German metal act Atrocity posted a Q&A with drummer Joris Nijenhuis, where he discussed the new album “Okkult.” The album trilogy begins with part one on December 21, 2012, which is also the start of the global treasure hunt when one track from each of the three releases will be hidden within three continents starting with Europe in 2013.

The Q&A with Nijenhuis reads as follows:

Q: “How was it to record the new songs of ATROCITY?

“It’s very cool that I could finally play on a new Atrocity album. I joined the band in December 2011 and the drum recording sessions took place in the summer time for the new ‘Okkult’ album, so that’s pretty quick. I’m especially looking forward to play these songs live, so i can perform the songs on stage which I play on the ‘Okkult’ album myself.”

Q: “How was your stay at Mastersound Studio, how did you like the the studio and to work with the Alex and the guys over there?

“The Mastersound studio is a very nice place to stay. The location is amazing and if you want to eat schnitzels, the XXL schnitzel place is pretty close to the studio. We usually start every morning with coffee and pretzels. After that I start warming up and then we start recording, sometimes till late in the evening.

“Working with Alex, Sander and Tosso is always very relaxed. I’m usually my own worst enemy with recording, I’m almost never satisfied with a take, there are always a few small things I’m not happy about. So sometimes it’s hard but I’m quite happy with the final results.”

Q: “What can the fans expect from the new material?

“The new material is more brutal and darker then the last few Atrocity albums. I would compare it to the old Atrocity classics of the 90’s or ‘Atlantis’ but then better and more diverse. You can expect brutal drums and vocals, great riffs, very cool guitar soli and big bombastic orchestral parts with Horror-like atmosphere.”

Q: “What are your favorite songs?

” ‘Masaya (Boca Del Infierno)’ is one the most brutal songs on the album. It’s a death metal song with lots of Double bass, bombblasting, fast fills, and in the middle a really cool groovy part.

“‘Pandemonium’ is Atrocity’s new masterpiece, a very epic song with some really brutal blastbeats and huge sounding orchestra parts. This is probably gonna be a new favorite Atrocity song for a lot of people, especially for fans of ‘Reich of Phenomena’ and ‘Apocalypse’!!

“My 3rd favorite song is ‘Murder Blood Assassination.’ Also a very diverse song which is really cool to play. Drummingwise this song has got everything you need in a metal song, double bass, blastbeats and really cool fills. I’m looking forward to play this one live.”

Further details on the global “treasure hunt” surrounding Atrocity’s upcoming “Okkult” album trilogy was issued by vocalist Alex Krull in an official statement. The treasure hunt begins when one track from each of the three releases will be hidden within three continents, starting with Europe in 2013 with the release of the first “Okkult” LP. In the statement, Krull also announced that the band wished to release the first in the series on December 21, 2012, the end of the Mayan calendar and alleged date of the apocalypse, however the date wasn’t possible. Instead the band plans to release an advance of the album on that date as the soundtrack for the apocalypse.

The entire statement reads as follows:

“Here is a brand new statement by Alex Krull for the upcoming ATROCITY album trilogy ‘OKKULT’! The German death metal pioneers remember not only their musical roots, but also present a specific approach to the dismal album trilogy:

“With ‘OKKULT’ we want to start a very special album trilogy. We have begun to work on the ‘OKKULT’ trilogy a long time ago. Most recently with the ‘Die Gottlosen Jahre (The Godless Years)’ DVD, a splendid film documentary was released commemorating our longer than 25 year career, which even now is to run at film festivals. Reason enough now to usher in a new era of ATROCITY! Musically, no prisoners will be taken, the ‘OKKULT’ series is also brutal, bombastic and dark. These will not only be the heaviest and most brutal albums of ATROCITY since years, but also the darkest works of our band’s history. Lovers of our harder material like ‘Hallucinations’, ‘Todessehnsucht’, ‘Blut’ or ‘Atlantis’ will surely be delighted with the ‘OKKULT’ series at their expense, although the ‘OKKULT’ songs have their own trademarks, of course.

“The orchestral parts will be recorded in September by the Lingua Mortis Orchestra under the direction of Victor Smolski (Rage) in Minsk / Belarus.

“In keeping with the dark atmosphere of ‘OKKULT’ we got the Canadian Sound Designer Katie Halliday on board. She worked for movies like ‘Saw V’, ‘Saw VI’, ‘Saw 3D (VII)’, ‘The Devil’s Carnival’ and ‘Todd and the Book of Pure Evil’, and already could reap some awards for her work.

“The lyrical concept is anything but one-dimensional. For ‘OKKULT’, we have no desire to go only in a certain direction. So the whole thing will be broadly based: From occult magic, occult places to conspiracy theories and mysteries that are still unsolved.

