And that’s so lame. So, hell, put a stick flip or a stick twirl in the middle of a blastbeat — that’s fun.”

Aniruddh “Andrew” Bansal of Metal Assault recently conducted an interview with legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENT, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DETHKLOK). A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Metal Assault: Coming to your “Gene Hoglan Experience” stuff that you’ve been doing, I think you’ve done one show so far in Calgary. What was that like and people who’re going to see the shows in the coming few days, what can they expect from this event?

Hoglan: A whole lot of fun! That’s one thing I try to bring — a real sense of fun — and this thing kind of borders on stand-up comedy for me, because everything I do is completely ad-lib. Footage from that Calgary show has made it on the Internet — I don’t know how much, but I’ve only seen the concert portion of it with me actually playing. But everything is a completely different night. It is an individualistic night, and it’s so interactive that fans are free to ask any kind of questions. I don’t have a time limit on the [question-and-answer] section or anything like that. You can ask me about anything. If you want to keep it about myself or some of the bands I’ve played with or some of the people I’ve worked with, that’s cool. Even if I miss out some people who have their hands up during the session, they can always come up to me with their questions afterwards. So it is a lot of fun, every night is its own experience, and no two nights will be the same on this. At times I’d probably end up telling the same story here and there if somebody asks, but I do have a wealth of information and entertainment inside my head and I just want to get that out. It’s a very light-hearted night, you know. Plus, I play drums! I play to a bunch of different tracks that a lot of people enjoy and I talk in between them. It’s kind of spoken-word/gig, a one-man gig where the tracks are booming and I’m playing along with them. It’s a really special night and I hope everybody that comes out enjoys it and I guarantee you will. There’s not going to be a frown on any face at the end of the night. I’ve done lots of these shows, but it’s only now that we’re calling it “The Gene Hoglan Experience”. Nobody has been disappointed and everybody has been leaving with big ol’ smiles on their faces, and that’s really cool to me.

Metal Assault: Right, so there’s no planned set list or schedule for these shows, then? It’s just all free form and wherever it takes you.

Hoglan: Absolutely. I do have a pre-planned idea for a night, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to be married to it. If somebody shouts out, “Hey, man! Can you play this song?” If I’ve got the backing track, hell yeah! I’ve done that sometimes. I’ve got a lot of tracks, but at times I don’t have what they ask for. So then somebody else yells out, “I’ve got a copy of it in my car!” I’m like, “Well hey, bring up the CD and I’ll try playing along to it!” Off the top of my head, that’s the way the whole night goes. It’s very interactive, so that’s one thing that I really appreciate about it. You don’t get shout-out request nights when your favorite bands are playing and you don’t get to ask questions as they are on stage. So this is something that’s very different and I’m trying to make it open and accessible to everyone. This is not just about drums. It’s inclusive for everybody. It’s not just a night of drum talk or isn’t a drum clinic. This is me getting on stage and playing some songs. Am I going to talk about the drum parts in those songs? Well, if the fans are interested in that, then cool. When I’ve done these kinds of things in the past, I’ve asked how many drummers I’ve got in the crowd and it’s usually never more than a third of the audience. So, it is inclusive for metal fans, drum fans, Gene fans and fans of any of my bands. Or, you don’t even have to be a metalhead. If you want to come out and be entertained, this is going to be an entertaining night. So there you go!

Metal Assault: You’re also putting out a new DVD which is a sequel to “The Atomic Clock”. This time what have you done that you didn’t do on the first one?

Hoglan: Well, I managed to get licenses to a lot of songs that I’ve played. We put together a small track listing of me playing along to the actual recorded versions of a lot of people’s favorite tunes. On the next one, I’m getting even more licenses, but on this one I’ve included a bunch of bands that I’ve played for and still playing for. That’s the notable difference. On the first “The Atomic Clock”, I didn’t get any licenses so I merely played to the band MECHANISM, which at the time was my main focus. I even played two instrumental tracks of MECHANISM as opposed to playing the whole song. This time I’m not playing instrumental tracks except for one from one of my more popular bands, but I’ve got all the basic instrumental backing tracks and I’m playing along to those as opposed to having all the vocals, samples and everything else on it. For the most part, that’s a major difference and that’s really exciting, seeing myself play to actual recorded tracks to some of these cool bands. It’s in the stages of editing right now. It’s coming along great; it looks better than the last one and way more pro. It’s an improved version of the last one. I’m still pretty light-hearted in it and I don’t take myself real seriously. It’s got a lot of footage that the last one didn’t have. So I’m sure people checking it out will see that it’s definitely a departure from the first one. That was done on a shoe-string budget, pretty much all by myself, but for this one I’ve got a team of experts helping me with it. So it’s really great and it’s called “The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two”.

