Session conducted an interview with former NEVERMORE and current CONQUERING DYSTOPIA guitarist Jeff Loomis at this year’s Musikmesse fair, which was held March 12-15 in Frankfurt, Germany. You can now watch the chat below.

Loomis redesigned his main Schecter signature signature-series JL-7 black seven-string electric guitar for 2014. It includes increased access and playability, lighter weight, thinner neck, Hipshot hardtail and new tones from the EMG 57/66 set.

CONQUERING DYSTOPIA is the project featuring Jeff Loomis and Portland, Oregon studio musician Keith Merrow. The group’s self-titled debut album was mixed at Audiohammer Studios in Sanford, Florida with Mark Lewis (ARSIS, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER, WHITECHAPEL, DEVILDRIVER, DEICIDE, SIX FEET UNDER).

The recording lineup for “Conquering Dystopia” is completed by Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE) on bass and Alex Rudinger (THE FACELESS) on drums.

Loomis previously contributed a guest guitar solo to Keith‘s second full-length instrumental album, “Awaken The Stone King”, which came out in January 2011.

The special tour edition of Loomis‘ latest album, “Plains Of Oblivion”, was released on April 16, 2013 via Century Media Records.

“Plains Of Oblivion – Tour Edition” features three bonus tracks, in addition to the original “Plains Of Oblivion” disc that was released in 2012.

Loomis‘s second solo album, “Plains Of Oblivion”, sold 2,900 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 179 on The Billboard 200 chart. The effort landed at No. 2 on the Top New Artist Albums (Heatseekers) chart, which lists the best-selling albums by new and developing artists, defined as those who have never appeared in the Top 100 of The Billboard 200.

“Plains Of Oblivion” was released on April 10, 2012 in North America (one day earlier in Europe) via Century Media Records. The CD was produced by Aaron Smith (7 HORNS 7 EYES) and features cover artwork by Colin Marks of Rain Song Design, who has previously worked with ALL SHALL PERISH, THE END and XERATH.

Loomis and drummer Van Williams announced their departure from NEVERMORE in April 2011 due to personal differences with singer Warrel Dane and bassist Jim Sheppard. Their replacements have not yet been announced.

KILLER BE KILLED, the new band comprised of Max Cavalera (SOULFLY, ex-SEPULTURA), Greg Puciato (THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN), Troy Sanders (MASTODON) and Dave Elitch (ex-THE MARS VOLTA), will release its self-titled debut album on May 13 (one day earlier internationally) via Nuclear Blast Entertainment. The CD was produced and mixed by Josh Wilbur, whose credits include work with GOJIRA, LAMB OF GOD, HATEBREED, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ESCAPE THE FATE, P!NK and STEVE EARLE. Cover art and packaging was executed by Ryan Clark of Invisible Creature Design, the Grammy-nominated design firm whose clients include ALICE IN CHAINS, FOO FIGHTERS, CHRIS CORNELL, DEVILDRIVER, MONSTER MAGNET, WOLFMOTHER and DEMON HUNTER.

“He’s a Polish worker in the back of a dark truck, but he looked like a criminal to me,” explains Clark about his choice for the cover’s image. “Multiplying his face seemed to give him a sort of split personality/schizophrenic vibe, which feels like a good mesh. Not just for the band name but the idea of a (for the lack of a better term) supergroup.”

“Killer Be Killed” track listing:

01. Wings Of Feather And Wax
02. Face Down
03. Melting Of My Marrow
04. Snakes of Jehova
05. Curb Crusher
06. Save The Robots
07. Fire To Your Flag
08. I.E.D.
09. Dust Into Darkness
10. Twelve Labors
11. Forbidden Fire
12. Ghosts Of Chernobyl (vinyl-only bonus track)

The songs “Wings Of Feather And Wax” and “Face Down” can be streamed in the YouTube clip below.

MetalSucks placed Puciato at #1 on their list of the Top 25 Modern Metal Frontmen, but he also expresses himself through the dark electro-pop of THE BLACK QUEEN, together with NINE INCH NAILS touring guitarist Josh Eustis of TELEFON TEL AVIV and Maynard James Keenan‘s PUSCIFER. Puciato made a guest appearance in 2012 with MIXHELL, the DJ project of Max‘s brother, SEPULTURA co-founder Igor Cavalera.