“For our fans, we’ve come up with something very special: There will be no conventional bonus tracks on the ‘OKKULT’ albums! In return, all fans can actively engage in a kind of treasure hunt. For the respective ‘OKKULT albums, we will hide one song on an ‘occult site’, which is the ‘missing track’ to each album. For the first ‘OKKULT’ record that certain place will be in Europe. For the following albums the places will be on other continents, perhaps in America and Asia. l will be the only one that knows these locations. All original recording tracks and mixes of these songs will be destroyed by our own hands, that also means we as a band will also not be able to listen to these songs until they are found. They are in the truest sense of the word: Unique. If someone finds these songs, and wants to keep them for himself, then we will have have no way to listen to these songs ever again in their original form. Internally we have already had some serious discussions on what song is supposed to be hidden for the first ‘OKKULT’ (laughs). We will ennoble this ‘treasure’, to something like ‘The Golden iPod’, we will spare no expense or effort. More info on how it will look exactly and how you can participate in the treasure hunt, will be announced a later date.

“In times when more and more music seems to lose it’s value, we want to make a statement. These hidden songs will definitely have an great added value, especially when they will dig them out in 200 years (laughs). That will probably not be the case.

“On 21/12/2012 we will release something exclusive in advance, we want to provide the right soundtrack for the apocalypse, and actually that was our preferred date for the first release of the ‘OKKULT’ series. Unfortunately, this release date is not possible, therefore the first ‘OKKULT’ album will be released in spring 2013, in case the world downfall didn’t happen.

Be prepared!”

In what appears to be the real life version of the “golden ticket” from Willie Wonka fame, German gothic death band Atrocity has told Metal Hammer Germany that the plan for the upcoming “Okkult” trilogy is to take one track off of each of the three upcoming releases, destroy all master tapes, and hide the tracks over three continents – Europe, America and Asia – in a “song treasure hunt,” starting with the first release in 2013. The “missing tracks” will neither be maintained by the band nor the record label and will never be played again until they are found. Fans are encouraged to find the tracks.

As for “Okkult,” Atrocity’s plan is to take the sound back to the band’s roots with orchestra parts performed by the Lingua Mortis Orchestra under the direction of Victor Smolski (Rage) and recorded in Minsk.

Atrocity frontman Alex Krull was quoted in the article (translation by Google) as saying:

“With ‘Okkult’ we want to start a very special album trilogy. We have begun to work a long time ago about it. Most recently with the “Die Gottlosen Jahre” DVD, a complex film strip appeared on our more than 25 year career, which even now is to run at film festivals. Reason enough now usher in a new era of Atrocity! Musically, no prisoners will be taken, the “Okkult” series is also violent, bombastic and bleak. This is not only the toughest and most brutal albums ATROCITY be for years, but also the darkest works of our band’s history. Lovers of our hard stuff like “Hallucinations”, “Death Wish”, “Blood” or “Atlantis” are in the “Okkult” series fully come into their own, although the “OCCULT” course material has its own unique touch.”

Founding Neurosis guitarist/vocalist Scott Kelly is preparing to release his new solo album in North America via Neurot Records on August 14th.

The past two years have seen Scott Kelly touring across three continents, besides recording for and releasing a split 7? with Wino and the most recent Songs of Townes Van Zandt tribute album with Wino and fellow Neurosis mate Steve Von Till. The following press release was issued about the album:

“The new full-length sees Kellyonce again digging deep into very personal territories as on his previous solo works including his lauded Spirit Bound Flesh and The Wake, yet forges a brand new path as fellow musicians Noah Landis (Neurosis) and Greg Dale join this new venture as Scott Kelly And The Road Home. Jason Roeder (Neurosis, Sleep) and Josh Graham (A Storm Of Light) make guest appearances on the album’s seventh track ‘The Field That Surrounds Me’ and the cover art for the album was completed by Thomas Hooper.

“The eight tracks found on the new opus, entitled The Forgiven Ghost In Me, was recorded by Landis, and runs deep with over forty minutes of foreboding Americana over eight new anthems, showcasing the ever-evolving artist brandishing some of his most expressive hymns of pain, reflection and redemption to date.”

Stated Scott Kelly on the album: “This record continues my passion for acoustic experimentation, this time with a more fleshed out sound and a more diverse use of musicians and instrumentation. But in the end, as I have stated before, this is all about the songs in their rawest form. The stories that they reveal and the emotions that run rampant through my heart.”

The track listing is as follows:

1. A Spirit Redeemed To The Sun
2. The Forgiven Ghost In Me
3. In The Waking Hours
4. Within It Blood
5. We Let The Hell Come
6. The Sun Is Dreaming In The Soul
7. The Field That Surrounds Me
8. We Burn Through The Night