The trek kicked off August 9 at Sound Academy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and wrapped up on August 31 at Tempe, Arizona’s Marquee Theatre.

In addition to Jordison, SCAR THE MARTYR‘s lineup for the tour featured singer Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), guitarists Jed Simon (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) and Kris Norris (DARKEST HOUR), keyboardist Joey Blush and bassist Kyle Konkiel (IN THIS MOMENT).

“With this project, I focused my efforts on writing for the better of the song,” said Jordison. “I wasn’t worried about flash or persona… It’s all about writing a good solid song. I’m writing music that people can grasp and hold on to…something that resonates. If you don’t have that, then you have nothing.”

“I’d been working on new SLIPKNOT material since the end of the ‘All Hope Is Gone’ tour cycle, but I ended up with so much stuff I had to take a step back and stop working on it,” he explained to Metal Hammer magazine. “The time wasn’t right. But I came up with a bunch of material that was really killer and heavy and started taking some of it in a different direction. I started focusing on a lot of the post-punk and industrial stuff that I’ve always loved and started putting super heavy and brutal guitars over the top of it. That’s how it started. It’s taken me a couple of years to get to this point, but I can honestly say this is the most satisfied I’ve ever been in the studio. I can’t wait for everyone to hear this shit.”

SCAR THE MARTYR will support ALICE IN CHAINS on their U.K. tour in November.

Legendary extreme-metal drummer Gene Hoglan (TESTAMENT, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DARK ANGEL, DETHKLOK) made the first of a series of appearances under the “The Gene Hoglan Experience” banner last night (Saturday, September 21) at the Noctis 666 metal festival and conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Gene told stories and played some of the fans’ favorite songs from the fans’ favorite bands that he has performed with over the years.

Acording to a press release, “The Gene Hoglan Experience” is “an intimate gathering of metal fans brought together to celebrate the legacy and 30-year career of one of metal’s most legendary drummers.”

Hoglan came up with this concept to give the fans what they want: the ultimate “Gene” experience. In addition to telling personal stories, as mentioned above, Hoglan will reveal some of his secret techniques and tips to help all drummers and musicians of all levels.

As previously reported, Gene has set “The Atomic Clock: The Clock Strikes Two” as the title of his upcoming DVD. The disc will feature “a lot of the stuff I have been doing at my clinics,” Gene told MediaMikes.com.

He added: “For this release, I was able to get the licenses for the songs I am playing. Everything from DEATH, TESTAMENT and MELDRUM are going to be on there. The new DVD has a lot of depth to it, and I have tried to improve on everything included.”

The jam-packed DVD is available for pre-sale now, with several awesome package options.

Hoglan takes a moment to explain the portions of the second “The Atomic Clock” DVD that are set in stone: “I’d like to take a moment to tell you guys about something I’m extremely excited about, my upcoming DVD. It is going to be roughly two hours of awesome footage of not only me behind the kit playing, but tons of interviews with some the greats that I’ve had the honor to play with over the last couple of years. Guys from TESTAMENT, DETHKLOK, ANTHRAX, and many others. There will also of course be a load of tips and insights from me to hopefully propel players of all calibers (and instruments, for that matter) up to the next level.

“Now, the most exciting part of the ‘songs that I play’ portion of the program, is that on the new DVD, I will be performing to the actual recorded tracks from some of your favorite bands that I have played for (or am currently playing). That’s pretty darned cool, if ya ask me!

“We at Hoglan Industries are eagerly looking forward to its release before the end of the year, and I will keep everybody regularly updated to its progress in the ensuing weeks.”

Hoglan is heralded and is inspirational to many, even outside of his drumming and now celebrates a 30-year career in music as metal’s in-demand legendary drummer. Gene is the only metal drummer to accomplish two No. 1 records on the rock charts in 2012 with TESTAMENT‘s “Dark Roots Of Earth” and DETHKLOK‘s “Dethalbum III”.