Cavalera is no stranger to collaborations, of course, having invited multiple guests onto SEPULTURA‘s genre-defining “Roots” and SOULFLY‘s gold-selling debut album in 1998. One such SOULFLY guest, Chino Moreno, has often joined Puciato onstage with both THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN and DEFTONES. Max was one-half of the incendiary NAILBOMB, together with English record producer and FUDGE TUNNEL mastermind Alex Newport. The pair released one studio album in 1993 and performed a blistering set at the Dynamo festival in 1995.

“We did the song on SOULFLY‘s ‘Omen’ and then we started talking about doing an entire album together, the way he had with Alex Newport,” Puciato explains. “We eventually got together with some riffs we both had and wrote a bunch more material in a 72-hour blast out in the desert. We left with about 15 demos we made using the same drum machine and four track Max used working on ‘Chaos A.D.’

Cognizant of the reputation both of them have cultivated after working with some of the world’s best drummers, Puciato called upon David Elitch, who had toured internationally with the mind-bendingly psychedelic group THE MARS VOLTA. His expertise in everything from jazz to metal has led to live and studio collaborations with a diverse range of major artists including Justin Timberlake, French electronic wizards M83 and Norwegian singer-songwriter Susanne Sundfør.

KILLER BE KILLED has come together even as their main projects hit a collective stride: Max just released his ninth studio album with SOULFLY, “Savages”, to many of the strongest reviews of his legendary career. THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN‘s “One Of Us Is The Killer” debuted at #1 on Billboard‘s Hard Rock Album chart earlier this year. MASTODON‘s most recent album, “The Hunter”, was Album Of The Year in Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Rock Sound, Classic Rock, Terrorizer and Total Guitar in 2011.

MASTODON and THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN have toured together many times. During one such tour in the U.S., in late 2011, Puciato was telling Sanders about the new project. Before too long, Sanders and Cavalera were meeting at a festival in South America for the first time: “Hey, I’m Troy. And I think we’re in a band together.”

The electric chemistry was apparent the first time they all assembled. “Having met, created and recorded an album together, this experience has easily exceeded my initial expectations,” says Sanders. “The collective energy and mutual respect for one another eased the entire process and has been very therapeutic for me.”

Former BADLANDS bassist Greg Chaisson filled in for Ronnie Mancuso at RED DRAGON CARTEL‘s March 4 concert in Tempe, Arizona. Fan-filmed video footage of the performance can be seen below.

Chaisson and RED DRAGON CARTEL leader Jake E. Lee (also formerly of OZZY OSBOURNE) were half of the short-lived BADLANDS, which also featured current KISS drummer Eric Singer and the late singer Ray Gillen (who also had a brief stint in BLACK SABBATH). After the first BADLANDS album, Singer was replaced by Jeff Martin. The group lasted from 1988 to 1993 and released two albums, “Badlands” (1989) and “Voodoo Highway” (1991) before Gillen left and was replaced by John West. Ray‘s death in 1993 effectively ended any hopes of a BADLANDS reunion. The album “Dusk”, consisting of BADLANDS demo recordings from 1992-1993, was released in 1998.

RED DRAGON CARTEL‘s self-titled debut album sold around 5,000 copies in the United States in its first week of release to debut at position No. 69 on The Billboard 200 chart. Released on January 28 via Frontiers Records, the CD was recorded at Las Vegas’ The Hideout Recording Studio — owned and operated by Kevin Churko (OZZY OSBOURNE, FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH, IN THIS MOMENT) — and was produced by R. Bernard Mann (a.k.a. Ronnie Mancuso) and Jake E. Lee, and executive-produced, mixed and mastered by Churko.

RED DRAGON CARTEL, which references the axeman’s Japanese roots, also features Darren James “D.J.” Smith of Canadian metallers WARMACHINE, on vocals, Ronnie Mancuso (BEGGARS & THIEVES) on bass and Jonas Fairley (BLACK BETTY) on drums.

JAKE E. LEE’S RED DRAGON CARTEL‘s setlist includes new material like the singles “Feeder” and “Deceived”, as well as major hits from Jake E. Lee‘s glorious past: “Bark At The Moon”, “The Ultimate Sin” and “Rock ‘N’ Roll Rebel” (all originally recorded by OZZY OSBOURNE), as well as “Shine On” and “High Wire” (BADLANDS).

KXM, the new project featuring drummer Ray Luzier (KORN), bassist/vocalist Doug Pinnick (KING’S X) and guitarist George Lynch (LYNCH MOB, DOKKEN), will release its self-titled debut album on March 11 via Rat Pak Records. The CD was produced by KXM and Chris Collier, who is known for his work with LYNCH MOB, Lita Ford and Tommy Bolin, to name a few.

