Relapse Records has announced the signing of New York City avant-garde, technical death metal quartet PYRRHON (pronounced “peer-on”). The band’s sophomore album, “The Mother Of Virtues’, will be released in early 2014.

Formed in 2008, PYRRHON released one EP (“Fever Kingdoms”, 2010) and one LP (“An Excellent Servant But a Terrible Master”, 2011) via The Path Less Traveled Records and Selfmadegod Records, respectively.

A nightmarish blend of clanging death metal with surreal psychedelic elements, jazz rhythms, and delirious storytelling, “The Mother Of Virtues” was tracked and mixed by Ryan Jones (TODAY IS THE DAY, MUTILATION RITES, WETNURSE) at Saint Vitus Bar and The Sound City in Brooklyn in May and June 2013. The record was then mastered by Colin Marston (KRALLICE, GORGUTS) at The Thousand Caves Studios in Brooklyn in August 2013.

Vocalist Doug Moore commented on the signing: “When I was 15, I bought a copy of Relapse‘s ‘Contaminated 5.0’ sampler CD. Through it, I encountered SUFFOCATION, NEUROSIS, PIG DESTROYER, HUMAN REMAINS, and countless other great bands for the first time.

“We are thrilled and honored to work with a label whose output has done so much to drive metal forward, and which has meant so much to all four of us over the years.”

PYRRHON quickly became known for its mind-bending live show, playing with such notable acts as MISERY INDEX, HATE ETERNAL, ORIGIN, TOMBS, LITURGY, CANNABIS CORPSE, BEHOLD THE ARCTOPUS and INTER ARMA.

ALTERBEAST is a technical death metal band hailing from Sacramento, California, formed in 2011 under the name GARY BUSEY AMBER ALERT (GBAA). ALTERBEAST quickly began writing songs, combining influences from favorites such as THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, NECROPHAGIST and SPAWN OF POSSESSION, along with numerous other classic death metal acts like DISSECTION and MORBID ANGEL. 2013 has been a pretty amazing year for progressive metal of all sorts. Last Chance To Reason put out the great almost aquatic sounding album Level 3, The Ocean dropped the entirely aquatic Pelagial, and Gorguts returned to show all you young'ins how an OG technical death metal band does the genre right with Colored Sands. Relapse Records has announced the signing of tech-savvy grind specialists MARUTA.

Founded in the swamplands of South Florida in 2005, MARUTA has been blurring the lines between grindcore and technical death metal ever since. The band has released two full-lengths through Willowtip Records, 2008’s “In Narcosis” and 2011’s “Forward Into Regression”, to very positive reviews. Their forthcoming full-length and Relapse Records debut promises to follow their upward trajectory of extreme music innovation.

MARUTA will begin recording its new CD early next year with Scott Hull of PIG DESTROYER and AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED at Visceral Sound Studios in Bethesda, Maryland. This collaboration marks the first time that Hull has agreed to record a band that is not his own, and certainly lays the groundwork for an ear-shattering Relapse debut.

Vocalist Mitchell Luna commented on the signing: “Relapse is a label with a very diverse roster, and one that has put out several records in the past that we consider highly influential. A partnership with them just felt like the next logical choice, and we feel like we fit right in.”

MARUTA‘s previous two albums plus songs from Relapse‘s “This Comp Kills Fascists” collection are available for streaming via their official Bandcamp page. They have toured the U.S. and Europe multiple times.