Through a major lifestyle change, Hoglan has beat diabetes and lost over 160 lbs.

Not listening: Hevy Devy

Devin Townsend says he can’t listen to new Black Sabbath album 13 because Bill Ward isn’t present on the recordings.

Ozzy and co recruited Rage Against The Machine drummer Brad Wilk after failing to reach an agreement for original sticksman Ward to appear.

And although the record has gone to number one across the world, it’s not top of Townsend’s listening list.

He tells DeadRhetoric: “It has nothing to do with the drums being not Black Sabbath, or poor performance or poorly recorded or anything.

“It’s just that I can’t shake it’s not Bill Ward. It’s not Black Sabbath to me. I know that’s a naive way of looking at it, but I feel the same way about anything I do.”

There’s a connection with how he feels about his former band Strapping Young Lad – he says he can’t think about it properly because people have never let him work out how he feels about it.

“Unless it’s completely me, I don’t want to be that guy – I don’t want to be that guy that goes up and plays Strapping Young Lad songs,” he says. “I wrote most of the stuff, but I didn’t feel comfortable.

“Until I come to terms with it and until people stop bugging me, I’m not going to have any perspective on the band other than frustration, other than odd memories.

“The more that people demand I do something, the less I want to do what they demand me to do. So the more people go on with these self-serving demands about Strapping Young Lad, I’m like, ‘Look, no! Not now, more than ever before, because I keep being bugged about it.’”

David E. Gehlke of DeadRhetoric.com recently conducted an interview with Canadian multi-instrumentalist/producer Devin Townsend. A few excerpts from the chat follow below.

DeadRhetoric.com: I saw a quote from you in regard to “The Retinal Circus”: “It’s a clusterfuck on stage.” Can you elaborate?

Townsend: I probably just like swearing — it makes me feel good. [laughs] In my head, everything I do that has a concept, which is 80%, appears a lot more streamlined in my mind’s eye than when we try to articulate it on stage when we have no money and no time. So, “The Retinal Circus” is yet another example of me being overambitious and underfunded, as someone close to me commented on the state of my career. Once you’ve spent some time with the show — if you choose to do so, or you turn it off, it makes a great deal of sense. Ultimately, by the end of the end of the show, it has a point that it makes, that the clusterfuck nature is essential. It has to be there. But really at first look, I had a bunch of friends – I spent a lot of time on the video and the audio — I brought the DVD on the tour bus I was on at the time and I played for a band we were out with at the time and a bunch of guys that were involved with it, I put it on and cranked it up, and looked around the front lounge and everybody’s face was like, “What the fuck is this?” I remember thinking at that point, “If you’re not deeply invested in the creative elements of it and why it is the way it is, I can totally see why people would view it as chaos.” When I had described it as being a clusterfuck on stage, it was more of me buffering people that until you do choose get that deep into it, it’s pretty over the top.

DeadRhetoric.com: Jed [Simon] joined you for “Love” and “Detox”. As you said, there’s always the cloud of STRAPPING YOUNG LAD hanging over you, but you confronted it by having Jed onstage with you. How cool was that?

Townsend: First off, thank you for recognizing that, because that’s exactly what it is. Ultimately, I’m going to do what I want to do, and that’s the bottom line. The more that people demand I do something, the less I want to do what they demand me to do. When I was a kid or first in a relationship with my wife, she would comment, “Whatever it is I want you to do, I make sure I don’t tell you to do it.” I’m aware of it, which is a good first step. It’s the truth — I hate being told what to do and I won’t be told what to do. So the more people go on with these self-serving demands about STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, I’m like, “Look, NO!” Not now, more than ever before, because I keep being bugged about it. For me, having Jed there and playing STRAPPING was important because I didn’t have the opportunity to really — other than being “Fuck you, quit talking to me about STRAPPING” — I’ve not had the ability as a musician or as a person to reflect on, “How do you feel about STRAPPING?” Regardless of what anybody feels or their misinterpretation of it, how do you feel about it? And how do I feel about it? I’m totally proud of it; it’s a huge part of my life. It’s something I have an immense emotional connection to, and respect for, but in the same way that what I’m doing right now, which is “Ziltoid” or “Casualties”, STRAPPING is what I was doing then. I find that I can totally sympathize why people would want it back, but my frustrations lay with any band, GUNS N’ ROSES, GODFLESH with “Streetcleaner”, anything, I don’t understand the process people go through in terms of assuming that if the band was still active right now, they’d be like the period that was of emotional significance to them. I don’t understand and I’ll say that straight-up. But the more I look into it, I realize that it’s everywhere. I read something about Ihsahn and about EMPEROR getting back together, and in the interview, he gave a very explicit and perfectly logical explanation as to why EMPEROR wouldn’t be the same now as it was then. I thought, “Okay, that makes perfect sense.” But the comments are unequivocally, “No, I don’t agree — you’re wrong. EMPEROR would be perfect if they came out again.” My reaction is just confusion. That being said, because it’s a reality and you can’t escape it, I have no problem explaining myself.