The official video for the song “Rescue Me” can be seen below. Also available is a 14-minute clip containing audio samples of all the songs that are set to appear on “KXM”.

KXM takes its name from the combination of the members’ other projects: K from KORN, X from KING’S X and M from LYNCH MOB.

A pre-order for the KXM album has been launched on the Rat Pak web site. The effort is available in various bundles, includes signed CDs; CDs and t-shirts; and even a phone call from a bandmember.

According to a press release, “the self-titled debut of KXM is something truly unique and special. The songs are powerful, precise, and transcend beyond the boundaries of the imagination.

“In today’s overpopulated music arena, true gems become harder and harder to find, but KXM‘s unified vision rises above the normal and creates its own space.

“From the opening drum riff of ‘Stars’ to final chord on ‘Human Friction’, ‘KXM’ is an album that is sure to resonate with fans from the band’s original projects while garnering new ones as well. Songs like ‘Gun Fight’, ‘Faith Is A Room’ and the first single, ‘Rescue Me’, are sure to be instant favorites among fans. The band shows their softer side on the ballad ‘Never Stop’, along with their dark side on the tale of domestic violence, ‘Sleep’.”

“KXM” track listing:

01. Stars
02. Rescue Me
03. Gun Fight
04. Never Stop
05. Faith Is A Room
06. I’ll Be OK
07. Sleep
08. Love
09. Burn
10. Do It Now
11. Human Friction
12. Tranquilize (bonus track)
13. Rescue Me (radio edit) (bonus track)

In a recent interview with the “Talking Metal” podcast,
Lynch stated about how KXM came together: “When you are in the music scene here, especially in Southern California, you run into everyone, everybody loves everybody, it’s a mutual admiration society. You’re hanging out, you are playing gigs and you run into your buds and your friends, and invariably, with all of us, it’s, like, ‘Let’s form a project, let’s do something together,’ because, ya know, we all want to play together and usually it never goes anywhere, but this time it actually did. It’s really amazing. Things lined up.

Doug has been… The first time I heard KING’S X with ‘Out Of The Silent Planet’ and ‘Gretchen Goes to Nebraska’, oh, to me, he was the benchmark. This is the guy that I was born to play with, ya know? He has got it all. He comes from gospel roots, he’s got the blues thing, he just does it all. I just knew would be a natural fit. Doug is so good he’s a natural fit with anybody. He is a self-contained machine. He’s got that very unique bass attack and sound and obviously his vocal styling. He is a poet. He is a great lyricist. A great frontman, the whole nine yards. And Ray and I have been in other little projects and have done things together. We would always touch base but never really got serious.

“I don’t remember exactly how this all fell together.

“We all have limited time being that were all in other projects but we said, ‘Let’s really, really do this and quit talking about it.'”

PALMS, the Los Angeles-based band featuring three former members of ISIS with DEFTONES‘ frontman Chino Moreno, premiered the outfit’s first music video, for the song “Future Warrior”. Check it out below. The five-minute clip, directed by Jon Mancinetti, perfectly encapsulates the visual elements that have accompanied the PALMS debut album’s release: a breezy Southern California landscape with rugged mountains and swaying palm trees.

PALMS released its self-titled debut album in June, with Spin describing “Palms” as “the slow-orbiting-rocket float of ‘Oceanic’-era ISIS painted in soft colors, now with the gushing, soaring melodies that would work on an older sibling’s mixtape next to CURE, ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN, US, or DEPECHE MODE” and Revolver proclaiming the album a “dreamy, swooning… masterpiece.”

The quartet played its first live shows in July, with four headlining dates on the West Coast followed by a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, as SYSTEM OF A DOWN‘s hand-picked openers.

PALMS came together following the demise of ISIS, with Jeff Caxide (bass), Aaron Harris, (drums) and Clifford Meyer (keyboards/guitar) electing to continue playing music together. “After a little time Jeff, Cliff, and I decided that it was insane that we all still lived here in Los Angeles and weren’t playing together,” Harris says. “It just sort of happened naturally, probably because we have been playing together for so long, and things started to come together. But we didn’t want to be instrumental: We wanted vocals. We just weren’t exactly sure who that would be at first.” The band, knowing that Moreno had been a fan of ISIS, thought he would be a great fit and he agreed. “A chance to work with the guys from ISIS sounded like a lot of fun,” Moreno says, “I’ve always been into the atmospheric sounds they had created with that project and felt my sense of melody would meld well with theirs.”

