Former MEGADETH guitarist Marty Friedman recently spoke to Gear Gods about his first piece of gear. Check out the clip below.

Friedman will release “Inferno”, his first solo album of original material in four years, in late May via Prosthetic Records (except in Japan, where the album will be released by Universal Music). The CD was recorded primarily in Los Angeles with engineer Chris Rakestraw (DANZIG, CHILDREN OF BODOM) and mixed by Jens Bogren (OPETH, AMON AMARTH) — features what Friedman recently told Guitar World is “the most intense writing and playing I can do.” The album also includes notable guest appearances by several artists influenced by Friedman, including flamenco/metal acoustic guitar duo RODRIGO Y GABRIELA, CHILDREN OF BODOM frontman Alexi Laiho, SKYHARBOR mastermind Keshav Dhar and REVOCATION guitar whiz David Davidson, as well as Friedman‘s first songwriting collaboration with Jason Becker since the pair played together in CACOPHONY, the pioneering duo of guitar mayhem.

BACKYARD BABIES and MICHAEL MONROE guitarist Dregen (real name: Andreas Tyrone Svensson) will not be touring with the former HANOI ROCKS singer for the remainder of the year so that Dregen can focus on promoting his debut solo album, available now in Sweden via Universal Music.

Says Dregen: “I was part of making two damn good rock n’ roll records at the same time. Both records are too good not to tour them and neiter Michael Monroe or me will disappoint our fans! The fantastic guitarist Rich Jones will temporarily fill in for me [on the road with Monroe].

“Please try to catch a show with both Dregen and Michael Monroe this autumn! They will both rock. And roll.”

Michael Monroe‘s new album, “Horns And Halos”, was certified gold in Finland for sales in excess of 10,000 copies within the first week of the CD’s release.

Released on August 27 via Spinefarm Records, “Horns And Halos” is the follow-up to the 2011 critically acclaimed “Sensory Overdrive”, winner of Classic Rock magazine’s “Album Of The Year” and a No. 1 record in Monroe‘s Finnish homeland.

The official video for Dregen‘s first solo single, “Just Like That”, can be seen below. The song received its world premiere on August 10 on Swedish national radio P3. It was then released on August 14.

Produced by Dregen and Pär Wiksten (THE WANNADIES), Dregen‘s first solo venture in a 25-year career that has seen him at the core of such internationally acclaimed acts as BACKYARD BABIES and THE HELLACOPTERS features all new material, and is a contemporary and inventive distillation of the Stockholm-based guitarist’s far-reaching record collection.

Recorded for the most part in Pär Wiksten‘s Hospital1 studio in Stockholm, with mixing handled by Michael Ilbert at the legendary Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, these 10 tracks come in a variety of hues and colours, moods and textures, veering from hard-hitting blues (“Flat Tyre On a Muddy Road”), through sinewy, snake-hipped funk (“6-10”) and onto kool, KISS-inspired strut ‘n’ roll (“Mojo’s Gone”).

BACKYARD BABIES announced in November 2009 that they were going on an indefinite hiatus after completing a European tour.

Shawn of Rockstar Radio conducted an interview with Michael Poulsen of Danish/American metal rock ‘n’ rollers VOLBEAT before the band’s September 14 performance at Operation Kick Ass in Chula Vista, California. You can now watch the chat below.

VOLBEAT‘s fifth studio album, “Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies”, was released in North America on April 9 via Vertigo/Republic Records/Universal Music. The CD finds the core trio of Michael Poulsen (vocals/guitar), Anders Kjølholm (bass) and Jon Larsen (drums) joined by former ANTHRAX/THE DAMNED THINGS guitarist Rob Caggiano, who produced the album with longtime VOLBEAT co-producer Jacob Hansen.

“It’s a new vibe for VOLBEAT,” said Poulsen. “You’ve got everything — the rockabilly stuff, the melodies, the ultra-heavy stuff, the Western motifs and the big rock songs. It’s everything that VOLBEAT are all about, but taken even further.”

The “Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies” album title is a phrase that evokes another time, an era when elegant lawbreakers were the rock stars of the day. It tips its fedora to everything from the bad men (and women) of the old west to the old-school metal bands who influenced the young Michael Poulsen to form his first band, DOMINUS, back in the early 90s.

A PERFECT CIRCLE, the multi-platinum rock band helmed by Maynard James Keenan (TOOL, PUSCIFER) and Billy Howerdel (ASHES DIVIDE), will release “Three Sixty”, the outfit’s first greatest-hits collection, on November 19 via Universal Music Enterprises (UMe).

