Linkin Park: game for it

Linkin Park have been locked in the studio working on a new studio album, and it looks like it’s packing a few surprises.

The band announced earlier this year that they were getting cracking on the follow-up to 2012′s Living Things, with Mike Shinoda recently suggesting that we might see it surface by the time they rock up to Download in June.

Now guitarist Brad Delson says that shred-happy LP warriors (erm, are there any of those?) will be very satisfied with the way the new opus is turning out.

“There’s a lot of guitar solos on the album!” he tells Music Radar. “And this is from someone who was quoted early on as saying I hated them. Not that I hated them as a listener; I just don’t want to play any; I shirked guitar solos. Early on, I felt as though the songs we were making aesthetically didn’t want them. This new batch of songs, to me, always want solos. I feel like every song has one.”

Brad also explained why the band decided to drop a new single so soon after announcing that they were in the studio, noting: “We wanted to get music out sooner than later. The timing just felt right with this song. We finished two songs relatively early in the process, and Guilty All The Same seems to inform the spirit of the record. For us, it’s the perfect lead offering to set the tone for the album as a whole.”

Expect that album to land around summer time. In the mean time, catch the rock heavyweights playing their seminal Hybrid Theory debut in full at Download in June.

The Swedish riff lords in Grand Magus have just started to record the follow-up to last year’s “The Hunt.” After finishing up demoing and a pre-production phase, the band entered the recording state at the beginning of September. Grand Magus has once again engaged with Nico Elgstrand as a producer, who already had his hands on the controllers for “The Hunt,” as well as the engineering force of Staffan Karlsson at Studio Sweetspot in Halmstad, who has worked with Arch Enemy and he mixed the most recent record from Spiritual Beggars. Commented drummer Ludwig “Ludde” Witt: “The time has come! Warriors! Things have been quiet around here recently, you know us well enough to know that we haven’t been sitting around idly though..

Dead In The Dirt

Dead In The Dirt

Once a breeding ground for all things doom-related, Southern Lord Records have been turning their attention to the imminent collapse of society and streets overrun with furious insurgent soldiers, aka crust.

The latest batch of angry orcs to come stampeding out of the stable are Atlanta’s Dead In The Dirt. Their supremely volatile debut album, Blind Hole, manages to compress crust, grind, hardcore punk and approximately 50 trillion gallons of bile into 22 tracks totalling a mere 24 minutes that will still tear down any part of your brain that protects whatever you consider sacrosanct.

Thanks to the band and Southern Lord, we have an exclusive preview of the track, No Chain – 80 seconds of pummelling, implacable fury that should be the national anthem for whatever semblance of life emerges crawling from the ruins.

Unkind

Unkind

Hardcore crust is back in a big way, with the likes of Kvelertak, Trap Them and Black Breath all taking furious d-beats, scabrous guitars and righteous insurgency to the masses.

Finland’s Unkind have brought their own, expansive take on the style, and their latest album, Pelon Juuret, is shot through with roughed-up melody and heart-wrought, emotional atmospheres that will drag you through the mean streets and set your soul on fire at the same time.

Thanks to their label, Relapse Records, we have the exclusive premier of the new video for the thunderous track, Olemisen Pelko. Time to watch the world burn!

Every Friday I turn the blog over to Dan Marsicano for his Retro Recommendation, giving you a chance to learn about underrated and overlooked gems from metal’s past. This week we have unearthed a truly obscure album. Unless you lived in the Pittsburgh area in the mid ’80s, you probably aren’t familiar with  X-Caliber. Their lone album was self-released, and didn’t get much attention nationwide. More than 25 years later that is changing, as Warriors Of The Night is this week’s Retro Recommendation.

Boston power/thrash metal veterans Meliah Rage have recently released a video for “Where Nothing Ever Grows,” which can be viewed below. The clip was produced by Brad Piche and Branden Maxham of Omnidawn Productions, who previously worked with the band on the “Hourglass” and “Halo of Flies” videos.

The song comes from Meliah Rage’s seventh full-length album “Dead to the World,” released in July 2011 through Metal on Metal Records, and lyrically deals with post-traumatic stress disorder. In the role of the soldier suffering from PTSD you can see none other than the band’s own bass player Darren Lourie.

Meliah Rage has been confirmed as the Friday night headliner for the 6th edition Warriors Of Metal Fest Open Air that will take place on June 27th-29th 2013 in Pataskala, Ohio. Band founder and guitarist Anthony Nichols states: “We in Meliah Rage are excited to announce that we will be headlining the first night of Warriors Of Metal Fest VI Open Air next year which will be the 25th anniversary of our debut release ‘Kill to Survive’ and so we shall play the majority of the songs from that record during our set. This will be our one and only appearance in the midwestern United States region in 2013 and with any luck we’ll have a new record out by then as well!”