08. Anatomy Of Erinyes
09. Prayer For Prey
10. White Nights In A Day Room

SCAR THE MARTYR was recently on the road as the support act for DANZIG on a North American tour which also included performances by former MISFITS guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein and HUNTRESS. The trek kicked off August 9 at Sound Academy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and wrapped up on August 31 at Tempe, Arizona’s Marquee Theatre.

In addition to Jordison, SCAR THE MARTYR‘s lineup for the tour featured singer Henry Derek Bonner (BLOOD PROMISE), guitarists Jed Simon (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD) and Kris Norris (DARKEST HOUR), keyboardist Joey Blush and bassist Kyle Konkiel (IN THIS MOMENT).

“With this project, I focused my efforts on writing for the better of the song,” said Jordison. “I wasn’t worried about flash or persona… It’s all about writing a good solid song. I’m writing music that people can grasp and hold on to…something that resonates. If you don’t have that, then you have nothing.”

“I’d been working on new SLIPKNOT material since the end of the ‘All Hope Is Gone’ tour cycle, but I ended up with so much stuff I had to take a step back and stop working on it,” he explained to Metal Hammer magazine. “The time wasn’t right. But I came up with a bunch of material that was really killer and heavy and started taking some of it in a different direction. I started focusing on a lot of the post-punk and industrial stuff that I’ve always loved and started putting super heavy and brutal guitars over the top of it. That’s how it started. It’s taken me a couple of years to get to this point, but I can honestly say this is the most satisfied I’ve ever been in the studio. I can’t wait for everyone to hear this shit.”

SCAR THE MARTYR will support ALICE IN CHAINS on their U.K. tour in November.

The self-titled debut album from ASHES OF ARES, the band featuring Matt Barlow (ex-ICED EARTH), Van Williams (ex-NEVERMORE) and Freddie Vidales (ex-ICED EARTH), sold around 900 copies in the United States in its first week of release. Issued on September 6 via Nuclear Blast Records, the CD was recorded in part at Morrisound Recording in Tampa, Florida with legendary producer Jim Morris (ICED EARTH, OBITUARY, JON OLIVA’S PAIN, JAG PANZER). It was made available as a limited CD in a digipak, including a bonus track, as well as in two different 2LP versions.

“Ashes Of Ares” track listing:

01. The Messenger
02. Move The Chains
03. On Warrior’s Wings
04. Punishment
05. This Is My Hell
06. Dead Man’s Plight
07. Chalice Of Man
08. The Answer
09. What I Am
10. The One-Eyed King
11. The Answer (acoustic version; bonus track)

The video for the song “This Is My Hell” can be seen below. The clip was directed by David Brodsky (MUNICIPAL WASTE, WHITECHAPEL, KYLESA, REVOCATION) and was shot in an old steel foundry in Newburgh, New York along the Hudson River.

Matt Barlow recently told DeadRhetoric.com about the songwriting process for “Ashes Of Ares”: “It really is for the first time being in total creative control of lyrics and vocal melodies. That’s a big deal for me. It’s a big step, but without Freddie writing the music — he wrote 99.9 however much of the music — it would be different. I’m a music writer, but not writer per se. I did write the basis for “Move The Chains”, but my guitar playing sucks [laughs], but Freddie made it sound like actual guitar playing, and I did “The Answer”, which I wrote acoustically. It’s really more… I’m going to take the hits — good or bad — as far as lyrics and melodies because it is all me. Freddie wrote 99.9 [percent], however much of the music, but it’s really this collaborative effort. Van took the ideas we had and wrote these cool drum parts that we didn’t even think of — it changed the dynamic of the songs. It’s a really cool joint collaboration, and we’re really proud.”

Regarding the album title and the cover artwork, which was designed by drummer Van Williams, Van stated: “We discussed a few ideas, but once we had developed the band logo, it felt right to use it as the introduction to the band along with the name as the focal point for our first album. The artwork, for me, reflects where each of us has been and how we are coming together from our pasts in this new endeavour.”

ASHES OF ARES is:

Matthew Barlow – Vocals
Freddie Vidales – Guitar/Bass
Van Williams – Drums
Gio Geraca – Guitar (session/touring member only)
Dean Sternberg – Bass (session/touring member only)

ASHES OF ARES is a band which represents the culmination of experiences, trials and tribulations of its founding members. Within months of their departures from the iconic metal bands ICED EARTH and NEVERMORE, the trio came together with a renewed drive to create a sound which is a true collaboration of their personal influences, ideas and visions. Armed with the knowledge acquired through years of the writing, touring and recording cycle, and with the support of an army of loyal fans across the globe, ASHES OF ARES is poised to carve out a new legacy and stand alongside those who have helped pave the way.