The release also includes A PERFECT CIRCLE‘s first new original, studio recording in a decade with the inclusion of “By And Down”, a song written after the band returned from their self-imposed hiatus for a series of live performances throughout 2010 and 2011.

Billy and I created A PERFECT CIRCLE out of a now long-running friendship, and I think the music we have made reflects that personal connection and has given us the ability to further develop and trust our intuition,” explained Keenan. “I feel ‘Three Sixty’ is an accurate representation of that friendship and those instincts.”

In a brand new intervie with RollingStone.com, Keenan stated about “Three Sixty”: “Of course, record companies always have their little clause in their contract, about their right to release a greatest-hits record. I think that can be kind of weird sometimes, when you see ‘the greatest hits,’ no, no — ‘the greatest greatest hits.’ Releases by a record label that the band had nothing to do with, and there’s several versions of the same thing, over and over again. That’s kind of why we did the DVD and the box set. If you’re going to release a greatest hits, we should also offer something that’s not just the old recordings, rearranged. But on that greatest hits, there’s going to be the studio version of ‘By And Down’, which is the new track that we’ve been working on, that we never quite got around to recording.”

A PERFECT CIRCLE formed in the late ’90s with Keenan and Howerdel making up the core of the band with a number of well-known musicians having recorded and/or toured with the outfit, including James Iha (SMASHING PUMPKINS), Troy Van Leeuwen (QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, FAILURE), Paz Lenchantin (ENTRANCE BAND, ZWAN), Jeordie White (MARILYN MANSON), Josh Freese (THE VANDALS, DEVO) and Tim Alexander (PRIMUS).

A PERFECT CIRCLE also recently announced the release of a limited-edition box set titled “A Perfect Circle Live: Featuring Stone And Echo”. The collection, which focuses on the band’s live outings from 2010-2011 includes a full-length DVD of the outfit’s August 2011 Red Rocks concert (with accompanying audio) as well as a 3-CD collection of live releases, one dedicated to each of the three studio albums from the band’s discography. The self-titled album from KOBRA AND THE LOTUS was released in the U.S. on April 16 via Simmons Records/T-Boy Records/Universal Music Enterprises (UMe).

Formed in 2009 by powerhouse vocalist Brittany “Kobra” Paige, KOBRA AND THE LOTUS has been more than busy touring Canada and Europe extensively with ball-busting hard work and intensity that secured coveted slots at Hellfest, Wacken Open Air, Download and Bloodstock in 2012.

MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson has uploaded behind-the-scenes footage from the band’s September 3 concert at Time Warner Cable Music Pavilion at Walnut Creek in Raleigh, North Carolina as the support act for IRON MAIDEN. Check out the clip below.

MEGADETH‘s latest album, “Super Collider”, has sold 65,000 copies in the United States since its June 4 release. The CD arrived in stores via MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine‘s new label, Tradecraft, distributed by Universal Music Enterprises (UMe). It marks MEGADETH‘s first release since the band’s split with Roadrunner Records.

MEGADETH filmed a video for the “Super Collider” title track on May 10 in the Los Angeles area. California-based model, actress, singer and songwriter Hunter Elizabeth was cast in the lead role in the clip, which she says is “about a high-school couple still loving each other after all the years after graduation, and at the 10-year reunion, both characters find themselves successful (a model and a mathematician) and still very in love.”

On July 26, the “Metal Shop” radio show, which airs every Saturday night from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on the Seattle station KISW 99.9 FM, conducted an interview with MEGADETH bassist David Ellefson. You can now listen to the chat using the audio player below.

MEGADETH has just completed a headlining run at this year’s edition of Gigantour, the critically acclaimed package festival founded in 2005 by MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine.

In addition to MEGADETH, this year’s installment of Gigantour featured BLACK LABEL SOCIETY, DEVICE, HELLYEAH, NEWSTED and DEATH DIVISION.

“That song kind of came from that ‘Symphony Of Destruction’ corner of my mind,” Mustaine told Guitar World magazine. “You can’t always play aggressive, thrashy stuff. Sometimes those aren’t even songs; they’re like musical rams. But because I’m not a pop guy, I’m also not really comfortable playing sing-along songs. To me, ‘Super Collider’ made sense like a normal song — a verse-chorus-verse-chorus kind of thing. It’s written the way a real songwriter would write the song, instead of just taking all these musical twists and turns.”