DeadRhetoric.com: To back that up, you played a STRAPPING song in Chile and posted a message on Twitter after the show essentially apologizing for it. What happened there?

Townsend: The crowd loved it, but for me, I don’t know how I feel about it. And STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, as much as I wrote 80% of the music, it wasn’t just me. It was Gene [Hoglan], Jed, and Byron [Stroud]. For example, I bought the new BLACK SABBATH record and I can’t listen to it because the drums are distracting.

DeadRhetoric.com: Because it’s not Bill Ward playing.

Townsend: It’s not Bill Ward. It has nothing to do with the drums being not-BLACK SABBATH or poor performance or poorly recorded, or anything — it’s just that I can’t shake it’s not Bill Ward, so it’s not BLACK SABBATH to me. I know that it’s a naïve way of looking at it, but I feel the same way about anything I do. Unless it’s completely me, I don’t want to be that guy, I don’t want to be that guy that goes up and plays STRAPPING YOUNG LAD songs. I wrote most of the stuff, but I didn’t feel comfortable. In fact, I felt that until I worked on my relationship with those guys — and not that my relationship is bad, it’s healthy — but until I come to terms with it and until people stop bugging me, I’m not going to have any perspective on the band other than frustration, other than odd memories. I just felt that it’s not what I wanted to be doing right now.

The official video for the song “Blood Host” from SCAR THE MARTYR, the new band led by SLIPKNOT drummer Joey Jordison, can be seen below. The track comes off SCAR THE MARTYR‘s self-titled debut album, which will be released on October 1 via Roadrunner Records.

Recorded at Sound Farm Studios in Des Moines, Iowa, SCAR THE MARTYR‘s CD was helmed by Rhys Fulber, whose production and mixing credits include FEAR FACTORY, ROB ZOMBIE, MINDLESS SELF INDULGENCE, FRONT LINE ASSEMBLY and more. The album was written by Joey and lead vocalist Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), and joining them in the studio were keyboardist Chris Vrenna (NINE INCH NAILS), as well as Simon and Norris, who collectively handled all lead guitars on the album.

SCAR THE MARTYR was recently on the road as the support act for DANZIG on a North American tour which also included performances by former MISFITS guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein and HUNTRESS. The trek kicked off August 9 at Sound Academy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and wrapped up on August 31 at Tempe, Arizona’s Marquee Theatre.

In addition to Jordison, SCAR THE MARTYR‘s lineup for the tour featured singer Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), guitarists Jed Simon (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) and Kris Norris (DARKEST HOUR), keyboardist Joey Blush and bassist Kyle Konkiel (IN THIS MOMENT).

“With this project, I focused my efforts on writing for the better of the song,” said Jordison. “I wasn’t worried about flash or persona… It’s all about writing a good solid song. I’m writing music that people can grasp and hold on to…something that resonates. If you don’t have that, then you have nothing.”

“I’d been working on new SLIPKNOT material since the end of the ‘All Hope Is Gone’ tour cycle, but I ended up with so much stuff I had to take a step back and stop working on it,” he explained to Metal Hammer magazine. “The time wasn’t right. But I came up with a bunch of material that was really killer and heavy and started taking some of it in a different direction. I started focusing on a lot of the post-punk and industrial stuff that I’ve always loved and started putting super heavy and brutal guitars over the top of it. That’s how it started. It’s taken me a couple of years to get to this point, but I can honestly say this is the most satisfied I’ve ever been in the studio. I can’t wait for everyone to hear this shit.”

SCAR THE MARTYR will support ALICE IN CHAINS on their U.K. tour in November.
